Interview with Bret Easton Ellis
by Mark Amerika and Alexander Laurence
(c) 1994 Mark Amerika and Alexander Laurence Bret Easton Ellis is the author of four controversial novels including Less Than Zero The Rules of Attraction American Psycho , and The Informers . He grew up in Los Angeles where he played keyboards for many new wave groups, hung out in the LA punk scene, and now is often nostalgic for that time in the early 1980s. He wrote a few novels at an early age, made it fashionable to go to Bennington, and eventually moved to New York City. He was often attacked for the intolerable violence in his novels, his character's passivity, and his generally "devoid of morals" esthetic, especially in 1991's American Psycho which was so violent that one publisher refused to publish it. Presently, Ellis has been working on a novel about the fashion world and supermodels. So watch out! Mark Amerika: How did you come to write The Informers ? Where did it come from? Did you write this right after American Psycho Bret Easton Ellis: It was written over a ten year period of time. I started working on it in 1983 and I finished it last August. It was 50% longer. It was the project I could go to, with no intention of ever publishing it, whenever I got major writer's block with the other novels. I would go back to this book which seemed to be about a group of people that criss-crossed paths in Los Angeles. That would relax and loosen me up, whenever I got stuck or tripped over someone's voice in one of my other novels.

In 1985, twenty-one-year-old Bret Easton Ellis published Less than Zero . Written while he was still at college, the searing debut earned rapturous praise, including head-turning comparisons to Salinger, Fitzgerald, and Fellini. Six years, two books, and countless tabloid appearances later, Ellis served up American Psycho . The shocking story of fictional serial killer Patrick Bateman firmly divided literary camps in two: Simon and Schuster refused to publish the novel, forfeiting a six-figure advance; Fay Weldon, meanwhile, writing in the

I wish I'd never said it and that it had never been published." Bret Easton Ellis is wincing as we sit at the writing desk of his East Village apartment. While he'll cheerfully revisit the critical controversies surrounding American Psycho and Less Than Zero, a flippant remark made to Vanity Fair four years ago has him fretting a bit. "The Big Book" concept was picked up and used in virtually every piece that's appeared since. In a string-and-can game of telephone journalism, the ironic spirit disappeared, and Ellis was understood to mean that he fancied the forthcoming work his magnum opus one by a writer still in his mid-thirties. "I never wanted to create the expectation of 'the big book' because I thought it was going to take three or four years to write and would come out after American Psycho, and it didn't. It became the big book only because of how long it took to write and all the garbage that went on in the intervening years."

AUTHOR TALK August 2005
In his latest novel, LUNAR PARK , controversial author Bret Easton Ellis places his literary alter ego amidst the McMansions and golden retrievers of sleepy suburbia. In this interview Ellis discusses the fine line between fact and fiction, and the ways in which he defines himself as a writer. He also reflects on the past and present state of his career, and how his writing processes, his perspective, and his reception in the public have changed over time.
Question: We have to start with the most obvious question: the main character in LUNAR PARK is Bret Easton Ellis, author of LESS THAN ZERO, AMERICAN PSYCHO, etc… People are going to question just how fictional the novel is. What is your intention? How much of LUNAR PARK are we to believe is true? Bret Easton Ellis: Q: The book seems to suggest your identity as a writer is dependent on press, and that your career might be in need of resuscitation. Do you resent how you've been treated in the press, even as some suggest those relationships are something you have actively courted throughout your career? Who, ultimately, determines a writer's fate? You? Your readers? The press? Your publisher?

"People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles." Less Than Zero
Bret Easton Ellis published his first novel, "Less Than Zero" in 1985 at the age of 21, while still a student at Bennington College. The novel follows a college freshman, Clay, on his first trip home to L.A. from college at Camden, back East. The book made best-seller lists in spite of loud criticism, and so did his next book, "The Rules of Attraction."
If "Less Than Zero"'s descriptions of casual drug use, indiscriminate sex and seemingly commonplace violence gave leverage to complaints that Ellis's writing was morally ambiguous and glorified moral flatness, "American Psycho" gave his critics an armory.
"American Psycho" was published in 1991 by Vintage Books after Simon and Schuster refused to publish the book and cancelled Ellis's $300,000 contract. The gory and graphic tale of New York City yuppie/sociopath Patrick Bateman, propelled by controversy, wound up in movie theatres in 2000 as a major production.

Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis
Bret Easton Ellis has made a career of writing exciting novelsusually because of their subject matter as opposed to their execution. Consequently, every novel he has written so far has already been, or is being made, into a big-budget movie. While this is surely a great thing for his checkbook, it's also a compliment to certain qualities in his work. Movies require strong story lines and well-developed, nuanced characters. Ellis is a capable storyteller and, in his own way, develops full if painfully vapid characters. Yet, excitement aside, what movies also need (good movies, at least), and Ellis has not included in his latest novelistic effort, is a strong thematic focus and a clarity of execution. Lunar Park , which will be released this month, begins as a mock-memoir. In the first section, Bret Easton Ellis, a fictionalized version of the author, recounts his beginnings as a novelist and his subsequent rise to fame. (Well, actually, more like his triumphant beginnings as a novelist and his immediate rise to unmitigated and debaucherous superstardom.) The novel then recounts the events leading to the "present," in which the story of Ellis being haunted by his past, figuratively, becomes the story of Ellis being haunted by his past, literally and then attacked by his past, physically (it bites him on the thigh). If this recap makes the novel seem silly, it's understandable. The novel is silly.

Sting Like A Bee: A Critical Exploration Of All Things Bret Easton Ellis “My work is really about a culture that pisses me off, and a world that we live in that values all the wrong things.” -New York Times Interview with the Author “I was taken seriously. I was a joke. I was avant-garde. I was a traditionalist. I was underrated. I was over rated. I was partly guilty. I had orchestrated the controversy. I was incapable of orchestrating anything. I was considered the most misogynistic writer in existence. I was a victim of the burgeoning culture of the politically correct.” - Lunar Park Few living writers have had their first novel published their Junior year in college, their third novel banned, and every single one of their books made into movies. Only one springs to memory: Bret Easton Ellis. He’s an ordinary man with an extraordinary imagination. He’s had more of a hand in the evolution of contemporary fiction in the last twenty years than David Foster Wallace, Martin Amis, and Stephen King combined. Ellis’ work has been called moralistic, post-modern, and post-post-modern. In the tradition of Jonathan Swift, he is a satirist of the highest order, the only difference being that he is reporting on a culture and a time that is much more morally bankrupt than the era of Gulliver. And like De Sade and other dark commentators on moral voids in current society, he’s suffered for holding up the mirror.
