Lion served in the Germany Army during World War I , an experience that led to a leftist tilt in his writings. He soon became a figure in the literary world and was already well-known in when his first popular novel, Jud S¼Ÿ (translated as Power ), appeared. He also published Erfolg (m. "Success"), the fictionalized account of the rise and fall of the Nazi Party (which he considered, in 1930, a thing of the past) during the inflation era. The new

    Lion Feuchtwanger wurde als Sohn eines verm¶genden j¼dischen Margarinefabrikanten geboren. Er unternahm schon fr¼h Anf¤nge als Schriftsteller, die ihm bereits als Sch¼ler einen Preis einbrachten. 1903 schloss er die Schule mit dem Abitur am Wilhelmsgymnasium M¼nchen ab. Danach studierte er Geschichte Philosophie Philologie und Germanistik in M¼nchen und Berlin . Er promovierte 1907 ¼ber Heinrich Heines "Der Rabbi von Bacharach", allerdings wurde ihm der Doktorgrad sp¤ter von den Nazis wieder aberkannt. Von einer Habilitation nahm er aufgrund der Beschr¤nkungen f¼r Juden Abstand, und schrieb fortan stattdessen Theaterkritiken f¼r die von Siegfried Jacobsohn herausgegebene Zeitschrift Die Schaub¼hne . In the fall of 1940 Lion Feuchtwanger, then internationally the most widely read novelist writing in the German language, arrived in the Excalibur in New York. He was accompanied by the Reverend Waitstill Sharp, who, with his wife Martha, was sponsored by American Unitarian Association to help refugees escape Nazi persecution. In Lisbon, crowded with thousands desperate to leave Europe, Feuchtwanger was able to obtain passage to New York since Martha Sharp gave him her ticket.
