Vinyl Leaves: Walt Disney World and America
Stephen M. Fjellman The Disney family of parks has been studied from many angles. Some are very basic and simply describe the properties park by park, others offer a guide for affordably traversing the properties and several well-done architectural books have examined the company and its impact upon American building and urban design. However, until I picked up Stephen M. Fjellman's Vinyl Leaves: Walt Disney World and America I had not run across a book that examined any Disney property in the larger sense, i.e. the societal constructs in which Disney presents itself and the way the parks shape instead of reflect American culture.
It is evident that Fjellman enjoys his visits to Walt Disney World. His strength is to look at things on a deeper level and connect the thoughts and experiences that escape the casual visitor. However, I think the fact that he has a good time while on property is important for readers to note and remember after turning the last page. The book's first few chapters might be hard to digest as Fjellman throws several well-known international sociologists and anthropologists together. Personally, I enjoyed this part of the work as it gave me a better understanding of where he was coming from and refreshed me on some social and culture theory, most of which I had not come across since college.
One of my favorite sections of the book was Chapter 4, entitled "Distory: Disney History at the Magic Kingdom". Fjellman took more of a historiographical approach (the analysis of "who said what happened") as opposed to traditional history ("what happened") when examining how Walt Disney World sees history, particularly in America. He works at comparing what we find at places throughout the Magic Kingdom, such as Main Street U.S.A., to how these places existed in real life. He also does an in-depth look at the Carousel of Progress presentation that existed at the time of writing. Fjellman makes some interesting points about how the concept of progress is measured in terms of household convenience and purchases.

DISNEY INC text by Rickey Kim
Mist envelopes the riverbed as chirps of exotic birds are echoed among groves of foliage and vine. Grunts and roars of a variety of wild animals can be heard as our boat makes its path down the delta. The members of the crew seem to be quite comfortable and at ease although this is a first for all of them. Soon the boat docks and all passengers proceed to exit as overhead speakers speak in soothing multilingual phrases, “We hope you enjoyed your Amazon adventure…please come again and experience the magic of Walt Disney.” The people perceive to pay no heed to the monologue as smiles are exchanged with a few snaps of a camera; the jolly crowd walks down the plank as new shipments of human luggage pour into the vessel.
Sometimes what worries me is not so much that Disney has created this ultimate experience in meeting fantasy with reality for the supreme middle-class American dream, but rather the fact that many people simply wish not to admit that they have become pawns to such propaganda and feel there is no need to question it.
Once we leave the ride we are faced with a multitude of concession stands where we are offered food, drink, and souvenirs leading many of us toward impulse buying.

Claim: Walt Disney prepared a film to be viewed by Disney executives after his death, in which he gave them all instructions about how to run their areas of the company.
Status: False.
Example:
[Segaloff, 2001]
After Walt died in 1966, his chief executives were escorted to assigned seats in the company screening room. There they were shown a film that Walt had made before he died in which he spoke to each of them by name and told them all what he expected them to do for the next five years.
Origins: Such is Walt Disney's reputation as a keen visionary who mastered futuristic projects down the smallest details (and a somewhat secretive figure to boot) that several prominent legends continue to circulate which credit him with formulating long-range plans extending even beyond the grave: He arranged to have himself frozen after death so that he might be revived when science found a cure for the illness that killed him, he included all sorts of minutiae in his will (such as a list of Disney films that should never be released on video, even though the home video market was years away), and he prepared a film to be viewed post-mortem in which he gave instructions to Disney executives about how to run the company in his absence. The reality, however, is that all of these legends are most

Research Project Top The Proposal Annotated Bibliography Topics ... Final Draft All students will do a research project, which will count for about fifty percent of their grade. The project should reflect a cultural approach , not just a cultural topic. Everyone will turn in a proposal, an annotated bibliography, and do a class presentation on their subject. Beyond that, students have three options:
  • A traditional research paper of 12 to 20 pages. (Guidelines below.) A short video documentary/essay on an aspect of contemporary culture.
  • Number 2 should probably be done in groups; talk to me early in the semester if you are interested in this possibility. The Proposal (due no later than ): The proposal outlines the main idea, the point, and explains the kind of evidence and theory you plan to use to support it. It should be 1-2 pages long, typed, double-spaced. It should be organized, clear, and concise, and reflect the logic of your idea. It must have a clear thesis sentence, usually as the last sentence of the first paragraph. Your paper should not just be a book report or a summary of others' work. It should have one main POINT, or argument. To qualify as a point, the main idea of your paper must be:
