Audio Interview with James Ellroy
James Ellroy, author of The Big Nowhere L.A. Confidential and American Tabloid , captures the sounds, language and sites of the 40s in mystery novel The Black Dahlia The Black Dahlia, which has more recently been made into a film, is based on the true story of a murder case of 1947 in LA. A 22-year-old woman was found sexually assaulted and sliced in half five days after she went missing. Once the press discovered that, while alive, this young woman dressed completely in black hoping the sophisticated look would make her an easier cast for Hollywood movies of the time, she was dubbed with the nickname "Black Dahlia." The story was all over the press, mainly because such horrific events rarely occurred during that time. The press ate it up and kept it on their front pages for six straight weeks. Needless to say, the L.A. police were under great pressure to solve the case. In reality, the case remains unsolved, but Ellroy did solve it in his novel. Ellroy's strange obsession with this case and with detective novels in general ever since boyhood is likely the result of his mother's murder. When Ellroy was 10, his mother was found strangled to death in the bushes new the local high school. The case was never solved.

Kiddies, anyone who thinks they can design a cover for james ellroy with ‘quiet type’ is DREAMING. Wake up! He’s the most raucous writer on the planet!

Designer: Chip Kidd title: Blood on the Moon author: James Ellroy publisher: Vintage available at Amazon.com Not to dismiss Chip Kidd’s design on these, but the hero of this three cover series is the photographer. Thomas Allen works with old books (usually pulp covers) and converts them into cleverly structured dioramas. I really can’t express how awesome I find these. I’d like to see him take a stab at old pulp scifi novels. Dig it, Bookworms - Better get your summer reading done before the next round of suicide bombers comes in and you waste another six months watching CNN twenty four hours a day. And what contemporary author goes down nice and smooth with rampant conspiracy theories better than James Ellroy ? "Tom Clancy"? Who said that? Get that old guy some Maalox and get him the hell outta here! James Ellroy is THE Two Fisted Tough Guy Novelist for these paranoid times and . . . Hey, look out the window and make sure that old dude isn't waiting for me out in the parking lot with a baseball bat. As a young man Ellroy was what my Mom and Dad used to call "a bum". Now they call em "like John". He took a lot of drugs, lived on a one hundred percent pure beef diet with the steaks he would shoplift out of supermarkets, hung around in public libraries, slept in the park, and walked around with cotton stuffed in his ears to stop The Voices (But this was when The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Randy Newman were just starting out so LA was full of people walking around with cotton stuffed in their ears) - Clearly a futile effort to get his Mother off of his mind and we can all relate to that. But there is no escape! Send the Old Lady some flowers and give her a call cause even if she gets murdered and you take all the drugs in the world she will still track you down and ruin your day.

'Dead Women Owned Me' ~ Survival, Guilt, and James Ellroy NEDDAL AYAD, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador A cheap Saturday night took you down. You died stupidly and harshly and without the means to hold your own life dear She was wearing a scoop-front, sleeveless, light and dark blue dress. A dark blue overcoat with a matching lining was spread over her lower body. Her feet and ankles were visible. Her right foot was bare. A nylon stocking was bunched up around her left ankle. and He examined the body and made the following observations: She was not wearing a slip, a girdle or panties. Her dress was pushed up above her hips. No panties and no shoes. That one stocking down her left ankle. Bruises and small lacerations on the insides of her thighs. An asphalt drag mark on her left hip. The detectives searched the immediate area. They did not find any of the missing articles of clothing. They could not locate any tire marks or drag marks. The ivy around the body did not appear to be trampled. A dispatch was made to the local radio stations: According to Mrs. Krycki, Jean Ellroy was a registered nurse. She had been divorced for several years. She lived with her son in a small bungalow that she rented from Mrs. Krycki and her husband. She and her ten-year-old son had been living there for approximately four months. The son spent weekdays with his mother and weekends with his father. The boy was with his father at the moment. She had spoken to Jean briefly Saturday night, but she did not discuss her plans for the evening. She stated that she had seen Jean drive off in her car, alone, at approximately 8:00 pm Saturday night. As far as she knew Jean was a private woman who did not have much of a social life. She kept men and alcohol to a minimum.

By Title By Category Amazon.com by Patrick Quinn Kansas City Star My Dark Places Wearing one of his trademark pineapple shirts, legs spread as if to brace himself for a physical struggle, Ellroy introduced himself with a stream of gaudy profanities and taboo sexual images in doggerel. Addressing his audience as "Hep cats," he howled like a coyote, frowned with menace and gestured dramatically. "These books are incendiary," he said reciting a list of his titles. "These books can cure AIDS and cancer. If you buy five copies of my books, you will be able to have unlimited sex with each and every person on this planet you choose every night of your life." He identified Barko, the hound in his familiar publicity photos, as the true author of his works, as well as the paramour of various celebrities and the assassin of John F. Kennedy,… Gurley went on to suggest the reading may have been "the most unusual event in Writer’s Place history," which says more about the venue than the performer. Dog was doing his old tricks that day. His shtick is well-known in the book world. Readers seem to like it because it furthers the notion that Ellroy’s dark, often horrific novels are the product of a dark and horrific person; many readers leave his readings with the feeling they’ve brushed against the Beast in the flesh. Publishers like it because it sells books – a lot of books. Dog likes it because he likes to bark, often literally. His phone messages usually end with "Woof-woof, Daddy-o."

Have Comments? M ade in 1993 with the help of grants from the Austrian Department of Education and Art, and the County of Upper Austria, this film received limited theatrical release in the U.S. five years later and subsequent video sales due to the popularity of the 1997 Hollywood release of "L.A. Confidential"—which not only made up-and-comers of stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, but brought the man whose books inspired it to a deservedly larger circle of readers. James Ellroy updated the classic Raymond Chandler noir in the 1980s, first with a collection of thrillers about cops and serial killers (and serial killer cops!), then through a series of four related novels set in Los Angeles between 1947 and 1959, and informally known as "the LA quartet": The Black Dahlia The Big Nowhere LA Confidential , and White Jazz . Dark, gritty, violent, profane, and bewilderingly complicated, the books "are about obsession," Ellroy says. "I want to put as much densely packed social history into a series of novels as the farthest reaches of my brain and soul can encompass."

Interview by DEBORAH SOLOMON Published: November 5, 2006 I see you’ll be the host of the first episode of te new Court TV series “Murder by the Book,” in which you explore a singularly distressing unsolved case – your mother’s homicide, which occurred when you were 10. What led you to return to the subject now? Skip to next paragraph Justin Stephens for The New York Times James Ellroy. If I could abolish one concept from the parlance, it would be closure. My mother and I continue. The force of her — the pure, feminine, complex, ambiguous, bereaved force of her — drives me to this day. It has been a decade since you recounted the story of her murder in “My Dark Places.” But she seems to haunt your other novels as well, including your current trilogy in progress on the pre-Reagan American underworld. What I like about the era I am writing about, meaning 1958 to 1972, is that the anti-Communism mandate justified virtually any kind of clandestine activity. I like exploring the mind-set of extreme expediency.

Ellroy Confidential
A conversation with the Demon Dog of American letters.
I n a ceremony held recently in Los Angeles, novelist James Ellroy was presented with the Los Angeles Police Historical Society's Jack Webb Award. Ellroy is the author of 16 books, including such bestsellers as The Cold Six Thousand American Tabloid , and L.A. Confidential . A film adaptation of his novel The Black Dahlia , directed by Brian De Palma, will be released in 2006. Ellroy recently spoke with NRO's Jack Dunphy about crime, cops, and conservatism. Jack Dunphy: What is the Jack Webb Award?
James Ellroy: Jack Webb was of course the creator of the Dragnet television show and the television auteur of the 1950s. It was a felicitous meeting between Jack Webb and [then LAPD chief] William Parker that made Parker believe Webb could be exploited to put forth a positive image of the LAPD. Except for Parker himself, Jack Webb was the man most responsible for bringing this positive image to the world at large. The LAPD Historical Society honors civilians, often in the arts, sometimes in politics, who have served to advance the gloriously deserved positive image of the Los Angeles Police Department. As a writer heavily influenced by Jack Webb, particularly his 1958 book The Badge , which turned my life around, I'm honored to be one of this year's honorees.
