Vignette XVI. A SKIN LODGE OF AN ASSINIBOIN CHIEF.
Fort Union, North Dakota (near Williston). Introduction In 1832 naturalist Prince Alexander Philipp Maximilian (1782-1867), ruler of the small state of Neuwied, Prussia [now in Germany], conducted one of the earliest expeditions to the American West to record the natural history of the region. Accompanying him were Swiss-born artist Karl Bodmer, who produced numerous drawings illustrating their travels, and David Dreidoppel, Maximilian's servant and a skilled hunter-taxidermist. Although Maximilian and Bodmer were not the first to explore the American West and record their observations, they were the first team combining a trained, dedicated scientist with an especially skilled illustrator, whose collaboration resulted in a work of unique historical, scientific, and aesthetic importance. Researchers are fortunate that Special Collections owns a German edition of Maximilian's narrative of the two-year expedition

Happy Holidays, happy shopping! - Bill Chambers TV ON DVD THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON Synopsis: Minnesota native Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore) moves upstate, gets a job co-producing the evening news for WJM-TV Minneapolis, and discovers that she might just make it after all. Why It Rocks: One of television's finest ensembles (of the seventies or any other decade) gelled immediately whilst ushering sardonic, rat-tat-tat workplace humour to the small screen; is it any wonder that James L. Brooks was on the creative staff? Ed Asnerimposing when you're a kid, a magnificent teddy bear by the time you've reached adulthoodand Moore are one of the great platonic comedy duos; when they're together and on fire (as in ep. 1.6, "Support Your Local Mother"), they lift a well-oiled sitcom into Howard Hawks territory. Snow-capped Ted Knight as Ted Baxter, a bronzed lampoon of anchorman ventriloquism, elicits pre-emptive giggles the second he materializes in a scene, as do numerous one-shot guest stars. The production designers admirably resist the impulse to give Mary a bigger apartment or more furnishings than she could affordMoore's observation that, "We never went for the guaranteed laugh at the expense of the truth" seems to apply here.

    Friday, Feb. 04, 1966 Article Tools Print Email Reprints Sphere addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'timecom'; RSS Our Man Flint, the latest and most prodigal of hoke-and-dagger thrillers, is a takeoff on the spoofs that imitate James Bond movies, which already show the strain of excess spoofery. This leaves Flint Director Daniel Mann with little more to do than try the hypothesis that more and more will be funnier and funnier. Instead, the gimmickry congeals. As Secret Agent Derek Flint, James Coburn works for an outfit called ZOW1E. He opposes Galaxy, a criminal conspiracy "bigger than Spectre." He carries a pocket lighter with 82 different functions, "83 if you wish to light a cigar," and keeps four mistresses, not counting Galaxy's Gila Golan. Galaxy owns a machine that prepares all five girls to serve as "pleasure units." Viewers who believe that exaggeration equals excellence ought to enjoy Flint's machine-made pleasures immensely. tiiQuigoWriteAd(755769, 1290655, 600, 240, -1);

A Man Called Flint
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I had the opportunity to watch the two Derek Flint movies starring James Coburn. These 1960s spy spoofs are great fun to watch, with gadgets, fights, beautiful women and the incomparable Mr. Flint saving the world without batting an eye or ever losing his cool.
The four ladies from the first one are gone (Flint says they all married, and I bet he was invited to all the weddings) and are replaced by three new women. (Flint tells his boss he is trying to cut back). Flint has learned new tricks, including learning to communicate with dolphins. And you can bet that is going to come in handy in the course of the movie.
Fox recently issued the two Flint films in a deluxe set, with about nine featurettes, examining different aspects of the series, from Coburn to 1960s spy movies, set design and musical scores (the two Goldsmith scores are great, by the way).
The Flint films are great fun, and remain supremely enjoyable time capsules of 1960s entertainment.

Smart Dust

The particles of dust that could be watching you
The world's going all sci-fi on us again. Last month it was cloning and biotech, now it's super-surveillance technology. If you thought RSA and PGP had made all of us safe from prying eyes and ears, think again: those motes that just drifted in the window and floated down through the shards of sunlight cutting through your office - in a year or two those might be particles of Smart Dust , and they could be watching you. L ike something out of a Neil Stephenson novel, Smart Dust is the brainchild of Associate Professor Kris Pister and Professor Randy H. Katz, who are currently working out of the University of California, Berkeley. It relies on the convergence of three technologies: digital circuitry, laser-driven wireless communications, and something called MEMS (Micro ElectroMechanical Systems) to pack enough equipment into a space no more than one or two cubic millimeters in size. Intelligent motes Already, Pister's team has managed to cram a semiconductor laser diode and MEMS beam-steering mirror for active optical transmission, a MEMS corner-cube retroreflector for passive optical transmission, an optical receiver, signal-processing and control circuitry and a power source based on thick-film batteries and solar cells into a mote that's only five millimeters long, a length they are confident that they can more than halve. With clever power management techniques, each mote should be able to stay active for several days.
