How surprised he was to find, one afternoon, as though sown by the wind and summoned by his dreams, a woman standing barefoot, starved and frowsy in the doorway of his barn. She was a pale flower, nearly bald and dressed in a rough shift. He blinked stupidly at the vision. Light poured around her like smoke and swirled at her gesture of need. She spoke.
"Ich habe Hunger."
In the center of the town on the other side of the river there stood a convent made of yellow bricks. Hauled halfway across Minnesota from Little Falls by pious drivers, they still held the peculiar sulfurous moth gold of the clay outside that town. The word "Fleisch" was etched in shallow letters on each one: Fleisch Company Brickworks. Donated to the nuns at cost. The word, of course, was covered by mortar each time a brick was laid. However, because she had organized a few discarded bricks behind the convent into the base for a small birdbath, one of the younger nuns knew, as she gazed at the mute order of the convent's wall, that she lived within the secret repetition of that one word.
Sister Cecellia, however, was emptied. Thinned. It was as though her soul were neatly removed by a drinking straw and siphoned into the green pool of quiet that lay beneath the rippling cascades of notes. One day, exquisite agony built and released, built higher, released more forcefully until slow heat spread between her fingers, up her arms, stung at the points of her bound breasts, and then shot straight down.

This volume seeks to enrich teachersand studentsunderstanding of the fictional world Louise Erdrich creates and to address the challenges of teaching her novels and poetry. The first part of the book provides background readings that establish a context for teaching Erdrich and acquaint teachers with Native American traditions, history, customs, and cultureespecially those of the Ojibwe, or Chippewa. In the second section, experienced teachers of Erdrich discuss the strategies they use to engage students in a sometimes unfamiliar world. Essays provide information on Erdrich's tribe, the Turtle Mountain Chippewa of North Dakota, and an overview of tribal history for the past 150 years; sort through Erdrich's large cast of fictional characters, with their complicated family ties and clan relationships; examine her collaborative relationship with her late husband, Michael Dorris; and offer analysis, cultural references, and approaches to teaching Erdrich's most widely anthologized poems.

Victoria Lautman talks to the author about her new work, The Painted Drum
By Victoria Lautman Louise Erdrich's dad doled out a nickel for every story she wrote as a child, and there was plenty of fodder in Erdrich's half-German, part-Ojibwe household in North Dakota. Drawing on this distinctive heritage, she made her auspicious d©but in 1984 with Love Medicine (it snagged the National Book Critics' Circle Award) and since then has produced poetry, fiction, children's books, nonfiction, and short stories. Erdrich's ten novels, imbued with Native American life and characters, resonate universally, and with tremendous lyrical power. The latest addition, The Painted Drum , is no exception: troubled-even ruined-lives are woven together across time, linked by a sacred drum with a tragic origin. Victoria Lautman interviewed Louise Erdrich, who spoke from her home in Minneapolis, where she also operates the independent bookstore Birchbark Books and Native Arts. Q: "Boozhoo!" Doesn't that mean "hello" in Ojibwe?

Her widely acclaimed debut novel Love Medicine garnered prestigious awards, and quickly made its way onto bestseller lists and into readers' hearts. In this full-length critical volume, Stookey uncovers the layers of wisdom and humor embedded in Erdrich's engaging writing. Stookey, analyzing each novel in turn, examines the characters and themes that recur in Erdrich's canon of interconnected stories. This insightful analysis helps students and lovers of fine literature approach Erdrich's work with greater appreciation for her bold narrative style. This study begins with a fascinating biographical account, tracing early influences in Louise Erdrich's life. The subsequent chapter discusses Erdrich's place in literary tradition, as a novelist, a poet, and a storyteller. It also offers lucid analysis of how Erdrich skillfully manages to reconcile traditional and experimental approaches to the construction of her novels. A full chapter then examines each novel in terms of literary style, plot, character development, and theme. Alternate critical approaches to Erdrich's writing are also given for each of her six major works to date. A bibliography and lists of general criticism, biographical sources, and reviews complete this volume, making it an indispensable resource for any reader seeking to develop a greater understanding of Erdrich's writings.

Send this interview to a friend Louise Erdrich explores mysteries and miracles on the reservation INTERVIEW BY ALDEN MUDGE When Louise Erdrich finished writing The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, she went back and read through the works of William Faulkner. "I do that every so often," Erdrich says during a call to her home in Minnesota. "And I always dip into Proust. And then I dip out of Proust." This makes sense, in a literary sort of way. To immerse oneself in the most luminous of the novels in Erdrich's Dakota cycle Love Medicine The Beet Queen Tracks (1988) and, now, The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse is, in some ways, to plunge into a Proustian stream, where time flows backward as easily as it flows forward. Even more to the point, over the years, any number of reviewers have seen parallels between Erdrich's creation in novel after novel of a mythical Ojibwe Indian reservation and its environs near the Minnesota-North Dakota border, and Faulkner's creation of his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. "I've finally figured out that I'm just working on one long novel," Erdrich says in response to a question about the layers of legend and meaning that accumulate with each new novel. "I think it is useful to have read the other books. But I try very hard to make each book its own book. It is its own book. But they all connect in some way."

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Karen Louise Erdrich was born June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. The oldest of seven children, Erdrich grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Her German-American father and French-Ojibwe mother taught at the Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding school. Her maternal grandfather had once served as the tribal chair of the Turtle Mountain (North Dakota) Reservation. She entered Dartmouth College (Hanover, New Hampshire) in 1972, part of the college's first coeducational class. She graduated from Dartmouth in 1976, with a Bachelor of Arts. Following graduation, she returned to North Dakota to teach poetry and writing to young people through the State Arts Council. She next attended Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland) and graduated with a Master's degree in 1979. She married Michael Dorris in October 1981. Dorris had been one of Erdrich's teachers at Dartmouth, and a romance developed. The couple separated in 1995; Dorris committed suicide in 1997.
