Introduction
The F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers (C0187) is a comprehensive literary archive containing the original manuscripts, working drafts, corrected galleys, personal and professional correspondence, autobiographical scrapbooks, photographs, and other original materials of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), Princeton Class of 1917. The papers are Fitzgerald's own, remaining in his possession at the time of his death in 1940; they are not an artificial collection. Frances Scott ("Scottie") Fitzgerald Lanahan (later Smith), the daughter of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, donated the papers to the Princeton University Library in 1950. Concerning this donation, see Matthew J. Bruccoli, "Where They Belong: The Acquisition of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers," Princeton University Library Chronicle

was born in St Paul, Minnesota of mixed Southern and Irish descent. He was given three names after the writer of The Star Spangled Banner , to whom he was distantly related. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a salesman, a Southern gentleman, whose furniture business had failed. Mary McQuillan, his mother, was the daughter of a successful wholesale grocer, and devoted to her only son. The family moved regularly, but settled finally in 1918 in St. Paul. Fitzgerald started to write at St. Paul Academy. His first published story, 'The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage' appeared in 1909 in Now and Then . Fitzgerald entered in 1913 Princeton University, where he failed to become a football hero. He left his studies in 1917 because of his poor academic records, and took up a commission in the US Army. His experiences during World War I were more peaceful than Hemingway's - he never saw action and even did not go to France. The Romantic Egoist , a novel started in Princeton, was returned from Scribner's with an encouraging letter.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Written in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is often referred to as "The Great American Novel," and as the quintessential work which captures the mood of the "Jazz Age."
Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and educated at Princeton, although he dropped out to join the army before he completed his degree. Stationed near Montgomery, Alabama, he met and later married Zelda Sayre, a high-strung woman from a family more prominent than his own. His first novel, This Side of Paradise , published in 1920. was a tremendous critical and commercial success. Fitzgerald followed with The Beautiful and the Damned in 1922, The Great Gatsby in 1925, Tender is the Night (1934), and was working on The Last Tycoon (1941) when he died, in Hollywood, in 1940.
Questions to Think About:
1) Who do you think the characters in The Great Gatsby represent? Do they seem like real people? Which characters seem the most real to you?
2) What is the symbolism of the green light that appears throughout the novel (at the end of Daisy's pier, at intersections throughout the book)?
3) Fitzgerald returns several times to describe a decrepit optical products sign the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleberg that hovers over "the valley of ashes." What does that sign represent?

With Gold Coast parties and bathtub gin, Long Island epitomizes the Roaring '20s
By David Behrens Staff Writer

  • E-mail Share It was the beginning of a decade of Prohibition and apparent prosperity: a time of jazz bands and petting parties, high-stepping flappers and college boys with hip flasks.
On Long Island, there were rumrunners and dealers in bathtub gin, gaudy parties on the grounds of fabulous Gold Coast estates, rowdy gatherings in neighborhood speakeasies and big-name entertainers in flashy nightclubs, where ordinary men and women brushed shoulders and clinked glasses with the famous and the notorious. There were also thousands of work-a-day people who went to work-a-day jobs, worried about their children's future and hoped to save up for the latest Ford.
It was the Roaring '20s on Long Island, which became a microcosm of the nation's revolution in manners and morals. F. Scott Fitzgerald had memorialized the era with his 1922 best-seller, ``Tales of the Jazz Age,'' the year before he rented a house in Great Neck and began work on his best-known novel, ``The Great Gatsby.''

The novels and short stories of American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald chronicled the glitter and excess of American society in the 1920s—an era he christened the Jazz Age. As both observers of and participants in this lifestyle, Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, led social lives that mirrored the hedonism of his stories. In depicting this hedonistic society, however, Fitzgerald also portrayed the hidden desperation and spiritual emptiness of its members. FITZGERALD, F. Scott (September, 1896-December, 1940); American novelist and short-story writer
During his lifetime only a handful of serious critics conscientiously debated Fitzgerald's artistic development, and though they were quick to point out weaknesses as well as strengths, their assessments now have the eerie feeling of prophesy in predicting the status of Fitzgerald's posthumous literary reputation and the direction of the critical response that has established it during the five decades since his death.
Among these were Edmund Wilson, H.L. Mencken, John Peale Bishop, Paul Rosenfeld, and T. S. Eliot, the latter of whom called The Great Gatsby "the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James." As the poet laureate of the Jazz Age, the creator of the flapper in fiction, as author of more than one hundred fifty stories in slick magazines like the Saturday Evening Post and, with his wife Zelda, a visible public figure pictured on the cover of popular magazines and the top of taxicabs on Fifth Avenue in New York during the 1920's, Fitzgerald became an easy target for superficial evaluations of his work during his lifetime. But he was also from the beginning of his career a serious literary artist who worked diligently to reconcile in his own life the central dilemma of professional authorship in America: how to create works of high literary merit while earning a living from his own writing. The fifty odd years of careful scrutiny of the body of Fitzgerald's work have more than borne out the confidence of those few contemporary critics who, in his lifetime, saw for him a permanent place among the immortals of American literature. Since 1940 there have been hundreds of journal articles, a dozen biographical studies, and more than thirty critical volumes devoted to Fitzgerald and his work.
