Henry Fielding was born in Glastonbury in Somerset in 1707. The son of a army lieutenant and a judge's daughter, he was educated at Eton School and the University of Leiden before returning to England where he wrote a series of farces, operas and light comedies.
Fielding formed his own company and was running the Little Theatre, Haymarket, when one of his satirical plays began to upset the government. The passing of the Theatrical Licensing Act in 1737 effectively ended Fielding's career as a playwright.
In 1739 Fielding turned to journalism and became editor of The Champion . He also began writing novels, including: The Adventures of Joseph Andrews Abraham Adams (1842) and Jonathan Wild
Fielding was made a jus tice of the peace for Westminster and Middlesex in 1748. He campaigned against legal corruption and helped his half-brother, Sir John Fielding, establis h the Bow Street Runners
In 1749 Fielding's novel, The History of Tom Jones was published to public acclaim. Critics agree that it is one of the greatest comic novels in the English language. Fielding followed this success with another well received novel, Amelia
Fielding continued as a journalist and his satirical journal

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Henry Fielding
"Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was born at Sharpham Park in Somerset in 1707. In London, between 1729 and 1739, he wrote some twenty-five dramatic pieces including a series of topical satires which lampooned Sir Robert Walpole and his government. It was partly as a reaction to these that Walpole introduced the Stage Licensing Act in 1737, which effectively ended Fielding's career as a dramatist. "His novel writing career began with Shamela in 1741, a burlesque written in reaction to what he saw as the smug morality propounded by Richardson's Pamela . In the following year he published his own alternative conception of the art and purpose of the novel, Joseph Andrews , which achieved immediate popularity. "His masterpiece Tom Jones , one of the great comic novels in English literature, was published in 1749. Partly in recognition of his work as a political journalist Fielding was commissioned as a justice of the peace for Westminster and, despite his rapidly degenerating health, he devoted the last years of his life to fighting crime. He died in Lisbon on 8 October 1754."

    Biographical note
Novelist, was born at Sharpham Park, near Glastonbury. His father was General Edmund F., descended from the Earls of Denbigh and Desmond, and his mother was the daughter of Sir Henry Gould of Sharpham Park. His childhood was spent at East Stour, Dorset, and his education was received at first from a tutor, after which he was sent to Eton. Following a love affair with a young heiress at Lyme Regis he was sent to Leyden to study law, where he remained until his father, who had entered into a second marriage, and who was an extravagant man, ceased to send his allowance. Thrown upon his own resources, he came to London and began to write light comedies and farces, of which during the next few years he threw off nearly a score. The drama, however, was not his true vein, and none of his pieces in this kind have survived, unless Tom Thumb , a burlesque upon his contemporary playwrights, be excepted. Pasquin, a Dramatic Satire on the Times , and The Historical Register for 1736 , in which Walpole was satirised. This enterprise was brought to an end by the passing of the Licensing Act, 1737, making the

    Sir Henry Fielding Dickens
    Sixth Son of Charles Dickens
"Looking back now upon the years that are gone, I find that there are one or two scenes or incidents which arise with astonishing vividness to my mind that may be worth recording...I hope it will not be thought that I tell this story vaingloriously, as it was but a small matter so far as I was concerned. Nothing is farther from my thoughts. I do so because it is typical of a strange reticence on [my father's] part, an intense dislike of 'letting himself go' in private life or of using language which might be deemed strained or over-effusive; though, as will be seen later, when he was deeply moved he was at no pains to hide the depth of his emotion. Thus it came about that, though his children knew he was devotedly attached to them, there was still a kind of reserve on his part which seemed occasionally to come as a cloud between us and which I never quite understood. "In the year 1869, after I had been at college about a year, I was fortunate enough to gain one of the principal scholarships at Trinity Hall, Cambridge not a great thing, only 50 pounds a year; but I knew that this success, slight as it was, would give him intense pleasure, so I went to meet him at Higham Station upon his arrival from London to tell him of it. As he got out of the train I told him the news. He said, 'Capital! capital!' nothing more. Disappointed to find that he received the news apparently so lightly, I took my seat beside him in the pony carriage he was driving. Nothing more happened until we had got half-way to Gad's Hill, when he broke down completely. Turning towards me with tears in his eyes and giving me a warm grip of the hand, he said, 'God bless you, my boy; God bless you!' That pressure of the hand I can feel now as distinctly as I felt it then, and it will remain as strong and real until the day of my death."
