It was well-run. It was a lot of fun. It went by in a flash. The Hugos were of course enormously satisfying to both tnh and me. The programming we were on was good. We're very grateful to the committee for moving the blogging panelthe one we shared with Kevin Drum, Cory Doctorow, Phil Plait, and MaryAnn Johansonto a time slot where we didn't have a previous commitment.
That said, here are some notes about the not-so-great which I'd like to get down before memory fades.
(1) I'm acutely aware of the extent to which no Worldcon can possibly use every SF professional who wants to be on the program, and I'm equally aware of the way that every modern Worldcon gets slagged off by prosusually minor proswho think they ought to have been granted more appearances before what they fondly imagine to be their adoring public. My usual advice to such complainers is to stop being ridiculous; the World Science Fiction Convention is a service organization for science fiction fandom, not your personal publicity agency. That said, however, it's appalling to read that David Marusek was told they had no use for him on the program. Come on. Knowing about contemporary SF isn't some kind of optional "special interest." If you have nobody on your committee who has a clue who the interesting and major upcoming SF and fantasy writers are, you should be letting someone else run the Worldcon.

Home Harlan Ellison Profiled in Documentary From Jewish Journal ...the celebrated writer is the subject of a new documentary, "Dreams With Sharp Teeth," the title taken from a three-volume collection of Ellison's stories. The documentary by Erik Nelson traces Ellison's life from his tumultuous childhood in Painesville, Ohio, where Ellison lived as "a Jew in a world where there were no Jews." Ellison's Jewish heritage made him a favorite target of physical and verbal abuse by the local bullies. He retaliated years later by naming the villains in his story after his childhood nemeses. "What gets you passionate and angry enough to write are the hurtful memories," he told Tom Snyder during a 1974 television appearance. Share: John Books Comments

Ellison v. Robertson, et al. This page is intended only to provide a basic understanding of the case and selected documents and rulings. (Due to a protective order, not all documents can be made available.) In early spring of 2000, famous author Harlan Ellison ) prevents Mr. Ellison from obtaining any effective relief for any liability it might otherwise have. On 10 February 2004, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed in part and remanded the case. It will now go back for trial on contributory infringement and the reasonability of AOL's DMCA policies, unless someone tries to continue the appeal process (which is not, at this writing, known). On 08 June 2004, Mr. Ellison and AOL announced a settlement of this dispute. The joint press release is as follows: Ellison sued AOL in April 2000 over concerns that unauthorized copies of his and the works of other authors were being distributed through the USENET newsgroup alt.binaries.e-book, which, at that time, could be accessed through AOL's and others' services. AOL blocked its users' access to the alt.binaries.e-book newsgroup immediately after Ellison filed his lawsuit. Last Updated: 08 June 2004

Because the thing’s been kept so tightly under wraps, every rumor site on the planet is scrambling to be the first to get the real deal on the plot of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek . There’s no shortage of rumors, but so far no confirmations.
The latest bunch of plot rumors come from IESB , where their scooper is basically recycling some of the other rumors we’ve heard about the film, but with a few more interesting specifics. Stop reading if you want to avoid any and all spoilers.
They claim, as have so many others, that the movie will revolve around time travel. What’s surprising is that IESB says the movie isn’t really a prequel, but is instead set in the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Apparently TNG era Spock must stop a plot by the Romulans to kill James T. Kirk before he becomes Captain of the Enterprise, and to do it enlists the help of his past self using the Guardian of Forever.
This is the first mention we’ve heard of the Guardian being used in the film as their time travel device. In case you’re a little fuzzy on it, The Guardian of Forever was a sentient time travel machine featured in the award winning original series episode called "City on the Edge of Forever". It’s the one in which Kirk goes back in time, falls in love with Edith Keeler, and then must watch her die in order to avoid screwing up the timeline. If you’ve ever seen a list of the best

Hi Wendy, We all could help change this mentality if each of us asked for what we deserve. Negotiate our contracts. Ask for raises when we're due. The problem and I'm guilty of this is this business is so hard sometimes that there are times when we're so happy just to get a sale that we don't think to negotiate the pay rate. Hope you're having a good day, Wendy. Amy 3:09 PM

Hi Amy and Michelle, Thanks for stopping by. It's so hard to take a stand on principle (as I found out this summer with SPJ), but I think this world would be a better place if more people did just that. I love this guy because of his passion about professionalism for writers. I've been singing that tune a long time. 8:07 AM

Problem is, no one bothered to tell (or pay) Ellison.
The AICN report might just be a rumor, but as CHUD reports it's a rumor Ellison is taking seriously enough to issue a few typically cantankerous threats via his website. Read on:
Would someone go to that site, and suggest to those people there, that "City" and all its elements EXCEPT specific Star Trek characters, belong to Harlan Ellison author of that much-lauded episode by terms of the Separation of Rights clause of the Writers Guild's Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), and if Mr. Abrams with whom I'm currently on strike or anyone else, at Paramount or elsewhere, thinks they're going to use MY creationswhether the City, the Guardians, Sister Edith Keeler, or any other elements CREATED BY HARLAN ELLISON...they had damned well better lose the unilateral arrogance, get in touch with me, or my agent, Marty Shapiro, and be prepared to pay for the privilege of mining the lode I own.
