Harlan Ellison: How Writers Get Screwed

Now that the Writers Guild strike is here, thanks to the corporate fucks who try to screw writers any way they conceivably can, it's nice to get further perspective on what the pressing issues are. A friend in "the industry" recently sent me this video of veteran scribe Harlan Ellison addressing the problem, and the man, while impassioned and angry, really nails it. I mean, would you work for free? More specifically, would you allow your work to enrich those who steal from you?

Episode: TOS 028 - The City on the Edge of Forever
Biography courtesy of HarlanEllison.com Born: Cleveland, Ohio. 1934. HARLAN ELLISON has been called "one of the great living American short story writers" by the Washington Post; and the Los Angeles Times said, "It's long past time for Harlan Ellison to be awarded the title: 20th Century Lewis Carroll." L.A. Weekly, titled "An Edge in My Voice," in defense of the First Amendment). After writing the columns for only 29 weeks, he beat out candidates from the L.A. Times, the N.Y. Times, and the Washington Post.

Letter on Clark Ashton Smith
Harlan Ellison
It is seldom a writer is able to cast back through memory to locate the specific stories that influenced him in his work. Who can remember that this particular image was fostered by Conrad or that specific syntax was employed by C©line? But in one isolated instance of my own professional career, my impetus remains as bright and compelling as it was the day I removed it from a library shelf in a high school in Cleveland, Ohio and passed — incredibly! — out of that building through a portal to the City where the Singing Flame lived. I had been writing, the way a teen-ager writes, for many years, but no genre had captured my imagination. I had read literally Annapurnas of comic books, suspense pulps and minor adventure classics of the Lorna Doone ilk, yet none of them seemed to fill me with the immensity of subject that my own wild ideas needed. In my youthful impatience, even the classics seemed stunted and too much filled with self-exploration. Few writers cared to soar outward, most sought to detail the configurations of their own nitty navels. I was hungry for something new and vital. And I found it in an August Derleth anthology

Bubba on October 17th, 2006 1:03 pm Ray Palmer, undeserving target of Harlan Ellison’s meanness for many years, is laughing somewhere. Ellison has largely made himself a pseudo-celebrity by his outrageous actions. As many older writers and fans remember (but do they DARE to speak?) Ellison intentionally recruited fans to harass and ridicule an aging and already crippled Palmer at SCIFI Conventions in the 60s and early 70s (cornering him in an elevator and causing him to fall and hurt himself, in one instance), intentionally distorted and took out of context what the man said, and did everything he could to ruin him. Palmer, of course, was the one-time editor of Amazing Stories who started the whole “Shaver Mystery” rolling. In addition to being a legendary force in early scifi and fantasy publishing, he was a kind-hearted gent who loved the fans and also committed the Harlan-ordained ’sin’ of having an interest in exploring the paranormal, UFOs, and other strange phenomena. Despicable, but everyone pretends not to remember, and kisses his ass.

His voice carries well, and it has to: The Ellison residence, once a simple tract house in the hills overlooking the San Fernando Valley, has over the years rambled up and out. many other strange and marvelous things, dozens of framed movie posters ("Die Monster Die," "The Brides of Fu Manchu," "The Mummy"), hundreds of classic cartoon-and comic-strip-character juice glasses (a small room off the kitchen is devoted to them), at least that many pipes, a pool table somewhere beneath neat stacks of magazines, a skittles table (Ellison demonstrates the game with glee) and enough geegaws (e.g., Goofy figurines) to populate a one-tenth scale theme park.

Claim: During his first day as a writer for Disney Studios, Harlan Ellison was fired for jokingly suggesting a "porn Disney flick" be made.
    Status: True.
    Origins:
A few hours after arriving for his first day of work at Disney Studios, Ellison and several fellow writers headed off to the studio commissary for lunch. Once there, Ellison jokingly suggested they "do a Disney porn flick" and proceeded to act out the parts while imitating the voices of several animated Disney characters. Unbeknownst to him, Roy Disney and the other studio heads were sitting adjacent to his table. Ellison claims that he returned to his office to find a pink slip on his desk and the name on his parking space whited out. He recounted this incident in his book Stalking the Nightmare, as part 3 of a section entitled "The 3 Most Important Things in Life."

    Why Harlan Ellison is Essential
By Scott Edelman arlan Ellison's professional writing career was born in 1955, and coincidentally, so was I. We are the same age, that unparalleled career and I (and I hesitate to admit that at this point, his career is in much better shape than I am). I bring up this bit of synchronicity not to make Harlan feel old, but just to toss out one more possible explanation (I have tossed out many others over the years) for why I feel so closely attached to the man and his oeuvre . While Harlan was in Lester and Evelyn del Rey's kitchen slaving away during that pivotal year of 1955 at "Glowworm"which critic James Blish once called "the single worst story ever published in the field of science fiction"I was engaged in a more literal act of creation. No wonder I feel such a spiritual relationship to the manas my life was just beginning, the most important part of Harlan's life was also just beginning. In fact, he seemed to be there whenever I entered into a new world. When I first entered the world of SF, he was there, his passionate storieschallenging editors, readers and, with their experiments, sometimes typesettersscattered among the magazines of the day. The life-affirming passion of his prose was irresistible. It is said that the Golden Age of Science Fiction is 12. Well, I was 12 when the Ellison-edited
