    The Old Ships
I have seen old ships sail like swans asleep
Beyond the village which men still call Tyre,
With leaden age o'ercargoed, dipping deep
For Famagusta and the hidden sun
      That rings black Cyprus with a lake of fire;
And all those ships were certainly so old
Who knows how oft with squat and noisy gun,
Questing brown slaves or Syrian oranges,
      The pirate Genoese
      Hell-raked them till they rolled
Blood, water, fruit and corpses up the hold.
But now through friendly seas they softly run,
Painted the mid-sea blue or shore-sea green,
Still patterned with the vine and grapes in gold.
      But I have seen,
Pointing her shapely shadows from the dawn
And image tumbled on a rose-swept bay,
      A drowsy ship of some yet older day;
      And, wonder's breath indrawn,
Thought I who knows who knows but in that same
(Fished up beyond Aeaea, patched up new
      Stern painted brighter blue )
      That talkative, bald-headed seaman came
(Twelve patient comrades sweating at the oar)
      From Troy's doom-crimson shore

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Flecker, James Elroy Flecker, James Elroy (1884-1915), was a British poet of the early 1900's. Much of his verse displays a romantic interest in the ancient East. Critics are divided on the quality of Flecker's poetry, but they have generally praised the technical mastery of his verse. Flecker's best-known poems are "The Golden Journey to Samarkand" (1913) and "The Old Ships" (1915). His Collected Poems was published in 1916, after his death. Flecker wrote two verse plays in 1914, Hassan and Don Juan. Neither was published until after his death. Hassan, an exotic and violent drama set in old Baghdad, became a major hit in London when it was staged in 1922. Flecker also wrote a novel, The King of Alsander (1914).

Giving voice to the poetry of the past. Oxford Canal
by James Elroy Flecker (1884 – 1915) When you have wearied of the valiant spires of this County Town,
Of its wide white streets and glistening museums, and black monastic walls,
Of its red motors and lumbering trains, and self-sufficient people,
I will take you walking with me to a place you have not seen —
Half town and half country—the land of the Canal.
It is dearer to me than the antique town: I love it more than the rounded hills:
Straightest, sublimest of rivers is the long Canal.
I have observed great storms and trembled: I have wept for fear of the dark.
But nothing makes me so afraid as the clear water of this idle canal on a summer's noon. Do you see the great telegraph poles down in the water, how every wire is distinct?

have their dreams, and do not think of us. Voices of the Caravan We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. (in the distance, singing) james elroy flecker.
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~martinh/poems/SAMARKND
The Golden Journey to Samarkand At the Gate of the Sun, Bagdad, in olden time. The Merchants (together) Away, for we are ready to a man! Our camels sniff the evening and are glad. Lead on, O Master of the Caravan: Lead on the Merchant-Princes of Bagdad. The Chief Draper Have we not Indian carpets dark as wine, Turbans and sashes, gowns and bows and veils, And broideries of intricate design, And printed hangings in enormous bales? The Chief Grocer We have rose-candy, we have spikenard, Mastic and terebinth and oil and spice, And such sweet jams meticulously jarred As God's own Prophet eats in Paradise. The Principal Jews And we have manuscripts in peacock styles By Ali of Damascus: we have swords Engraved with storks and apes and crocodiles, And heavy beaten necklaces, for Lords. The Master of the Caravan But you are nothing but a lot of Jews. The Principal Jews Sir, even dogs have daylight, and we pay. The Master of the Caravan But who are ye in rags and rotten shoes, You dirty-bearded, blocking up the way? The Pilgrims We are the Pilgrims, master: we shall go Always a little further: it may be Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow, Across that angry or that glimmering sea, White on a throne or guarded in a cave There lives a prophet who can understand Why men are born: but surely we are brave, Who make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. The Chief Merchant We gnaw the nail of hurry. Master, away! One of the Women O turn your eyes to where your children stand. Is not Bagdad the beautiful? O stay! The Merchants (in chorus) We take the Golden Road to Samarkand. An Old Man Have you not girls and garlands in your homes, Eunuchs and Syrian boys at your command? Seek not excess: God hateth him who roams! The Merchants (in chorus) We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. A Pilgrim with a Beautiful Sweet to ride forth at evening from the wells Voice When shadows pass gigantic on the sand, And softly though the silence beat the bells Along the Golden Road to Samarkand. A Merchant We travel not for trafficking alone: By hotter winds our fiery hearts are fanned: For lust of knowing what should not be known We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. The Master of the Caravan Open the gate, O watchman of the night! The Watchman Ho, travellers, I open. For what land Leave you the dim-moon city of delight? The Merchants (with a shout) We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. (The Caravan passes through the gate) The Watchman What would ye, ladies? It was ever thus. (consoling the women) Men are unwise and curiously planned. A Woman They have their dreams, and do not think of us. Voices of the Caravan We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. More Information James Elroy Flecker was born in Lewisham, England, on 5th November 1884 he was brought up and educated in an Evangelical background, something he silently rebelled against and did not break free from until going to Oxford where he soon made a name for himself as something of a wit. He was first published during this time. Upon leaving leaving university he joined the Consular Service but was plagued by ill health. It was after being posted to Beirut that he struck up his friendship with TE Lawrence before moving to Switzerland to convalesce. It was at this time that his reputation as a great poet was sealed with the publication of his finest work The Golden Journey to Samarkand, sadly Flecker was unable to enjoy its success as he passed away at the sanitorium in 1915.

(1884-1915) born on Nov 05 English "poet, dramatist". "Herman Elroy Flecker (ps. James) wrote "The Bridge Of Fire," 1907 and "The Golden Journey To Samarkand," 1913." For lust of knowing what should not be known,
We take the Golden Road to Samarkand."

And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die,
We poets of the proud old lineage
Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why, -
What shall we tell you? Tales, marvellous tales
Of ships and stars . . ." "What would ye, ladies? It was ever thus.
