Philip Jose Farmer
Philip Jos Farmer (born January 26, 1918) is an American author, principally known for his science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories. Many of Farmer's works involve reworking existing characters from fiction and history, such as The Other Log of Phileas Fogg , filling in the missing time periods from Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days . His favorite subjects for this type of work are the pulp heroes Tarzan and Doc Savage. This has led to a burgeoning of a particular type of this form of fiction which is frequently referred to by reference to Farmer's original premise, the Wold Newton family. His Riverworld series follows the adventures of Richard Burton and Samuel Clemens through a bizarre afterlife in which every human to ever have lived is simultaneously resurrected.

John W. Campbell doesn't want it. The writer sends the story to H.L. Gold at Galaxy , but the manuscript is again returned. The story is just too mature for a genre marketed toward adolescent males: 'there is no sex in science fiction'. Disgruntled, the writer resigns to try one last time and submits the story to Sam Mines at Startling Stories . This time comes a different response. Mines, sensing he has a winner, albeit a controversial one; buys the story and publishes it in his August 1952 issue. Good (2/5)
I first read this in 1970 and most recently on the 14th December 2002. On the edge of known space is the planet Kareen, also known as "Dante's Joy". The inhabitants worship the goddess Boonta and her sons Yess (the good one) and Algul (bad to the bone). The two gods are rivals for physical manifestation for only one can exist at a time. Every seven year the planet undergoes seven nights of physical and mental upheaval in what is called the Night of Light . During this time believers in the planetary religion believe that the manifested god risks murder by supporters of his rival. However, the natives believe that during this Night the power of the goddess Boonta will pervade the planet. They believe that any survivor of this chaotic, hallucinatory Night will be transformed physically. The result may be something wonderful or terrible, depending on the individual's personality and presumably on the whim of the god. One might say this is a religious detective thriller. No, it’s not the “Name Of the Rose” – a worthy book but seriously lacking in the SF content – it’s a science-fiction, religious, detective thriller. It’s also in two parts. There’s a first part, and after that, unsurprisingly, there’s a second part. They’re quite different.

All those who ever lived on Earth have found themselves resurrected healthy, young, and naked as newborns on the grassy banks of a mighty river, in a world unknown. Miraculously provided with food, but with no clues to the meaning of their strange new afterlife, billions of people from every period of Earth's history and prehistory must start again. Sir Richard Francis Burton would be the first to glimpse the incredible way-station, a link between worlds. This forbidden sight would spur the renowned nineteenth century explorer to uncover the truth. Along with a remarkable group of compatriots, including Alice Liddell Hargreaves (the Victorian girl who was the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland), an English-speaking Neanderthal, a WWII Holocaust survivor, and a wise extraterrestrial, Burton sets sail on the magnificent river. His mission: to confront humankind's mysterious benefactors, and learn the true purpose innocent or evil of the Riverworld...

It worked so well that he has been working the same features into his novels and stories ever since. One of his noteworthy early stories was "Open to Me, My Sister", whose title gives an idea why it was considered "disgusting" by potential publishers. Not that Farmer's tales all strike the same note. In fact, they include some of the most varied and exotic writing in sci-fi, sometimes crossing over into the fantasy realm. His Father Carmody series of stories in the 1950s features a murderous priest who sorts out theological puzzles on various planets. In his novel
