Book Notes - Bret Easton Ellis ("Lunar Park")
Bret Easton Ellis is an author who needs little introduction. For the past twenty years he has fascinated, impressed, and sometimes scared his readers with fine-tuned skill. His latest novel, Lunar Park , features himself as a character, fighting psychological and supernatural powers while defending his family. Lunar Park is hands-down my favorite novel of the year. The book's website contains an excerpt, an interview with the author, and even a game. Bret Easton Ellis was kind enough to send along a list of music that influenced the book, a "list of songs and CD's that were in my head when writing the book." Many of these tracks are mentioned in the book as well. "Fly Me to the Moon"Frank Sinatra "Late For the Sky"Jackson Browne "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"Elton John "Someone Saved My Life Tonight"Elton John "Life in the Fast Lane"Eagles "Life's Been Good To Me"Joe Walsh "Everyday I Write The Book"Elvis Costello "Witchy Woman"Eagles "Thriller"Michael Jackson "Haunted"Poe

Self-congratulating frat-boy authors of the 21st century are not quite so vital a target of satire as the odious New York corporate boys of the 80s however, and while the razor runs sharp, the book would wear thin pretty quickly if this was all it aspired to.

Ambiguity can be the most vibrant life-blood of art, and Ellis keeps us guessing from here to infernal eternity. There is no resolution here, no redemption. For all the archness, this seems a real cry from the depths of a flinching soul.

Bret easton ellis: american legend
Though his career is most often associated with the controversy surrounding American Psycho, there's more to this writer than murder and Wall Street.
Born in 1964 in Los Angeles, California, Bret Easton Ellis was just a junior at Bennington College in Vermont when his first book, Less Than Zero, was published by Penguin Publishing. In fact, it was because of his student status that the book came to be, as the rough draft of the book was originally written for a tutorial that he was taking. Spotting Ellis’ talent, the professor realized that, though it needed some work, the story of a group of ultra-bored and ultra-rich kids living in Beverly Hills was certainly a marketable tale. Working with Ellis to help him hone his craft, that same professor eventually passed the story along to his own editor, and saw it published in 1985. At 21 years of age, Ellis was a published novelist—and a successful one at that. Though filled with subject matter and situations that were likely far removed from the audience the book found, Less Than Zero spoke to the disillusioned youth of the time. Shortly thereafter, the book was optioned as a movie script, with Ellis set to adapt the novel for the screen. Though met with critical boos, the film, starring Andrew McCarthy, Robert Downey Junior, Jami Gertz and James Spader, secured Ellis’ future as one of the great voices of the generation. Finally, in 1991 Vintage Contemporaries, a division of Random House, picked up the book for publication. Though, again, the book (and its author) were met with much criticism, it is a title that has continued to sell well (and be debated) since its publication. Condemnation of the book resurfaced again in 2000 when film director Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) decided to turn the story into a feature film. Though it certainly renewed interest in the moral debate surrounding the book’s text, it also renewed the public’s interest in the book and its author.

Exclusive: 'Fictional' Bret Easton Ellis Hates Artoon!
Continuing the hard-hitting journalism for which GSW is renowned, we've been reading Bret Easton Ellis ' latest novel, Lunar Park , which stars the drugged-up and dysfunctional 'Bret Easton Ellis', the author of all Ellis' previous books, struggling to cope as someone apparently impersonating his American Psycho villain Patrick Bateman starts terrorizing his home town. But on P.116, Ellis' trademark cutting wit gets to work on Blinx creators Artoon , or more specifically, their pre-Blinx PS1/GBA platformer, as referenced with regard to Ellis' daughter: "Sarah went to the media room to play Pinobee , a video game about a flight-challenged and oddly charmless bumblebee whose expression of disgust always managed to fill me with alarm." We say it's time for a rumble between Sonic co-creator and Artoon founder Naoto Oshima and the fictional coke-snorting version of Bret Easton Ellis - who's with us? It's my duty to mention that the B.E.E. went to Bennington College, my own alma hot mamma.

Brief and Straightforward Guide Who is bret easton ellis?
http://www.wisegeek.com/who-is-bret-easton-ellis.htm
Who is Bret Easton Ellis?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Brett Easton Ellis is an American author famous for being the voice of Generation X . His first book, published at the age of 23, was translated into 25 languages and made him both famous and wealthy. His fourth book caused one of the biggest controversies in the literary world. Brett Easton Ellis was born in Los Angeles in 1964. His father, a successful property developer, has been the catalyst for much of his writing. Much of Ellis’ writing is seen by some as a therapeutic way of excising his demons. His first novel was Less Than Zero , published in 1985, the story of a group of superficial characters in Los Angeles whose main preoccupations are substance abuse and sex in a society that is devoid of meaning. It became an instant hit and was seen by many as a positive deconstruction of the nihilistic 80s. The book was written in a sparse, minimalist style. This is one of Ellis’ strengths, the ability to address important themes about society in a simplified style. His style has been much imitated, but rarely bettered. While coming across as writer who merely observes and reports, he is actually a very moralistic author. Moralistic was not a term used by many people on the publication of Ellis' fourth book.

Bret Easton Ellis Ain't Quite Melville Yet
When Mark Haskell Smith wrote in yesterday to ask, "Who's to say that Bret Easton Ellis isn't as 'classic' as Melville?", Benjamin Kessler couldn't help but respond. "Ellis clearly isn't," Kessler emails. "The term 'classic' is (mostly) an honor bestowed in hindsight. As Rachel Kahan pointed out , artists whose works make it into the canon were often misunderstood in their lifetime, because they were doing something new, as Melville, Joyce, Nabokov, etc. were. Ellis, on the other hand, has been perfectly understood in his lifetime. His works created the controversy that they were written to create, and Ellis has reaped the profits of his savvy marketing." I'm going to have to throw in a few younger names here for Kessler's (and your) consideration: David Mitchell Yannick Murphy Lydia Millet Joshua Ferris , and, hell yes, Jonathan Safran Foer and even Mark Z.
