Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Born March 24, 1919 in Yonkers, New York, Lawrence Ferlinghetti earned a doctoral degree in poetry at the Sorbonne in Paris with a dissertation entitled 'The City as Symbol in Modern Poetry: In Search of a Metropolitan Tradition'. In fact he was about to become part of a metropolitan tradition himself, because after leaving Paris he moved to San Francisco , which was about to discover the Beat Generation Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin started a magazine there called 'City Lights,' named after the Charlie Chaplin movie. He and Martin established their offices on the second floor of a building on Broadway and Columbus in North Beach. They decided to open a bookstore on the floor below as a side venture, naming it after the magazine. The City Lights Bookstore became one of the most famous bookstores in the world, and still stands proudly in its original location. Doing double-time as a businessman and a poet, he began publishing original books by himself and others under the City Lights name, most notably the 'Pocket Poets Series.' The idea of Pocket Poets was to make poetry books easily affordable, and the small attractive paperback volumes are still a common sight today. Ferlinghetti published Allen Ginsberg 's ' Howl ' as Pocket Poets Number Four, and was tried on obscenity charges for this. He was declared innocent, a landmark victory for free speech.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Ferlinghetti's work is immediately accessible and appealing, and these qualities should be emphasized. He uses everyday language to articulate his themes. A problem could be his critique of social problems in America; conservative students may find him too sharply satiric about their image of this country. You might note that although Ferlinghetti articulates the "outsider" view of society, he also espouses hope for the future; for instance, poems like "Popular Manifest" (not in this anthology) give a sense of vision and expectation. Tape recordings of Ferlinghetti reading can be effective.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Ferlinghetti is a political activist and his poetical career spans and reflects thirty years of U.S. political history. His personal voice brings poetry back to the people. He has done this not only as a poet, but as a publisher, editor, translator, and discoverer of new talent.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti on the Importance of Book Reviews
The National Book Critics Circle has launched a Campaign to Save Book Reviewing . This post is part of the campaign's blog series , which features posts by concerned writers, op-eds, a petition , Q and As, and tips about how you can get involved to make sure those same owners and editors know that book sections and book culture matter.
Q : Book sections are being cut back all across the country. What do you make of this trend and what can be done about it?
A : Well, the book media especially the book reviews are part of what I call the mainstream culture of our civilization, whereas the dominant culture is the military electro-media complex. That's the

Ferlinghetti’s own work as a poet is epitomized by A Coney Island of the Mind, (1958) which is considered by many to be
his best volume (A ‘sequel,’ A Far Rockaway of the Heart was published in 1997). Some of his most famous poems are
"Sometime During Eternity," a political comment on religion, and "Dog," inspired by Homer Ferlinghetti, the poet’s best canine friend. Through City Lights, Lawrence Ferlinghetti was also responsible for the publication of many other great writers and poets. City Lights published such books as Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems and Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems.
Ferlinghetti wrote Horn on Howl , an account of the obscenity case that followed the publication of Howl . The case helped make Ginsberg and others of the Beat Generation famous. Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s body of work includes more than ten books of poetry, two novels, and many plays. Also, City Lights
books, still run by him today, has published hundreds of books. These accomplishments have made Lawrence Ferlinghetti one of the greatest contributors to American Beat Literature.
