Enghdal wrote two of my favorite SF juveniles, "Enchantress From The Stars" and "The Far Side of Evil." Evil in particular is a superb book (and would make a cheap and really good SF movie ...)
Engdahl has a new book coming out for the first time in 28 years.

The website comes off pretty didactic, but I'm going to buy the book anyway I used to tolerate Heinlein's preaching pretty well, because at least early on he wrapped it inside first rate stories. If you're not already an Engdahl fan, this may not be the place to start, but if you are, now you know it's out there.
I got asked by a couple people to do a second draft of the "Infinite Methods" post. I'm not going to do this often revising blog entries is way more energy than I'm putting into this but given the subject matter of the Infinite Methods post, what it looks like boiled down is a fair request. Probably be up this weekend. Posted by Dan Moran at 10:19 AM Labels: Sylvia Louise Engdahl

Sylvia Engdahl is the author of six science fiction novels, first published by Atheneum in the 1970s as Young Adult (teen) books but also liked by many adult readers. All have been reissued by different publishers in the 21st century and are currently in print.
The Far Side of Evil
(updated in 2003) is based on this concept.
Sylvia was born in Los Angeles and received her degree in 1955 from the University of California at Santa Barbara . After teaching for a short time, she switched to the then-new field of computer programming, starting as a trainee with the RAND Corporation (later the System Development Corporation), which was developing the SAGE Air Defense System . For ten years she did assembly-language systems and utility programming for SAGE, ultimately becoming a Computer Systems Specialist.
In 1967 she left programming and moved to Portland, Oregon, where during the late 1970s she did graduate work in anthropology focused on the evolutionary significance of space colonization. Her first novel Enchantress from the Stars , which deals with her views on how mature extraterrestrial civilizations would view less advanced ones, was a 1971 Newbery Honor Book, winner of the Children's Literature Association's 1990 Phoenix Award given "from the perspective of time" to the best book for children published in the year 20 years prior to the award date, and a finalist for the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category.

Engdahl is best known for Enchantress from the Stars , which was a Newbery Honor Book , the winner of the Children's Literature Association's Phoenix Award, and a finalist for Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category. Enchantress from the Stars can be enjoyed by younger readers than her other novels, although it is intended for teen readers, and because of its Newbery Honor status she acquired a reputation as an author for children. However, most of her books are not appropriate for preadolescent readers. The Far Side of Evil has the same heroine as Enchantress from the Stars but should not be called a sequel, as it is a completely independent story for older teens. Its

Carol Littlejohn ). Next, her techniques of using the characters and plot to express her philosophy will be discussed as well as her unique contribution to young adult literature. Perhaps a brief biography is necessary to explain how Engdahl became interested in science and in writing for young adults. Born in 1933, Engdahl graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and, after a short career as a teacher, Engdahl developed programs for air defense computers. She enjoyed the technical writing and was perhaps influenced by the successful young adult career of her mother, Mildred Allen Butler (Silvey, 1995, pp. 224-225 Engdahl's Philosophy Engdahl's novels are labeled as science fiction but are certainly not traditional science fiction with stereotypical robots and ray-guns. Instead, Engdahl's plots are more concerned with scientific philosophy than technology. In a sense Engdahl's philosophy is similar to the philosophy of the Star Trek series, a television series that began in 1965, lasted only three years, but had already achieved cult status. The Star Trek series stresses the importance of space exploration in a highly complex universe; the space missions are always peaceful excursions into exploring the unknown. However, the crew from the Star Trek Enterprise are under orders not to assume an active role in changing alien civilizations. Engdahl's scientific philosophy is remarkably similar.

(The second book in the Elana series) A novel by
Sylvia Engdahl
by Sylvia Engdahl Elana, a newly graduated agent of the Federation Anthropological Service, is sent to observe Toris, a Youngling planet poised on the brink of nuclear war. Her primary directive is merely to observe. She cannot reveal her alien origin or interfere in any way with the planet's natural course of evolution. But does this mean she must stand by and watch as an entire world drives itself to destruction? Elana's fellow agent, Randil, should never have been sent on the mission. If his emotions get the better of him, then his compassion for the Torisians may motivate him to intervene. Even with the best of intentions, his actions may tip the balance of power and bring about the holocaust that he is so desperately trying to prevent. The endangered planet's only hope is Elana, who must choose between siding with a renegade agent or stopping him at any cost.
