Timothy Irving Frederick Findley Tiff, as he was called by almost everyone who knew him was born in Toronto on October 30, 1930. At an early age, Tiff must have been touched by a muse, as he took ballet lessons aspiring to be a dancer. Very soon though, in his teens, he became a man of words other people's words as he started a career as an actor. In 1953 he was chosen to be a charter member of the Stratford Festival acting company in its inaugural season. He found acting stimulating enough to proceed to London, where he studied and graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama. His talents as an actor took him to the West End, Broadway and Moscow. During a tour of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker , Tiff's talent with words as a writer came to the attention of fellow actor and star Ruth Gordon, and of the great Mr. Wilder himself, who encouraged him to write. He returned to Canada where he continued to act, but where the writing bug must have taken over. In the early 1960's he met his lifelong partner, Bill Whitehead, himself a writer and producer who hired Tiff as an actor. That partnership gave Tiff the support he needed to give up acting and develop a career as a writer. His natural ear for dialogue gave him the ability to write screenplays (

A charter member of Ontario's Stratford Festival, established in 1953, he found success at home and abroad, appearing on many European and North American stages. It was his tour through Britain and the U.S., in a production of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, starring Ruth Gordon, that was perhaps the most important of his acting career. Both Wilder and Gordon recognized the strength of Findley's writing talent and, with their encouragement, he gave up the stage and turned to full-time writing in 1963. In 1996, Findley published his first novella - You Went Away - to widespread critical acclaim and bestseller status. His novel The Piano Man's Daughter , was a #1 national bestseller in both hardcover and mass market and was shortlisted for the prestigious Giller Prize. His other novels have garnered many awards - The Wars won a Governor General's Award for Fiction and established Findley's reputation as one of Canada's pre-eminent writers; it was recently ranked number two on the Quill and Quire top Canadian list. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley was born in Toronto, Ontario, on October 30, 1930. The second surviving son of a financially straitened family in the prestigious Rosedale district. Findley's health was poor throughout his childhood; his attendance and interest in school was erratic, and he did not finish grade ten. He subsequently studied dance and then turned to acting. He joined the original acting ensemble of the Stratford Festival in 1953, where he met and worked alongside Alec Guinness. He accepted Guinness's offer to sponsor his attendance at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. In London he befriended Ruth Gordon and playwright Thornton Wilder while acting in Wilder's The Matchmaker in 1954. He published his first short story, "About Effie," in The Tamarack Review in 1956 (reprinted in Dinner Along the Amazon [1984]), and began to consider a career in writing under the encouragement of his friends Gordon and Wilder. Through 1956 he toured North America and Europe in minor acting roles, and after living in Los Angeles, California, in 1957, he returned to Canada in 1958. For a time he made his living writing for radio, television and the stage. He wrote for the

One of Canada's best-loved authors, Findley was highly regarded internationally in both the literary world and that of the theater, for which he had a special love. A mere summation of Findley's accomplishments impressive though they might be is dry and meaningless compared with the man himself. Better, I think, to sketch him briefly for you here a quick rendering from life and follow with our final interview with him, made on his last book tour for his fabulous though starkly underrated (even by Findley himself) novel, Spadework. I first met Timothy Findley in 1995, on tour for The Piano Man's Daughter a book that would prove to be one of his most important and that was nominated for a Giller award and made into a film that Findley loathed. Author profile: Timothy Findley
    Timothy Findley (1930-2002)
Born in Toronto in 1930, Timothy Findley began his artistic career studying dance and then later theatre. Findley became quite successful as an actor, even acting alongside Sir Alec Guinness at the Stratford Festival in the 1950s. In fact, it was not until he became friends with the actress Ruth Gordon that Findley even considered writing as a vocation. It was after his first short story was published in The Tamarack Review , that Gordon was able to convince him that he should give up acting and concentrate on writing fiction. Findley's first success as a novelist, however, did not come in Canada. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. This all changed, however, with The Wars (1977). Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Since then he has published five more novels, each helping to establish his reputation as one of Canada's most popular and beloved novelists.

    Findley, Timothy (1930-2002)
page: Award-winning Canadian writer Timothy Findley produced works in a number of genres, including plays, novels, and short stories. While his works are impossible to pigeon-hole, they often examine the nature of power in society and the struggle of people to understand and achieve what is right. Timothy Irving Frederick Findley"Tiff" to his friendswas born into a prosperous Toronto family on October 30, 1930 and grew up in the fashionable Rosedale section of the city. His father was the first person outside of the founding families to head the Massey-Ferguson company. His mother's family had a piano factory. Sponsor Message.
Although Findley grew up in a privileged environment, his childhood was far from happy. Under the influence of alcohol his father frequently terrorized Findley's mother and older brother. Findley himself generally escaped his wrath, but, in the words of journalist Alec Scott, "vicarious scar tissue developed nonetheless" in the sensitive young boy. Findley suffered from poor health as a child. He nearly died of pneumonia in his second year, and shortly thereafter he was confined to an oxygen tent due to complications of an ear infection.

    Timothy Findley Award
In the spring of 2003 The Writers' Trust of Canada established an annual award for a male writer in mid-career in the name of the late Timothy Findley. Before his death in June 2002, Mr. Findley wrote, "It is truly wonderful to know that the Marian Engel Award will now have a partner." The Timothy Findley Award serves to recognise a body of work (comprised of no less than three works of literary merit which are predominantly fiction) rather than a single book. All male Canadian writers are considered and no age restrictions apply. Born in 1930, Timothy Findley pursued acting as a profession for 15 years before taking up writing full-time in 1962. Along with writing for radio, television, and film, his early novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and largely ignored by the Canadian press. It was not until his third novel, The Wars (1977), that Mr. Findley garnered critical and commercial praise and won that year's Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction. He later went on to further success producing eight more novels, three collections of short fiction, two works of non-fiction and several plays, including
