Profiled by Galen Strickland Harlan Ellison is a writer. Period. One of the finest of his generation in my opinion. Even though he has written speculative fiction, including science fiction and fantasy, he has long fought the conventional tradition of labeling writers and categorizing them, so I will not make that mistake. At one time he actually went so far as to say, "Call me a science fiction writer and I will come to your house and nail your dog's head to the coffee table!" (This was in his first commentary on the old Sci-Fi Buzz TV show.) Photo by Jill Bauman (I suppose the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America weren't listening, because they have honored Harlan with the most recent Nebula Grand Master Award.) It is this type of audacity and abrasiveness that has alienated many readers who otherwise would probably appreciate his work. I hope to show that most of Harlan's attitude is justified - or at least understandable - and that it is just such a stance which makes him one of the most exemplary spokesmen for the downtrodden writers of all genres. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934, he lived mostly in Painesville until shortly after his father died in 1949, then he and his mother moved back to Cleveland. A few years earlier he had run away from home and for a short time worked with a traveling carnival. In Cleveland, he became very active in SF fandom, publishing his own fanzine -

Harlan Ellison
(born 27 May ; age 73) is an extremely prolific American author. Although he has written much that would be called science fiction, he disdains the use of that term. Considered one of the giants of the field by both fans and professionals, his body of work has touched movies, television shows, computer games, and of course that most venerable of media, books. Ellison does not suffer fools at all, much less gladly, and feuds have arisen over his mistreatment (perceived and real) at the hands of those for whom he has worked. The most famous of these is probably his feud with Gene Roddenberry , who Ellison believed ruined the story that became " The City on the Edge of Forever ", arguably the most famous original series episode. Roddenberry added insult to injury by refusing to change the screen credit to "Cordwainer Bird", a nom de plume comparable to the venerable "Alan Smithee"; Ellison uses the Bird alias to signal works he feels have been impossibly compromised by others. On top of that refusal, Roddenberry claimed credit for saving the story for years. The pseudonym "Cordwainer Bird" (sometimes spelled Cord Wainer Bird), first used by Ellison in the late 1950s for his "soft core" pornographic fiction, was also used on at least three occasions for various television episodes he wrote, but disowned due to rewrites. "Cordwainer" comes from Ellison's admiration for science fiction writer Cordwainer Smith; "Bird" is from the dismissive euphemism "for the birds," as well as "flipping the bird," the extension of the middle finger in the direction of someone or something that displeases. He once worked as a writer for disney untill he got fired.

Harlan Ellison is my hero!
How refreshing to hear a writer tell it exactly the way it is. If you haven't seen this on You Tube, follow the link. If you're easily offended, overlook some of the language.
Harlan is so right. Especially about people who want your writing for free, or the nearest thing to free.
As someone who freelances, I see this "compensated by recognition" as an escalating problem. Every day I see jobs posted where clients want 50 articles for a buck a pop. You've got to be kidding me! The amateurs who eagerly land those jobs don't realize they're getting screwed, and, in the process, they're screwing every pro out there by creating a low-paying environment for writers.
Sure, it exists in the book publishing industry too for those without agents. Get a good agent and then what you get depends on the negotiating power of your agent.
I guess it's just a surprise that someone of Harlan's stature is subjected to the same thing.
I won't take penny-ante jobs as my dad would call them. In fact, I turn down about three jobs offered to me every day. Why? I won't work for peanuts though due to my own perfectionism, I sometimes feel like that's what I end up with, but that's another story.

    http://www.penny-arcade.com/2005/09/26
Unique Gifts For The Home Mon, September 26 2005 - 04:30 AM by: Tycho Just as a kind of exercise, the SkyMall catalogue is something we've used to keep our minds off the realities of flight for years. The strip we did awhile back about a machine which would repel either dogs or witches (but never both) was born of this odd, airborne magazine, and when we got off the plane from Hotlanta (which I have heard Ludacris refer to as "The ATL") we just tossed it in the laptop bag. I've beaten Indigo Prophecy now, I have a couple endings under my belt, and on the whole the game is something I can recommend without discomfort. I know people who have obtained an overseas version because they can't do without the interactive sex scenes that were flensed from our localized offering. I'm okay without it. I don't have faith that I could make such a scene endure for longer than a couple minutes, anyway. I don't need to haul that kind of anxiety into the digital realm. Short of two very specific "stealth" scenes which feature "gameplay" that is far, far outside the charter described by the rest of the experience, and indeed may be far outside the developer's ability to execute it, there's a lot of what one might call juice in this game. Unfortunately, the storytelling near the end is terribly abrupt, which is only brought into greater relief against the sure-footed delivery of the earlier chapters. The writing could have been tighter in places, and tense scenes are sometimes made frustrating when the camera angle shifts but the controls don't follow.

Perhaps best known for his works of speculative fiction, which include the classic Dangerous Visions anthologies he conceived of and edited, he has won the Hugo award eight-and-a-half times, the Nebula award three times, the Bram Stoker award five times and the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award. You've been involved with science fiction in some form or fashion for more than five decades, and over the years have written some of that genre's most influential works. Witte © 2004 Writing may be a solitary profession, but it’s tough to find Harlan Ellison without an audience. Whether his listeners are a small gathering of friends at lunch or hundreds of fans crowded into an auditorium, the 70-year-old author always has a point to make and a story to tell. “The meaning of life is that it’s the only game in town. As onerous as it becomes, it is, as Maurice Chevalier said, ‘Better than the alternative,’” Ellison said in a 1998 interview. “My personal philosophy is that anything that isn’t nailed down is mine, and anything I can pry loose isn’t nailed down.” At an age where many people step down from their careers to retire, the silver-haired Ellison seems to have more zest for life than a teenager. Not to mention more rebellion and willingness to fight than your average revolutionary.
