METH: Did you have Jewish role models who were tough Jews, because in the 1930s it would have been guys like Bugsy Siegel and Dutch Schultz representing that image.

METH: So you thought Jews were a bunch of wimps. ELLISON: METH: (laughing) ELLISON: So, are you ready? METH: Go. ELLISON: kike were anything , they believed that Jews had horns and killed Christian babies to make their matzos. Now, you hear people sometimes talking about this, and they say it as a gag. Ellison's suit had alleged that AOL allowed unauthorized distribution of his writings. The settlement was quietly announced earlier this week. The parties did not release the sum of the settlement. Ellison originally claimed AOL was responsible for the appearance of his works on Usenet newsgroups, which were accessible through Internet service. A judge in 2002 said , but the ruling was partially reversed by an appeals court earlier this year. TalkBack E-mail Print del.icio.us

Back in 1994, Ellison spent a day at The Booksmith writing in our store window. Prompted by comedian Robin Williams, Ellison spent his time here alternately being inspired, writing, and talking with customers. At the end of the day, Ellison read his newly completed story, "The Byte that Bites" (now called "Keyboard"), before an enthuiastic audience numbering in the hundreds. Ellison's latest book, Slippage , contains the short story he wrote at our store in 1994. FICTION

73. Harlan Ellison: Deathbird Stories. A Book Review By Jpoc.
A jpoc science fiction book review of harlan ellison Deathbird Stories.
http://www.jpoc.net/books/sf/e/00/ellison-harlan/deathbird.html
Harlan Ellison: Deathbird Stories
This collection groups nineteen of Ellison's stories dealing with subjects such as gods spirits and suchlike. In former times, people created numerous gods and spirits for just about every aspect of their lives. Gods for thunder the moon and the sea. Spirits and Ghosts living in caves, rivers etc. What if we still felt the need to invent and invoke such gods and spirits today? What would they be like? A god for machines? A spirit in a slot machine? A demon ruling over violent crime? These are the subjects that Ellison deals with in this collection of stories.
The book straddles the boundaries between science fiction, fantasy and horror and as such it will not satisfy SF purists but it does contain a number of very powerful stories. The opening tale, "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" is a shocking and worrying take on the cruelty of city violence. It is followed by "Along the Scenic Route" in which modern day knights in armour fight their jousts to the death on the public highway. Those two, along with "Ernest and the MachineGod", "Basilisk" and "Deathbird" are my favourites but they are not the only stories to leap off the page and grab hold of your imagination. There are some weaker tales here too but they are outnumbered by the good ones.
I'd not recommend this as an introduction to Ellison. The anthology "The Essential Ellison" fills that role perfectly but, if you read and enjoyed that, you will like this book. If you like this book, I'd recommend Ellen Datlow's themed anthology

My Night With Harlan Ellison, Part II
Part I
Please read my blog entries at my Web site:
http://www.dpsinfo.com/blog

I wound up directing Harlan and Susan Ellison to the far side of the stage. They were a little more out-of-the-way than they should have been. From here on out, Harlan was alternately snippy and not so snippy (I don't want to accuse him of being apologetic, because he never went that far, but...maybe it was apologetic for him!). At first he seemed upset with his seat (just past the Hugo nomination area), but then he said everything was fine. Then he went to complain to people he knew in the audience about his seats...
I stopped back and checked in with Kathryn, the backstage crew and the presenters. They were discussing how to keep Harlan onstage after presenting the Short Story Hugo. It turned out, he was getting a special committee award. "Um, I just got them seated off to one side...um...maybe I ought to do it."

A Firebrand at 69: An Interview with Harlan Ellison by Robert W. Bly The Washington Post Writer's Digest (WD): When we first met in 1979, you were 45. Now you're 69. How are things different, as far as the writer is concerned, today versus back then? Harlan Ellison (bemused): Ah, "back then." Way "back then" in the Mesozoic, right? Kiddo, it's not even twenty-five years. But that's part of the problem for writers, for establishing a career. Cultural amnesia due to television and the Internet. But, to answer your question directly, in terms of money, condition of work, and approbation, worse. Life is a lot harder for writers now. WD: Well, do you directly blame it on the internet? HE: Oh, I guess in substantial measure, I do. The slovenliness of thinking on the web. There is a culture of belief today that everything should be free. The internet is the glaring promoter of such slacker-gen "philosophy," and that goes to the core of my lawsuit. People have been gulled into believing that everything should be free, and that if a professional gets published, well, any thief can steal it, and post it, and the thug feels abused if you whack him for it. Meanwhile, vast hordes of semi- or untalented amateurs festoon the Internet with their ungrammatical, puerile trash, and they think because this "vanity" publication gets seen by a few people, that they are "writers." Horse puckey!
