"We have to change the negative things into positive. In today's Japanese film industry we always say we don't have enough budget, that people don't go to see the films. But we can think of it in a positive way, meaning that if audiences don't go to the cinema we can make any movie we want. After all, no matter what kind of movie you make it's never a hit, so we can make a really bold, daring movie. There are many talented actors and crew, but many Japanese movies aren't interesting. Many films are made with the image of what a Japanese film should be like. Some films venture outside those expectations a little bit, but I feel we should break them." "The Black Dahlia" Premiere - James Ellroy and Josh Friedman Interviews
"The Black Dahlia" author James Ellroy is doing something a little unusual for a writer: he's actively promoting the film adaptation of his book. Ellroy took part in the press junket and even walked the red carpet at "The Black Dahlia" premiere in support of the film. Also pulling red carpet duty was "The Black Dahlia" screenwriter Josh Friedman. Check out what Ellroy and Friedman had to say about bringing this intriguing story of murder, love and obsession to the big screen:

Author James Ellroy is thrilled with film version of "L.A. Confidential"
"I think that if a writer options a novel to a studio or to film makers in general, then he has an obligation to keep his mouth shut if the movie gets made and it's all f up." So opines James Ellroy, the gruff and sardonic author of the 1950s crime and corruption best seller "L.A. Confidential." So why is he making press appearances to promote the film adaptation? Quite simply, he's taken with the movie. "I am in the wonderful position of actually wanting to open my mouth and extol 'L.A. Confidential' the film." In San Francisco for a day with the film's director Curtis Hanson, Ellroy could be straight out of the 1950s himself, with his wire-rim glasses, a policeman's mustache and very short hair that wouldn't be mussed by a handsome fedora. He speaks dryly, often with the tips of his fingers tapped together in front of his face, and at first seems a little abrasive. Like your favorite aloof college professor with a little Sam Spade thrown in. The author sold the film rights to "Confidential," the third in a quartet of novels about 1950s Los Angeles cops, just before the book was published in 1990 and thought nothing of it.

MeeVee Exclusive: 5 Questions with James Ellroy
By James Rocchi Murder by the Book , CourtTV’s new miniseries, asks five of America’s most famous crime authors to talk about the true-crime cases that resonate for them. Future episodes will feature Michael Connelly ( The Poet, The Concrete Blonde ), Jonathan Kellerman ( Gone, When the Bough Breaks ), Faye Kellerman ( False Prophet The Ritual Bath ) and Lisa Scottoline ( Dirty Blonde, Moment of Truth ); the pilot features James Ellroy. Best known for the novels L.A. Confidential and American Tabloid , Ellroy is a unique figure in crime fiction; many people including Ellroy himself will tell you he’s transcended it. Ellroy’s life and work were irrevocably shaped by the 1958 murder of his mother, Jean Hilliker Ellroy a murder that remains unsolved. Ellroy’s fascination with murder shaped his fiction (including The Black Dahlia , recently brought to the big screen by Brian DePalma) and his non-fiction, including his memoir My Dark Places . Ellroy is the subject of the premiere episode of Murder by the Book and, he says, it’s also the last time he’ll speak publicly about his mother’s death. Charming and blunt, polite and brash, and not without a certain rough-hewn poetry, Ellroy spoke with MeeVee from

    The Bottom Line
The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy is an exquisitely written book of murder and obsession that takes the true details of the unsolved 1947 Elizabeth Short murder and creates a fictional story of a police detective determined to solve the case. The Black Dahlia is a page turning mystery novel, but it is also much more. Ellroy uses the story to delve into the dark recesses of the human psyche and force the reader to deal with obsession, evil, right and wrong.

I was a little puzzled why Hot Fuzz Hot Fuzz Shaun of the Dead Shaun also only made $3 mil its first weekend and accumulated only $13 million in the U. S back in 2004. Shaun is probably an example of a film that is notable less for how many people like it than for who it is that like it, people like Harry Knowles and Kevin Smith. The same, perhaps, with Hot Fuzz , and no doubt it will be as big on DVD as Shaun ended up being. Hot Fuzz Bad Boys and Lethal Weapon The Last Action Hero . And anyway, most buddy cop films are already half comedies to begin with. But second, the action is all set in an English village with jokes directed at peculiar English concerns, which flow over or under the heads of mono-cultural Americans. Well, I hope it does better on DVD because it is a terrific, hilarious film that also earns its place among the films of Michael Bay, Richard Donner, and Shane Black. Going the other way, there are certain American personalities who always attract European documentarians. One of them is the cartoonist John Callahan, who has had at least three docs made about hiim. Another is James Ellroy.

Rapid-fire, staccato writing, each sentence barely a few words long. Possibly the most original, least pandering, crime-fiction novel I've ever read. You have to meet James Ellroy more than half-way on this one, it takes quite an effort to make it through the first 100 pages or so, after which you get somewhat used to the disorienting feeling of reading this kind of prose. Oswald stepped out. Oswald wore handcuffs. Two cops flanked him. They walked through the basement. They faced some reporters. They cleared a path fast. A man jumped out. Dark suit / fedora. Right arm outstretched. He stepped up. He shot near point-blank. Wayne blinked. Wayne saw it oh fuck.
