Was Ian Fleming James Bond?
Posted by Jim Down in Books section One of the many assumptions regarding the James Bond phenomenon is that he was based on the actions of a real life character. And so he was - sort of. But was that real life character Ian Fleming himself?
Ian Fleming lived a remarkably uncompromising life in a world full of compromises. Born in 1908 as the son of Valentine Fleming, and the grandson of the wealthy Scottish banker Robert Fleming, Ian Lancaster Fleming grew up the member of a rare class of Englishmen for whom all options are open. In due course, Fleming went to Europe to continue schooling. Fleming found a home in the small Austrian town of Kitzbuhel where his education changed drastically. In an environment totally unlike the strict and conventional campuses of Eton and Sandhurst, Fleming, under the tutelage of Forbes and Phyllis Dennis, finally found a place to create his own identity. At Kitzbuhel no other students knew Valentine Fleming, war hero, and many students did not know Peter Fleming, academic star. The students only knew Ian, rakish, handsome, cultured Etonian with a rapier wit and a certain cool lack of shyness with women. When Robert Fleming died in 1933 leaving no money to any of his grandchildren, Ian once again saw the financial Rubicon, which he felt, limited his life and future options. The vast family fortune was unavailable to Ian until his mother died or re-married, and both options seemed unlikely. Fleming made his decision, leaving journalism. In one of his few compromises, Fleming, capitalizing on the family name, joined a London banking firm which he hoped would make him rich.

Review by Tony Buchsbaum
His name was Fleming, Ian Fleming. And the character he created in a small house in Jamaica was a hero for all the world. Now, for the first time in 30 years, Ian Fleming is the subject of a new biography by Andrew Lycett. Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond is a detailed, intimate look behind the scenes, and behind the mask of a man who lived a life of privilege and high expectations, a life in which cars went fast-and women went faster. Fleming was the son of a stockbroker who helped raise the capital for the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad. After Valentine Fleming was killed in World War I, his sons and their mother flitted through London society. Ian learned both the spoken language and body language of the high life, and these would forever color his perspective, attitude, and actions. After brief periods as a stockbroker and reporter, Fleming was drafted into the secret service. MI5 offered him the chance to use his social graces, his intimate knowledge of liquor and women, and his fascination with cars and all things mechanical. As a spy, he made a name for himself as a man who could get things done-dangerous things. In time, he became a member of the group who created the prototype organization for the CIA. He even met with John F. Kennedy to discuss plans to embarrass Castro and generate his fall from power.

One of the many assumptions regarding the James Bond phenomenon is that he was based on the actions of a real life character. And so he was - sort of. But was that real life character Ian Fleming himself? It is fairly well documented that Fleming chose the name James Bond because of its nondescript sound, like John Doe or Jim Smith. The real James Bond was an ornithologist whose book Birds Of the West Indies graced Fleming's coffee table. So that's how the name came to be, but what about the character? Were Bond's adventures based on Fleming's own wartime experiences? The simple answer is no. The more complicated answer is that James Bond was who Ian Fleming wanted to be! Fleming used much of his own background for Bond's history, although a great deal of this is not seen until later in the series of novels, particularly the obituary chapter from You Only Live Twice . He provided Bond with his own experiences, exaggerating where necessary and filling in any blanks. For example, whereas both of Bond's parents died in a climbing accident when he was still quite young, it was just his own father, Valentine Fleming, that died while Ian was aged nine, killed in action in 1917. Evelyn, his mother, lived a long and happy life and he survived her by only three weeks. Ian Fleming was educated at Eton. However, unlike the young 007, he was not expelled for a brief clandestine relationship with one of the school's maids. Bond continued his schooling at Fettes, "his father's own school" where "both academic and athletic standards were rigorous.[1]" While Bond's athletic prowess is on record - "he had twice fought for the school as a light-weight and had, in addition, founded the first serious judo class at a British public school.[2]" - Fleming was not idle. He won practically every event at the school's sports day in 1924, and as a senior (i.e. over 16) he was "Victor Ludorum", champion of the games, two years in succession, a feat not achieved by any other Eton pupil.

Ian Fleming, Creator of James Bond
A brief guide to Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, in London. Ian Fleming (1908-1964) was born into a wealthy family at 27 Green Street in Mayfair. His father, Valentine, was killed in the First World War, while mother and sons went on to became fixtures within London Society in the inter-war period. After a period as a journalist with Reuters, Fleming joined a London banking firm and moved to 22B Ebury Street, where he lived from 1936 to 1939. During this period he amassed an important collection of first editions and surrealist art, whilst leading an elegant life of dinner parties, games of chance and love affairs. His circle of friends included Noel Coward, Peter Quennell, Patrick Leigh Fermor and Cyril Connolly. When the Second World War broke out Fleming was recruited to Naval Intelligence, and became assistant to the Director. Shortly after the war he built his house, Goldeneye, on the north coast of Jamaica, and in 1952 he married his long-time lover Ann Charteris, Lady Rothermere (previously, wife of Lord Rothermere of the Daily Mail), so becoming her third husband. In the Spring of 1953 Fleming purchased No. 16 Victoria Square in Belgravia as a London base (see adjacent photo).

The Lektor machine in From Russia With Love was based on the Enigma. Courtesy Bletchley Park The need to capture one of the coding machines or Enigma material being used by the German Navy was crucial to winning the Battle of the Atlantic, in which U-boats were attacking convoys bringing essential supplies to Britain. The Allies needed to find out where the U-boats were assembling and when they might attack the convoys, but their codes were extremely difficult to break. Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, became the national centre for codebreaking. However, the reaction of key codebreakers at Bletchley, Alan Turing and Peter Twinn, to the abandoning of the plan, are recounted by Frank Birch, Head of German Naval Section at Bletchley Park. The above photo is of our own copy of 'Octopussy' which sold on Ebay just before Christmas (the happy holidays) at a stonking $740. Over the last few years we have sold about 200 fine/fine copies on ebay with a starting price of $9.99. None made less than $50, a few got over $200 and one over $300. I have a few left and haven't put a copy up for 6 months so this recent result came as a shock.
The reason one is always surprised that 'Octopussy' makes any money at all is that I can vividly remember it being sold in great bulk at 50p or less. A Cecil Court bookseller, one John Adrian of 'The Clearing House' (a Buchanite name) bought 32,000 copies of the first edition in the mid 1980s. The first edition print run was 50,000 a Bondite website states '...contrary to popular opinion it was not actually remaindered' - but a bulk of new duplicate books bought from the publisher being sold off cheap adds up to remaindering by any other name (in my book.) The site also adds 'copies with unclipped jackets and no signs of a price sticker are preferred' and the Cecil Court bulk had the price in about 3 states. I can actual recall it selling as low as 5p (10 cents) and many customer bought twenty or more at a time. Around 2000 we bought a cupboardful in Chiswick. Our Ebay description, a model of suave brevity, read: -

    Ian Fleming in Macao
In 1959 Fleming took a trip around the world visiting key cities and reporting about them to the Sunday Times. A compilation of these articles was published in book form in 1964 under the title of Thrilling Cities , the same year as his death. Cities traveled included: Hong Kong, Macau, Tokyo, Honolulu, L.A., Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, Geneva, Naples, and Monte Carlo. In lieu of my own budget, I plan on posting on Fleming's trip vicariously, starting with Macao. The following is Fleming's trip to the Central Hotel, which he describes as a nine-story skyscraper which isn't exactly a hotel. It is devoted to human vices. And the "higher up the building, the largest in Macau, the more beautiful and expensive are the girls, the higher the stakes at the gambling tables, and the better the music." In the excerpt, Fleming has just described the rules and ambiance of playing fan-tan at this din of sin.

After publishing his first Bond adventure, Casino Royale , in 1953, Fleming wrote one Bond book each year until his death. In the world of 1950's fiction, Ian Fleming's use of firearms in his novels was unusual. Fleming's contemporaries identified guns by generic terms like ".38" or ".45" and on occasion offered more detailed descriptions such as "small automatic" or "large revolver". Hoping to add realism to his writing, Fleming took the innovative step of actually naming the models of guns used by his characters. Fleming initially drew upon his own considerable experience and observations, acquired during World War Two as a high level member of British Naval Intelligence. However, like many people with little more than a passing interest in firearms, Fleming's knowledge of model numbers, caliber and cartridges was not detailed. Always the good journalist, Fleming did check the details in his work with outside sources. For his first novel Casino Royale Fleming consulted London Gunsmith Robert Churchill who corrected the spelling of "Beretta". Eventually, Fleming's attention to detail drew the interest of firearms enthusiast Geoffrey Boothroyd. In a 1956 letter to Fleming, Boothroyd was critical of Bond's favorite pistol, the .25 Beretta. Impressed by the expertise imparted in Boothroyd's fan letter, Fleming decided to re-arm his secret agent using Boothroyd's recommendations as guidelines. Soon after, as the Bond books gained in readership all the detail Fleming provided caused him additional criticism from armchair firearms "experts" who would often jealously characterize him as a bungler.

Many famous authors have passed through Dover, many inevitably were waiting for a ferry, like Byron who spent 2 or 3 days here in the Ship Hotel. Others life George Eliot spent a few weeks in the town. Matthew Arnold honeymooned at the Lord Warden Hotel and wrote his famous poem 'Dover Beach' here. In modern times, however, two of the country's best known authors associated with the stage, internationally famous films and entertainment did a little more than pass through on a ferry trip and spent considerable time over several years living locally in the village of St. Margaret's. The two are Noel Coward and the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming. It's over forty years since Fleming and Coward lived here, but the importance of their work and the interest in them prompted Dover Museum to stage an exhibition on their local associations.
