Introduction
William Cuthbert Faulkner is renowned as one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century. Born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25,1897, he spent most of his life in Mississippi and built many of his short stories and novels around his observations and experiences of life in the South. Faulkner's mythical Yoknapatawpha County serves as the locale for many of his stories and is so well known both in print and in motion pictures as to deserve a real place on the map. Myth or not, it will always survive on the literary map of the United States because of Faulkner's technical brilliance and gift for storytelling. After reading Faulkner and experiencing the rush of life so vividly depicted in his stories and in his novels, a visitor to Yoknapatawpha might agree with Lena's assessment of her experiences in Faulkner's A Light in August : "My, my. A body does get around. Here we ain't been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it's already Tennessee." (Faulkner, William.

Newark, Delaware NOVELS SHORT STORIES AND POETRY TRANSLATIONS OTHER WRITINGS William Faulkner: A Centenary Celebration, an exhibition in the Special Collections Exhibition Gallery of the Morris Library, pays tribute to one of America's most prolific and profound authors. The exhibition was on view from March 17 to June 20, 1997. The Special Collections Exhibition Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and Tuesday evenings until 8:00 p.m. The exhibit curator is Priscilla Thomas, Senior Assistant Librarian in the Special Collections Department. Literary influences on Faulkner's style included Sherwood Anderson, Charles Baudelaire, Algernon Charles Swinburne, A.E. Housman, and Francois Villon. Out of a strong traditional approach to poetry and storytelling, Faulkner created his own unique literary style which utilized stream-of-consciousness, multiple viewpoints very often expressed by a character's shift from conscious to unconscious thought, and time shifts that aren't always presented sequentially. Faulkner used this seemingly-chaotic style to weave a web of ideas together as it had never been done before. It allowed him the ability to impress upon readers his views on the themes of time, land, loyalty, and the human condition.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students are resistant to texts that withhold key information, to narrative that is obscure and/or convoluted, and to characters who don't seem to have "common sense." All of these "sins" appear in Faulkner's work. He also requires a knowledge of southern and American history that many students don't possess. Begin by emphasizing the pleasures to be gained from unraveling Faulkner's mysteries. Especially focus on his parallels to and differences from the popular myths of southern culture, as found in Gone With the Wind North and South , and popular television series set in the South. Approach his works as though they were detective stories (some of them, in fact, are). Do brief presentations of relevant historical materials. Locate the text's place in Faulkner's career, drawing parallels between the character's concerns and the way those issues touched Faulkner as well. Explain how Faulkner explored and exploded stereotypes, of southerners, African-Americans, and women. Teachers should be prepared to answer typical questions: Students want to know if he "really thought of all those things when he was writing," referring to the hidden references we uncover in symbolism, imagery, and so on. They ask if his family owned slaves and how Faulkner felt about it if they did. Some students want to know if I think Faulkner was a racist and/or a sexist.

"The Old Man"
William Faulkner reads from his story "The Old Man." This excerpt includes a dizzying range of plot elements, including a fleeing convict who is guiding a boat over the flooding Mississippi; on board is a pregnant woman about to give birth. Faulkner was born in Mississippi in 1897 and set many of his stories along the river in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1949 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1954 and 1962.
Wiliam Faulkner's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
William Faulkner reads his speech accepting the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he was awarded in 1949. At the time this speech was given, the world had just emerged from the chaos of the Second World War, and the threat of atomic annihilation hung over humanity. Faulkner's faith in the human spirit, as expressed in this speech, rejects in his way the horrors of the preceding decade.

What technique do you use to arrive at your standard?
FAULKNER
Let the writer take up surgery or bricklaying if he is interested in technique. There is no mechanical way to get the writing done, no shortcut. The young writer would be a fool to follow a theory. Teach yourself by your own mistakes; people learn only by error. The good artist believes that nobody is good enough to give him advice. He has supreme vanity. No matter how much he admires the old writer, he wants to beat him.

The mushroom had been quickly flamed so that it was nicely browned along the edges, but as juicy in the middle as rare beef. When I dipped a chunk of it into the olive oil in a shallow bowl beside my plate, I was careful to scoop up some of the freshly ground pepper at the bottom. Later on, cruising the downtown courthouse square, I ran into a friend who asked me what I'd had for lunch. When I told her, she rolled her eyes. ''When you can get a portobello sandwich in Oxford, you know we've gone too far,'' she said. I knew what she meant. I grew up in Mississippi and went to college in Oxford, at the University of Mississippi Ole Miss. Back then, a noon meal in any small town in Mississippi meant either a blue-plate special, a burger or barbecue. These days in Oxford, the Bottletree Bakery makes excellent baguettes, croissants and brioche, Don Pancho's spoons up Caribbean fare, and the Henry Cafe serves strictly vegetarian fare on Fiestaware, in a minimalist setting. You can still get excellent barbecue and blue plates including huge breakfasts of ham steaks, grits and biscuits at Smitty's and good fried chicken breast on a stick at the Chevron station, but jazzier options are available, as well.
