Historical Note
"On May 4, 5, and 6, 1990 a Gathering of Poets was held at Kent State University in conjunction with the May 4th 20th Anniversary Commission events. Approximately 125 poets from all over the United States responded to personal invitations or to the open call to poets to come to Kent State on May 4th and remember the four students left dead and the nine others wounded by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. An ad-hoc committee of the May 4th 20th Anniversary Commission planned all the poetry events. Members of this committee were poets who live in Kent, some affiliated with Kent State University and some not .... In addition to the poets who attended the Gathering of Poets, many others who were not able to attend sent poems or messages to be read." So describes Gathering convener and poet Maggie Anderson in the proposal for the published anthology, A Gathering of Poets which resulted from the convergence of poets at Kent State in May of 1990.

Lynn Emanuel
University of Pittsburgh Press, $25 (cloth), $12.95 (paper) by Barbara Fischer Eros and motion, even as they are resisted, drive the poems in Then, Suddenly , Lynn Emanuel’s third collection. The verb "to move" in her work always conveys its double senseboth to journey and to feel, to respond to restlessness as well as to pathos or desire. In a 1993 interview with , Emanuel emphasizes that in her first two books, "[s]exuality is move, go. In my book, people use sexuality to get out, to get around, or to get money. What I think is very American about The Dig and Hotel Fiesta is that sense of travel; moving where doesn’t matter since it’s just the movement that’s necessary." She then cites Gertrude Stein’s definition of America, a definition that appears in the penultimate poem of

Swedenborg devoted the first half of his life to scientific investigations. Thereafter he turned his full attention to theology, metaphysics and started to explore mystical experience. Among Swedenborg's most popular books are Heaven and Hell and Earths in Universe . His spiritual writing influenced Emerson, Goethe, Henry James Sr., Dostoevsky, and William Blake. During his life, Swedenborg published over 50 works. His books have been translated into some thirty languages. "There are two worlds, a spiritual world where angels and spirits are, and a natural world where men are." (from True Christian Religion Emanuel Swedenborg was born in Stockholm, the second son of Jesper Svedberg (1653-1735), a Lutheran bishop and hymn writer, and Sara Behm. Both families had acquired wealth in the mining business. Swedenborg's mother died in 1696 and his father married again. He was feared by the royal court because of his sermons against abuse of power, and loved by people who believed he had powers as an exorciser. From the age of eleven to twenty-one Swedenborg studied mechanics, geography, astronomy, and mathematics at the University of Uppsala. Upon graduation he travelled to Holland, Germany and England. Because the English authorities believed that plague had broken in Sweden, his ship was obliged to wait offshore for six weeks. Swedenborg went ashore anyway, was caught and very nearly hanged. He lived in England from 1710 to 1713, and formed a lasting love for its culture. In 1716 King Charles XII of Sweden named him special assessor to the Royal College of Mines. He worked in several scientific fields from mathematics and physics to geology, and twice attempted to marry, but without success. Swedenborg's career also included extensive service in the upper house of the Swedish national legislature. In 1716-1718 he edited the scientific magazine

Home Lynn Sweet Dean vs. Emanuel By Lynn Sweet Posted: 07/13/06 12:00 AM [ET] Talks are under way. They are trying to settle on a figure. This squabble has been playing out in the press since May. Emanuel wants to get his hands on Dean-controlled money for his targeted districts. Dean did not want to sign a blank check on an Emanuel-conceived television-ad air war. Shifting the approach to an appeal that might sit better with the ground-operation-oriented Dean, Emanuel sent Dean a letter last month asking for $100,000 for field operations in each targeted district.

Andrena Zawinski: Poetry in Review
Then, Suddenly, by Lynn Emanuel, University of Pittsburgh Press
L ynn Emanuel's language is truly beautiful, making the reader feel at home in sounds and cadences and figures, as Eavan Boland aptly puts it. And if what makes poetry is this ability to sing out, then every line in each poem of Emanuel's latest collection resonates with the stuff of poetry, effused in an enchantment that draws the reader into a group of poems that rise tall among the best of contemporary American poetry. Emanuel crooks her finger and pulls you right into her book. In her address to the readerher first poem, Like God , which precedes the three segments of the bookshe gives you a part to play, the one with the name of Reader. In this role you become interloper and participant at once, from the very first line: "Like God,/you hover over this page, staring down on a small town..." As you become mesmerized: "But you know this story.../is really About Your Life..." the responsibility of what happens when creative mind meets text is turned over to you: ".. you, who have/ been hovering above this page, holding/ the book in your hands, like God, reading." The poems bring home the idea that a poem does not begin to mean until it has the reader and all the reader brings to it with his or her own experience. In the first part of this trilogy, in the lead poem

After Elton on Breakthrough Film Roles for Black and Latino Gay Men
With the exception of Maurice's Jamal's soon-to-be-released independent feature Dirty Landry —which we profile in the next (?) issue of The Advocate —the cinematic landscape for black gay men has been practically barren. "It’s barely a landscape," notes veteran television producer Kevin E. Taylor at a comprehensive new analysis at Logo-owned After Elton. "It’s a window garden at best." The editors After Elton asked us to survey and analyze the more important roles for black gay men and Latinos on the big screen. The piece went live last last week and has caused a strong buzz in comments and across the e-telligentsia. Was Brother to Brother more important than Patrik-Ian Polk's PUNKS ? Should Isaiah's role in Get On on the Bus be reevaluated give recent developments? Rev Kev, director Maurice Jamal and critics such as Keith Boykin J. Brotherove , and author Fred Smith express cautious optimism.
On the other hand, several Latino voices say they have even fewer choice and are largely unimpressed with their portrayals in Hollywood, including the well-received

ADDICTION - A FAMILY DISEASE Marilyn Emanuel, MS, is the Family Program Coordinator at Father Martin’s Ashley, a non-profit center for the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction, in Havre de Grace, Maryland. She works with her colleague, Patricia Denney, in the development and implementation of Ashley’s five-day family program. Together they run Family Wellness Program. As a family therapist, Lynn (as Marilyn is called) also leads a daily multi-family group therapy for patients and family members. Father Martin’s Ashley phone number is 1-800-799-HOPE. Lynn was interviewed by Kathy Lowe Petersen, President of the Lowe Family Foundation, on the subject of alcoholism as a family disease. That interview follows: Kathy: One of the reasons I started the Lowe Family Foundation is that my father was an alcoholic. And when our father died my siblings and I found out that our reactions to his disease were common. We had never shared those feelings with each other before. We began to see alcoholism as a family disease Lynn: You were following the rules of addicted families – "don’t talk, don’t trust, and don’t feel." When people start to talk, that starts to raise their awareness of what they’ve been through. Until you know what the problem is, how can you know what to ask? I would say that asking questions is the beginning stage for families, who are typically confused and lacking information.
