American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Ralph Waldo Ellison (1914-1994)
Index Ralph Ellison was a midwesterner, born in Oklahoma, who studied at Tuskegee Institute in the southern United States. He had one of the strangest careers in American letters consisting of one highly acclaimed book, and nothing more. The novel is Invisible Man (1952), the story of a black man who lives a subterranean existence in a hole brightly illuminated by electricity stolen from a utility company. The book recounts his grotesque, disenchanting experiences. When he wins a scholarship to a black college, he is humiliated by whites; when he gets to the college, he witnesses the black president spurning black American concerns. Life is corrupt outside college, too. For example, even religion is no consolation: A preacher turns out to be a criminal. The novel indicts society for failing to provide its citizens black and white with viable ideals and institutions for realizing them. It embodies a powerful racial theme because the "invisible man" is invisible not in himself but because others, blinded by prejudice, cannot see him for who he is.. Index

"Ralph Ellison: A Biography"
Book Review
"...with the music of Bach playing softly, and with Fanny snuggled tightly against Ralph on the hospital bed, Callahan saw a single tear roll slowly down his cheek. Then he was gone."
"Ralph Ellison" quickly caught my eye on the shelf in the Library's "New Book" section. Picking it up, I discovered "A Biography" in small print. I picture Mr. Ellison looking down from heaven today at Jena, Louisiana with that single tear rolling down his cheek, shrugging his shoulder, turning to walk away sadly shaking his head. "Ralph Ellison: A Biography" published in 2007 by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House, Inc. written by Arnold Rampersad, is in a word: thorough. Writing this book was obviously a labor of love to Mr. Rampersad.
The very thoroughness of the book made it a labor for me to read. This is not a book you want to borrow from the library; this is the kind of book you want to buy for your home library, to read slowly over a period of time. "Ralph Ellison: A Biography" is more than a biography; it is a lesson in history of 1900s United States of America. There is a dispute of Mr. Ellison's

Ralph Ellison won the National Book Award for his first novel Invisible Man (1952), the story of an alienated and isolated black man living in racially repressive urban America. Ellison grew up in Oklahoma and aimed for a career in jazz music. Instead he moved to New York City in 1936 and turned to writing, encouraged by other African-American writers including Langston Hughes and Ralph Wright. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marines and published short stories. The remarkable success of Invisible Man made Ellison famous worldwide and he was suddenly considered one of America's most important writers. Reluctant to assume the role of a representative for his race, Ellison always maintained that in writing his book he was pursuing art more than he was pursuing racial justice. Although he lectured and published collections of essays ( Shadow and Act in 1964 and Going to the Territory in 1986), he worked for forty years on a second novel without finishing it. His literary executor and friend, John Callahan, put together the manuscript after Ellison died and the novel was published as
