23. Time Out Of Time - School Of The Seasons
Many years ago, after reading an article by normandi ellis about Egyptian New Year magic, ellis, normandi, “New Year Magic,” SageWoman, Samhain 9991
http://www.schooloftheseasons.com/timeout.html
In Babylon, the 12 intercalary days between the Winter Solstice and the New Year were seen as the time of a struggle between chaos and order, with chaos trying to take back over the world. Other cultures (Hindu, Chinese, Celtic) also viewed this as a time for reversing order and rules. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia from December 17 through December 24, an eight-day festival when social roles were reversed. No one was allowed to work but expected to gamble and feast instead. Hanukkah is another eight-day feast celebrated at this same time period. No one is supposed to work during the half hour each evening when the Hanukkah candles are lit, but in some traditions, women are not allowed to work at all during the eight days of Hanukkah. Playful gambling (with the dreidl) is also a part of Hanukkah traditions. And in Mexico, the Posadas, the processions re enacting the search of Joseph and Mary for shelter, take place during the eight days before Christmas.
Helen Farias suggests that the 12 days were originally 13 nights, celebrated from the dark moon nearest the solstice through the next full moon (Jan 1, New Year's Day). Greek women celebrated a Dionysian ritual on the full moon nearest the Winter Solstice. The Greeks told a story about the halcyon days, the two week period before and after the solstice when the kingfisher built her nest on the waves and the sea was calm while she hatched her chicks.

24. Sekhmet

Sekhmet is the lion-headed solar goddess of the Egyptian pantheon, and the Crone aspect of the trinity of Hathor-Bast-Sekhmet. She is also part of the Triad of Memphis, along with the god, and her consort, and their son Nefer-Tem. Ptah is often called the Creator God, and their son Nefer-Tem is known as the God of Medicine. Ra, the Sun God, was her father.
It is widely believed that Sekhmet herself is a much more ancient deity, and in fact, Sekhmet is much older than Ra. It is told that she “came to Egypt from a place unknown and a time unrecorded” (Masters) as shown by some of her titles:
Lady of the Place at the Beginning of Time
One Who Was Before the Gods Were
Mother of All the Gods
Metropolitan Museum of Art The name Sekhmet comes from Sekhem ,which means strong, mighty, powerful, and violent. She is a solar goddess, directly related to the creative and destructive powers of the sun. The Mythology of Sekhmet Sekhmet has something of a bad reputation, stemming largely from a single myth, and as a result, is almost always described in a negative, violent, and overly simplistic way. The myth she is most known for is this:

The Recurring World Tree in European Paganism
article
by Mark Dalton
It was one of those spring days... I was 19 years old, and I was sitting by myself with my back against a magnificent, 80-foot-tall, 100-year-old oak tree on the grounds of Love Library at the University of Nebraska. The sky was a bright, vibrant blue, with fluffy white clouds drifting by above the towering trees overhead. It had been a long, cold winter, but today I was dappled in warm, golden sunshine, and there I sat, delighted and transfixed, while nature spirits danced and played through the trees, sighing with pleasure as they brushed across the grass, spun around the corners of the massive old library and whispered through the delicate new leaves in the branches far above me. Trees have been an important part of pagan worship and magical workings since our distant ancestors began leaving evidence of possessing a spiritual consciousness. As Ralph Metzner, a professor of psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, notes, the two most widespread world images in the archaic imagination were the mother goddess and the "world tree." Along with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (now known as Ram Dass), Metzner was an early pioneer in the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness. He has written several important books on Western consciousness and spirituality, including The Well of RemembranceRediscovering the Earth Wisdom Myths of Northern Europe

By Emory Taylor A note about quotes.

So this quote reference indicates the the quote can be found at page 23, paragraph 4, sentences 7-9 of an indicated book. Egyptologists have developed theories about ancient Egyptian civilization. Often, some people forget, or do not realize, that much of what we read about ancient Egypt is, in fact, theory. Any Egyptologist, or archaeologist, will tell you that much of what we know about ancient Egypt is theory. Religion In Ancient Egypt - Shafer
xi/1/1-2 "Egyptology is a dynamic field. Ongoing archaeological and epigraphically investigations continuously produce fresh data, some of which point the way to reformulation of previously held hypotheses about ancient Egyptian life, thought, and history." These theories are not just based on the evidence (artifacts) because the evidence (artifacts) must be interpreted: the basis of these theories is the interpretation of the artifacts. How the evidence is interpreted is of great importance. The evidence is not always interpreted the same way by different individuals, which gives rise to competing theories, even within the field of Egyptology. Much of what we...know...about ancient Egypt is based on hieroglyphic writing, that is based on interpretations of the hieroglyphic writing.

    http://www.personal.usyd.edu.au/~apert/osiris.html
Extracts from Awakening Osiris : a new translation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead by Normandi Ellis (Phanes Press, 1988) Introduction (in part) "Osiris, the god of the dead, is a green god, an image of the seed waiting in the dark to burst forth into renewal. His symbol was the growing corn. His death and rebirth illuminated the path from darkness to light, from unconsciousness to enlightenment. In that light, I called this book Awakening Osiris for I thought of it as a call to consciousness and spiritual awakening. We are all Osirises. "The Book of the Dead is a misnomer applied by historians to a text which the ancient Egyptians referred to as the Book of Coming Forth by Day.I much prefer the Egyptian title as it seems best to represent what the book implies. No definitive version of the Book of the Dead exists.Rather it is a compilation of funerary texts and religious hymns written by priests and copied by scribes during a period spanning approximately 3000BC to 300AD.(p.15) "I took Pound at his word and tried to "make it new."I wanted to once again offer it up as a celebration of the beauty and terror of life. The awe of awakening to a new day, or perhaps a new self. The wisdom of the ancients seems eternal, yet we are all people affecting our changes. The work of a lifetime is the process of returning to light and life.So it seemed right to blow a little dust off the old Egyptian book and let it shine anew in a more modern era."(p.25) Special note about the ancient wisdom

    AWAKENING OSIRIS
The Egyptian Book of the Dead
    Translated by NORMANDI ELLIS
Phanes Press 1988 (PO Box 6114, Grand Rapids, MI 49516, USA)
This literary gem is much, much more than a "new and improved" translation of the Coffin Texts, or The Going Forth By Day (Egyptian Book of the Dead). It is a mystic and poetic interpretation of great personal depth and collective application. Even the Author's brief introduction to the book reveals a wealth of historical and spiritual understanding: Osiris, the god of the dead, is a green god, an image of the seed waiting
in the dark to burst forth into renewal. His symbol was the growing corn.
His death and rebirth illuminated the path from darkness
to light, from unconsciousness to enlightenment. In that light, I called this book
AWAKENING OSIRIS for I thought of it as a call to consciousness and spiritual awakening.
We are all Osirises. [P. 15] The hieroglyphic source and meaning of the original text continues to create controversy among scholars, anthropologists, and New Age believers. Theories include suggestions that the texts are examples of primitive animism and superstition; were inspired by extraterrestrial intelligences; or reflect corrupted gleanings from a "higher" civilization, possibly Atlantean. The Gnostic Pagan Tradition views the intriguing, often bizarre images of the texts, to be transmissions of direct knowledge (gnosis) and communication with daemonic, or allegorical realitythe interconnected flip side of mundane, or biological reality.
