Belated Reviews PS#19: Philip Jose Farmer
When readers won't be satisfied with the number of books or stories that their favorite authors have placed in their universes, fan fiction results. Sometimes it's not that the readers can't get enough, so much as that they feel that the author got it wrong. Sometimes fan fiction results from the desire to mix and match favorite characters to have Dr. Who appear on the Enterprise, for instance. Philip Jose Farmer has made a career out of writing fan fiction professionally. Some of Farmer's books some good ones, too are placed in his own home-made universes, but he's never so at home as when he's playing in someone else's sandbox. And even when the only universe he's playing in is his own, he still overlooks no opportunity to mix and match. He does it well, with a quirky combination of absurd premise and careful attention to realistic detail. Philip Jose Farmer has been writing since the early fifties, but I'd place his best work in the seventies. Among his books: "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" (****) is placed on the ultimate mix-and-match stage though the actors are drawn from history, not fiction: a literal afterlife. The place is the Riverworld, a possibly artificial world with an impossibly long river snaking over it. Along this river, everyone whoever lived, from primitives to people slightly in our future, is resurrected simultaneously. Necessities are provided, by what might as well be magic, and humanity is left to work out its second chance. The hero of the story is Sir Richard Francis Burton, the explorer who is best remembered today for his translation of the Arabian Nights. With numerous other familiar names from all of history, he sets out to discover the secrets behind the Riverworld its reason for being.

January 16th: The monthly update is late again, the latest one yet in fact. However if you consider that last month's update was also late, not online until the 13th, then this one is only three days late... We also don't have a lot to report on in this update as nothing new has been added to the website. This is primarily due to most of last month being taken up putting together the next issue of Farmerphile Yes, Virginia (or Bette in this case) there will be an 11th issue of Farmerphile, and more beyond that. We first announced this back in August 2007, but it bears repeating. Farmerphile began with enough unpublished material by Phil for a planned run of ten issues, including the serialization of UP FROM THE BOTTOMLESS PIT . Thanks to Bob Barrett's generosity and further trips to Peoria and searches through Phil's files have secured material for another four or five—or possibly even more—quarterly issues. While we don't have the cover art or the full contents of issue #11 listed online yet we can tell you it has articles by regulars Bette Farmer, Paul Spiteri

Executive summary: Riverworld saga Science fiction author Phillip Jose Farmer is noteworthy for his Riverworld saga ( To Your Scattered Bodies Go ) and his copious infusions of sexuality into a previously chaste genre. Farmer has authored roughly seventy-five books including Venus On The Half Shell , a novel penned under the pseudonym Kilgore Trout. He has been the recipient of numerous science fiction awards and distinctions including the Nebula Grand Master Award (2001) and the Lifetime Achievement World Fantasy Award (2001). Farmer’s short piece "Night of Light" (first published in 1957) sparked Jimi Hendrix 's "Purple Haze". Phillip Jose Farmer is also noted for his fascination with trickster characters and his penchant for literary references and allusions. Born North Terre Haute, Indiana, Farmer's family lived variously in Indianapolis and Missouri before settling in Peoria, Illinois (in a house with an outdoor toilet) in 1923. It was in this home that six year-old Phillip saw a silver dirigible flying over, sparking his interest in lighter-than-air craft (a common feature in his stories). As the young Farmer's reading skills developed he turned to

Handbook For The Shipwrecked
To Nan Gerding
Chapter 1 FOR TWO YEARS Alan Green had lived without hope. From the day the spaceship had crashed on this unknown planet he had resigned himself to the destiny created for him by accident and mathematics. Chances against another ship landing within the next hundred years were a million to one. Therefore it would do no good to sit around waiting for rescue. Much as he loathed the idea, he must live the rest of his life here, and he must squeeze as much blood as he could out of this planet-sized turnip. There wasn't much to squeeze. In fact, it seemed to him that he was the one losing the blood. Shortly after he'd been cast away he'd been made a slave. Now, suddenly, he had hope.

Farmer, Philip Jose. To You Scattered Bodies Go . New York: Berkley Medallion, 1971. 222pp.
Every one has blind spots and holes in their reading histories, classics missed or ignored or just despised. There've been lots of classics I've ignored ( Book of the New Sun ) or despised (ok, maybe not despised, but disapointed ) over the years. However, I do make it a point to try and catch up on the ones I've just missed. Sometimes I'm disappointed, especially if it's reaching fairly far back in history. Often the literary style of a bygone era just doesn't click. Sometimes, however, I'm really pleased to discover a gem. Such is the case with the first book in Philip Jose Farmer 's Riverworld series. The premise is well known characters are reincarnated along the shores of a vast river along with everyone who has ever lived on earth. The first volume in the series follows the adventures of

PHILIP JOSE FARMER (1918- ) was one of SF's groundbreaking mavericks, an author who loved to write speculatively about sex and religion at a time when most SF editors and publishers considered these topics taboo. TO YOUR SCATTERED BODIES GO is the first of several novels and stories by Farmer about "Riverworld," a place where all of mankind has been reincarnated along the banks of an enormous river. In the first volume, Sir Richard Francis Burton - explorer, linguist, and translator of The Arabian Nights - joins forces with Alice Hargreaves - the real-life model for Carroll's Alice in Wonderland - and a Neanderthal named Kazz, against Nazi aviator, Hermann Goering. Subsequent chapters in Farmer's endlessly entertaining epic involve historical characters as diverse as Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Jesus Christ. Richard M. Powers' typically abstract cover design illustrates the novel's opening sequence. Burton has just died, and awakes to find himself in some kind of uncanny between-lives area: "The rods came up from an abyss without bottom and soared into an abyss without ceiling. That grayness into which the rods and the bodies, up and down, right and left, disappeared was neither the sky nor the the earth. There was nothing in the distance except the lackluster of infinity. . . . By then he understood that he was in some colossal chamber and that the metal rods were radiating some force that somehow supported and revolved millions maybe billions of human beings."

  • Farmer, Philip Jose 1918–
American science fiction writer. (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 1-4, rev. ed.) Farmer is best known and most often referred to in critical works about science fiction as the first to introduce speculation about sex intelligently as a legitimate subject of science-fiction extrapolation…. [But] we [also] have in [his] stories the premise that a physical species, akin to man in every way (emotionally and physically), had advanced its civilization and control of the secrets of nature so far that it was able to create entire universes, closed cosmoses, establish whatever arbitrary laws of "science" it wished to govern these man-made continuums, and then use them for its own private playgrounds!… [Farmer's] novels are a veritable fireworks of new concepts in biology and fantasy lands—the creations fall over each other and the possibilities continue to burst from Farmer's mind in ever-growing...
