The Wars by Timothy Findley
The novel The Wars The Last of Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague The Wars was adapted for film in 1981 and debuted in Calgary this September on the stage. The Timothy Findley Award will serve to recognize a body of work - judged to be no less than three works of literary merit which are predominantly fiction - rather than a single book. All Canadian male writers will be considered and no age restrictions will apply. REFERENCES COLUMNS Horror Mystery Fantasy General Fiction Horror novels typically portray the mentally ill as vicious, not visionary. Canadian writer Timothy Findley has a different take on the matter in his luscious, layered and literate novel "Headhunter". Following Francis Ford Coppola's lead, Findley takes the characters from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and sets them loose in the modern world. In "Headhunter", however, the jungle is Toronto, Kurtz's citadel is the Parkin Psychiatric Institute, and both Kurtz and Marlowe are psychiatrists. As in Conrad's narrative, Kurtz is an enigmatic, powerful man, who has gone deep into the wilderness (of insanity) to achieve stunning commercial success, while Marlowe is the outsider journeying towards an understanding of the extent of Kurtz's power and magnetism. Findley shows a flair for the absurd in his opening pages, when Lilah Kemp, "a spiritualist of intense but undisciplined powers...inadvertently set Kurtz free from page 92 of 'Heart of Darkness'." This mordant tone allows him to be unusually effective in treading the thin line between a novel of the supernatural and a novel of psychological delusions. When Lilah is told that the Kurtz she sees in the library is the head of the psychiatric institution that dispenses her anti-hallucinogen, she is alarmed, but her Marlowe will appear next door to her, in fact, employed by the very same Parkin Institute headed up by the venerable Kurtz. "Marlowe used literature as psychotherapy. He believed in its healing powers not because of its sentiments, but because of its complexities."

  • Timothy Findley 1930–
Canadian novelist, short story writer, playwright, and scriptwriter. The following entry presents criticism on Findley through 1995. For additional information on his life and works, see CLC , Volume 27.
    INTRODUCTION
A prize-winning author, Findley is recognized as one of Canada's preeminent literary figures. He frequently makes reference to historical events, figures, and other works of literature, and his writings, according to John F. Hulcoop, are evocative in nature, "[compelling] the critic to recover his senses ( see more, hear more) by making direct appeals to the viewer-listener-reader through sight, sound and style: these are what force us to pay attention—to look and listen and mark his words." Thematically, Findley's works typically focus on the past and history, isolation, identity, war, madness, and authority.
    Biographical Information
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Findley learned of sorrow at an early age: a sibling died when he was a child and Findley's father essentially abandoned the family for a time by suddenly enlisting in the Canadian armed forces. Due in part to illness, Findley never formally finished his secondary education and initially pursued—and succeeded in establishing—a career in acting. He worked with such renowned actresses as Ruth Gordon, toured in a production of

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Findley was raised in the upper class Rosedale district of the city. He pursued a career in the arts, studying dance and acting, and had significant success as an actor before turning to writing.
His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel The Wars went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981.
Timothy Findley received a Governor General's Award, the Canadian Authors Association Award, an ACTRA Award, the Order of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Award, and he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. He was a founding member and chair of the Writers' Union of Canada, and a president of the Canadian chapter of PEN International.
His writing was heavily influenced by Jungian psychology, and mental illness, gender and sexuality were frequent recurring themes in his work. His characters often carried dark personal secrets, and were often conflicted sometimes to the point of psychosis by these burdens.

On translating Timothy Findley: Of words and worlds
Journal of Canadian Studies Winter 1998/1999 by Nesida Loyer This paper illustrates how having access to a living author affects a translator's work. The examples are mainly derived from Timothy Findley's Headhunter. Contact with an author makes for a greater degree of accuracy and faithfulness - both to the spirit and the letter of the original. It facilitates the research of quotations and fosters a deeper understanding of the subtexts and of the author's idiosyncracies. Because languages have different modes of expression, being faithful to the spirit may require being unfaithful to the letter. The accuracy and faithfulness increase exponentially when the translator has a first-hand knowledge of the words and world of the author. In the case of Timothy Findley, his trust and generosity made the task of translating his work a most rewarding experience - and enabled me to convey in a more profound way his work to francophone readers.
