This gentleman had in his youth married a very worthy and beautiful woman, of whom he had been extremely fond: by her he had three children, all of whom died in their infancy. He had likewise had the misfortune of burying this beloved wife herself, about five years before the time in which this history chuses to set out.
Amelia

A genteel young man and woman were then set forward, and a very grave-looking person swore he caught them in a situation which we cannot as particularly describe here as he did before the magistrate; who, having received a wink from his clerk, declared with much warmth that the fact was incredible and impossible. The Governess It was on a fine summer's evening when the school-hours were at an end, and the young ladies were admitted to divert themselves for some time, as they thought proper, in a pleasant garden adjoining to the house, that their governess, who delighted in pleasing them, brought out a little basket of apples, which were intended to be divided equally amongst them; but Mrs. Teachum being hastily called away (one of her poor neighhours having had an accident which wanted her assistance), she left the fruit in the hands of Miss Jenny Peace, the eldest of her scholars, with a strict charge to see that every one had an equal share of her gift.

Henry Fielding was born on April 22, 1707, at the family estate, Sharpham Park, in Somerset, England. His mother died when he was eleven years old, and, on his father's remarriage, he was sent to school at Eton. He left Eton at seventeen and spent the next four years as a gentleman of leisure. After studying for 18 months at the University of Leiden in Holland, he began to support himself as a playwright in London. He wrote 25 plays before his satire, Historical Register, For the Year 1736, ridiculing Prime Minister Robert Walpole, led to the passage of the Licensing Act. This act, requiring governmental approval of all new plays, led to the end of his career as a playwright. Fielding sought to support his wife and two children by studying law and became a lawyer in 1740. He supplemented his income by writing for journals. Then in 1741 he wrote a scathing satire of Samuel Richardson's popular novel, Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded

    By Jo Alyson Parker.
Northern Illinois University Press, 1998. xii + 240 pages.
1 b/w illustration. Hardcover, $36. Reviewed by Jane Nardin Jo Alyson Parker's study The Author 's Inheritance: Henry Fielding, Jane Austen, and the Establishment ofthe Novel suggests that critics have underestimated the similarities between Fielding and Austen. In relating Austen to her great male predecessors, Parker argues, Richardson "generally gets the emphasis," despite the fact that "Austen's literary provincelies closer to the expansive, comic one of Fielding." Writing at a time when the novel was not yet established as a legitimate genre, Fielding offers critical commentary justifying his own narrative practices. Fifty years later, understanding that the novel's connection with feminine concerns was destroying its recently established generic respectability, Austen feels the need to defend her authority as a woman novelist.

    Henry Fielding
(see portrait Playwright and novelist, born at Sharpham Park, Glastonbury, Somerset, SW England, UK. He studied at Leyden, and began to write theatrical comedies, becoming author/manager of the Little Theatre in the Haymarket (1736). However, the sharpness of his burlesques led to the Licensing Act (1737), which closed his theatre. In search of an alternative career, he was called to the bar (1740), but his interests lay in journalism and fiction. On Richardson's publication of Pamela (1740), he wrote his famous parody, Joseph Andrews (1742). Several other works followed, notably The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling (1749). which established his reputation as a founder of the English novel. As a reward for his government journalism, he was made justice of the peace to Westminster, where he helped to form the Bow Street Runners within the police force. Female Husband, as a Methodist, pointed to the fact that he like many others believed that Methodists were using the Justification of Faith doctrine to do whatever they wanted. In his other works as well, Fielding mentions Methodism. Shamela, which was a spoof on Samuel Richardson’s Pamela , featured Shamela’s mother as a whore who sent her daughter Whitefield’s sermons. Fielding mocks Richardson’s pious novel by making Shamela’s character a religious joke, a sham, whose mother is a Methodist. A Methodist is by satirical nature a hypocrite, and Fielding created a hypocritical character with her roots in Methodism. In Tom Jones, Fielding has Tom Jones stay at the Bell’s Inn, the place of birth of George Whitefield. He also adds that the Inn remains untainted by the "pernicious principles of Methodism." Jacobite rebellions in his novel, which was written during many uprisings in England. There are several political discourses in which Tom Jones insists that "a popish priest" was not to be believed and that he would uphold his Protestant religion. When Partridge, a secret Jacobite, discusses prophecies that a "Popish priest" told him about bloodshed further on, Tom puts him down by saying "With what stuff and nonsense hast thou filled thy head? This too, I suppose, comes from the popish priest…" (Fielding 379). Earlier in the novel, Jones volunteers to fight for the Protestant cause (before he gets wounded by a sword) saying "I think no man can engage in a nobler cause than that of his religion" (316).

H aving scoured the whole coast of the enemy, as well as any of Homer's heroes ever did, or as Don Quixote or any knight-errant in the world could have done, he returned to Molly, whom he found in a condition which must give both me and my reader pain, was it to be described here. Tom raved like a madman, beat his breast, tore his hair, stamped on the ground, and vowed the utmost vengeance on all who had been concerned. He then pulled off his coat, and buttoned it round her, put his hat upon her head, wiped the blood from her face as well as he could with his handkerchief, and called out to the servant to ride as fast as possible for a side-saddle, or a pillion, that he might carry her safe home.
