A Guide to Staffordshire
Stoke on Trent The city of Stoke-on-Trent (also known as The Six Towns and The Potteries ) is a city in The Midlands, United Kingdom. Stoke-on-Trent is situated almost equidistant to all the major cities in the North/Midlands of the UK (Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Liverpool, Sheffield). The city is named after the town of Stoke, Stoke-on-Trent, the earliest of the six towns to be established. This city runs into Newcastle-under-Lyme, which is administered separately. Together they form a conurbation known as The Potteries with a population of 362,403. Unlike most English cities, its council is led by a Mayors in the United Kingdom; the first was Mike Wolfe then, from May 2005 to date, Mark Meredith. The city is the only one of the twelve English districts with elected mayors to use the mayor and council manager system rather than the mayor and cabinet system.
History
The Federation of the Six Towns brought together the boroughs of Hanley, Burslem, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent and Stoke-upon-Trent, together with the districts of Tunstall, Staffordshire and Fenton, Staffordshire/Fenton as the single county borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910. Stoke-on-Trent was officially granted city status in the United Kingdom in 1925. The motto of Stoke-on-Trent is Vis Unita Fortior which can be translated as: United Strength is Stronger, or Strength United is the More Powerful.

http://www.english.ucsb.edu/faculty/rraley/research/anthologies/Southey-1807.htm
Robert Southey, Specimens of the Later English Poets, with preliminary notices . 3 Volumes (London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1807) Information about the collection: The poets included in the 3 volumes are arranged in the table of contents both in chronological (from year of death) and in alphabetical order. The titles of the poems themselves are not listed in either place; in the alphabetical list both the volume and page number where the author's works might be found are given. From the Preface: These volumes are intended to accompany Mr. Ellis's well known Specimens of the Early English Poets. That series concludes with the reign of Charles II, this begins with that of James his successor: the two together will exhibit the rise, progress, decline and revival of our Poetry, and the fluctuations of our poetical taste, from the first growth of the English language to the present times. A slight difference has been made in arrangement; instead of sorting the Poets, according to the reigns in which they flourished, I have noticed each under the year of his death, where that could be ascertained, otherwise according to the date of his chief publication. It was desirable that the series should be brought down to the end of the last century, and this order determined whom it should include. In consequence of this arrangement a few names will be found, which are included in the work of Mr. Ellis. Many worthless versifyers are admitted among the English Poets, by the courtesy of criticism, which seems to conceive that charity towards the dead may cover the multitude of its offences against the libing. There were other reasons for including here the reprobate, as well as the elect.

ed. at Harrow and Oxford, where he came under the influence of Newman, whom he followed into the Church of Rome. He wrote various theological treatises, but has a place in literature for his hymns, which include The Pilgrims of the Night My God how wonderful thou art , and Sweet Saviour, bless us ere we go Fabyan, Robert (died 1513). The Concordance of Histories . It covers the period from the arrival of Brutus in England to the death of Henry VII., and deals mainly with the affairs of London. It was not printed until 1515, when it appeared under the title of The New Chronicles of England and France Fairfax, Edward (1580?-1635). Jerusalem Delivered , on which his fame is founded, is a masterpiece, one of the comparatively few translations which in themselves are literature. It was highly praised by Dryden and Waller. The first ed. appeared in 1600, and was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. F. also wrote a treatise on Demonology , in which he was a devout believer. The Shipwreck (1762), a work of genuine, though unequal, talent. The efforts which F. made to improve the poem in the successive ed. which followed the first were not entirely successful. The work gained for him the patronage of the Duke of York, through whose influence he obtained the position of purser on various warships. Strangely enough, his own death occurred by shipwreck. F. wrote other poems, now forgotten, besides a useful
