This month I take my LSAT, so I will have to sit this one out! If someone wants to take over my spot as the discussion "leader" that will be fine.
Otherwise I say just post at will. It doesn't seem too unruly.
have a great read!
Curtis Darren Garrison 05-28-01, 04:55 PM What is it about such an old book that is causing it to get so many votes? I'd think a "book of the month" would be oh, I donno, something published within the last few YEARS? CKMorpheus 05-28-01, 09:05 PM Damn! I wanted choke. But oh well. I'm sure this will be a good novel. Isn't it part of a series? Eric F 05-28-01, 10:03 PM Ender is a great book. Yes it's part of a series but the later books take a markedly different tone than the first, so it sort of stands alone.
I'm sure any sci-fi/fantasy fan has read this book so lots of folks will be able to participate. It's also a standard suggested read for junior high students, and military instruction. Interesting stuff.

65. Double-enders [Archive] - The WoodenBoat Forum
Bill Atkin had (at least) two separate families of double enders. The first is the Eric/Thistle series with a beam/length of about .34.

The WoodenBoat Forum Designs / Plans PDA View Full Version : Double-enders Garv 07-28-2000, 12:36 PM I've noticed in WoodenBoat's study plans, you don't see many designs for double-ended cruisers over 25 ft. There is of course "Annie" and "Grey Seal". Given the sea-kindliness of the design it seems there would be more offerings from the architects. Any thoughts? Jack Logan 07-28-2000, 12:49 PM Lots of double enders in all sizes. See Robert Perry, William Garden, Joel White William Atkin, LFH, on and on. Paul H Miller 07-28-2000, 04:05 PM I may get royally flamed for this...
I don't believe that double-enders are really more seaworthy than other moderate transom shapes. Their real problem is a lack of reserve buoyancy. Their big advantage, and the reason why Colin Archer and others used them for pilot boats, is the reduced liklihood of serious damage when leaving the side of a pier or ship. The lack of stern "quarters" allows the vessel to turn and not have contact.
A short (or no) overhang flat transom like those on H-28's, 12 1/2's, etc. really is better.
(Not that it matters, but I have three double-enders (28', and 2-17'ers...)

As in, why does one guy look like he's been in a fight, and why is the other guy laughing at him? Click on the image for a larger view. Thanks for all who sent in photos this weekend. I have enought to keep us going another couple weeks. Nonetheless, please send in more email them to mystery At humbug .com. DXMachina The California Angels wore that uniform style from 1993-96.
Cliff Corcoran That's Tony Phillips. I think Rex Hudler is the redhead over his shoulder. And is that one of the Lachman brothers over the other shoulder?
Dan Lucero I might be way off, but that looks to me like Tony Phillips, who played for the California Angels in 1995.

Grade: B-
Rating: R
Released: Friday, June 14, 2002

Cast:
If "Windtalkers" were just about the Windtalkers the Navajo Indians whose encoded language helped America win World War II it would be a great film. That story is noble, and not often told. It has drama inherent in it. But director John Woo has chosen to make a movie that tells not just of the Windtalkers, but of the general horrors of war, complete with gore and dismemberment and trauma and cliches. How war freaks people out, and how terrible the thing is that story is told all the time, and it's being told again here. If you've seen "We Were Soldiers" or "Saving Private Ryan," you've seen most of "Windtalkers." The heart of the film concerns Private Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach), a Navajo from Arizona who enlists with his friend Charlie Whitehorse (Roger Willie) to help the United States with a new plan for winning the war in the Pacific. The Japanese won't be able to break America's codes if they're spoken in a language the Japanese have never heard before: Navajo. Yahzee, Whitehorse and their tribesmen are vital, then, and Sgt. Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage) is assigned to guard Yahzee with his life, and to prevent the code from falling into Japanese hands at all costs.

A 25' 2" Double-Ended Knockabout
By William Atkin A Fine Knockabout Cruising Auxiliary of a Very Seaworthy Type, Arranged Particularly for Amateur Construction I have had more than a little experience with hulls of the double end type as typified by the late Colin Archer. In all of these I have stuck very close to the lines as made by that master of the double ender fishing boat the kind that is used off the rough coasts of the Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Many of you will remember the design which we called Eric , and which was a collaboration of ideas of Bill Nutting, Arthur Hilderbrand and myself; but all hinged on a most excellent design of a large double end life boat which was one of Mr. Archer's finest creations. I have since done a number of double end designs, but all of these were very much after the manner of Colin Archer and I have tried to have these known as Atkin-Archer double enders. Eric Jr. is, however, a child of my own brain. And while it resembles the Archer boats, it is essentially different. This one is not of heavy displacement, and is woefully narrow in comparison to any of the original types. It is shoal of body and very different in profile, especially below the water line. It has the ear marks of the Scandinavian in its stem and rudder, the latter being pure Colin Archer, and I think is very handsome. The principal dimensions of this new double ender are as follows: L.O.A. 25 feet, 2 inches; L.W.L. 21 feet, 6 inches; breadth 7 feet, 7 inches; draft 4 feet, inches. The freeboard at the stem is 2 feet, 11 1/2 inches, at the stern 2 feet, 2 inches, and at the lowest point, 1 foot, 7 3/4 inches. The displacement is 7,000 pounds. There will be 3,400 pounds of iron ballast on the keel and a matter of 200 pounds inside. So you see this
