I am retired from active research, and no longer have graduate students or post-docs. In a research career from 1959-2002, I was interested in understanding organic reactions, with special emphasis since 1972 on the uses of organosilicon chemistry to solve problems of chemo-, regio- and stereocontrol in organic synthesis. Our early work on organosilicon chemistry established that the trimethylsilyl group could be used to control the outcome of carbocation reactions to Later we established how the stereochemistry of open-chain electrophilic attack on a double bond adjacent to a stereogenic centre could be controlled when one of the substituents on the stereogenic centre was a phenyldimethylsilyl group , having established that it was easy to introduce, using a silyl-cuprate reagent, and easily converted into a hydroxyl with retention of configuration to These investigations led to new synthetic methods

  • About Ian Fleming: Ian Fleming, creator of the world's best-known secret agent, is the author of fourteen James Bond books. Born in London in 1908 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he became the Reuters Moscow correspondent in 1929. In the spring of 1939, Fleming went back to Moscow as a special correspondent for the London Times. In June of that same year, he joined Naval Intelligence and served throughout World War II, finally earning the rank of Commander, RNVSR (Sp.). Much of the James Bond material was drawn directly from Fleming's experiences as an intelligence officer. Later, Fleming became a consultant on foreign affairs for the London Sunday Times, by which time he had become far better known as the creator of James Bond.

Also Known As: Ian Lancaster Fleming [full name] BIOGRAPHY Best known as the creator of James Bond , Ian Fleming's own life provided some of the background for his most famous creation. Hailing from a wealthy and privileged background [he counted among his relatives cellist Amaryllis Fleming, to whom he was half-brother, and his cousin Christopher Lee], Fleming was naturally afforded the best education money could buy, attending Eton and the Sandhurst military academy. It was while at school in Kitzbuhel, Austria, that his love and talent for writing began to emerge, though it wasn't his original intention to become a writer. He had planned to join the Foreign Service, but failed to meet the entrance requirements and instead took up a post as a journalist at the Reuters news agency. He proved his worth covering a high profile case in the Soviet Union where a number of Royal Engineers were put on trial facing espionage charges. A short stint working for his family's bank was curtailed by the outbreak of World War II, whereupon he was recruited by British Naval Intelligence. It seemed that, even more so than writing, Fleming had found his true calling - he proved an exceptional officer and soon found himself promoted to the rank of Commander. It wasn't until a decade after his death that the extent of Fleming's wartime intelligence work emerged - it transpired that he was close colleague of Sir William Stevenson, the head of the extremely secretive Ultra Network which, in 1939, had cracked the Nazi's Enigma code. Fleming had been a part of that team whose work decisively changed the course of the war.

Send it to a friend! 50 years ago, an author wrote the first of a series of books that would go on to spawn one of the most successful franchises in film history. This entry celebrates the life and works of this man - Ian Fleming. Brief History Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in 1908 to a wealthy family (of Fleming's Bank fame). His father, Valentine Fleming, was killed in the First World War, but due to peculiarities of family legacies, young Ian did not benefit hugely from the considerable family wealth, not having been left money directly by his father or grandfather. This situation, despite him having a more privileged existence than most, and all things being relative even to the rich, dogged him for most of his life. After a brief spell at Eton (he left after some disgrace with a girl), he continued his education at Sandhurst Military Academy. However this proved equally unfruitful, and he left without an officer's commission. His family, possibly in desperation, sent him to a progressive Austrian school-cum-university run by an Englishman in Kitzbuhel, the ski resort. After failing the Foreign Office exam he turned to journalism, and followed his brother Peter (a travel writer of note) to join the news agency, Reuters. There he enjoyed a minor scoop when covering the Metro-Vickers trial of some suspected British spies in the Soviet Union, and then went on to carry out other similar work, possibly providing the Intelligence Service with details of his foreign assignments.

    http://www.commanders.com/flemings_jamaica/main.html
In 1997 the Commanders Club celebrated its tenth year as the singular entity involved in preservation and celebration of Ian Fleming's 007. Looking back over 10 years of such an organisation invariably leads one's thoughts to Jamaica, the cradle of 007. There Fleming wrote all 13 of the Bond novels while escaping the drab English winters and the "serious" literary set entertained by his wife Anne. The first of these thrillers, Casino Royale was a way for Fleming to get his mind off the pending end of his bachelorhood at the age of 43, tapping away on a manual Remington in his detached office on the grounds of Goldeneye, the home he built on Jamaica's North Coast at the end of World War II. Jamaica gave Fleming the balance of privacy and stimulation needed to sustain the killing pace of any invention that becomes a global sensation. Along with writing all the Bond novels there, Fleming set major parts of three of them Dr. No Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun in country. Fleming's love of authentic detail closes the loop in making Bond come alive, and at the same time that detail gives the dozens of real locations in 007's career a sense of marvelous fiction.

I'd like to argue that the Bond universe is premised on a certain obsessive-compulsive logic, but a logic that can more profitably be understood as Althusserian and ideological rather than as simply Freudian and psychological, a logic that is less about regression to infantile sexuality than about the hopes and anxieties spawned by postwar culture.

Ian Fleming Ian Fleming was born in 1908. His father, a Conservative MP, died in combat shortly before Ian's ninth birthday. Ian went to Eton, where he showed little aptitude for anything except sport. His mother Eve arranged for him to enter officer training at Sandhurst but this was cut short in 1927 when Ian caught gonorrhoea from a prostitute. Scandalised, Eve removed him from Sandhurst and sent him to complete his education at a private school in Switzerland followed by three years as a student in Munich and Geneva. In 1931 Fleming returned to Britain, where Eve secured him a job at the news agency Reuters. Two years later, again under Eve's influence, he became, in his own words, 'the world's worst stockbroker', with a penchant for exotic and risky investments. Disenchanted with banking, he sent freelance reports on Russia and Germany to the Foreign Office and The Times , but had no response.
