The Mill on the Floss

George Eliot was the pseudonym used by Mary Ann Evans. Eliot was born in Warwickshire, England in 1819. She was a Victorian writer of perceptive psychological novels.
After her father’s death in 1841, she traveled throughout Europe and settled in London. She began to work as sub editor at “Westminster Review’s. In 1954, George Eliot translated Feuerbach's “Essence of Christianity” from German. This is the only book that bears her real name: Mary Ann Evans.
George Eliot became the centre of a literary circle. There she met George Henry Lewes. Eliot went with Lewes to Germany in 1854. Later she wrote “The Mill on the Floss” which is a reflection over her relationship and common law marriage with Lewes. Eliot was first encouraged to write fiction by Lewes.
“Scenes of Clerical Life”, was Eliot’s first collection of stories published in 1858. She wrote under the pseudonym of George Eliot because at the time writing was considered to be a man’s not a woman’s profession. Later she published her first novel, “Adam Bede” that became a great success. The model for the main character in this story was Eliot’s father. Other major works of Eliot included: “The Mill on The Floss and “Silas Marner”. The novel that became known as her best was “Middlemarch”. The novel was about English provincial life in the early nineteenth century. Between 1860-1861 she spent time in Italy to collect material for “Romola”. The story was first published in the “Cornhill Magazine”.

Biographical Sketch
Born Mary Ann Evans in 1819, George Eliot was the daughter of a land agent who managed estates in the rural midlands, a formative experience that gave her an insight into country society that later greatly influenced and enriched her first works of fiction. She at different times of her life also spelled her name as Mary Anne, Marian, and Marianne, adopting the pen-name of Eliot only after her first work of fiction was published in 1857. Eliot was brought up in a narrow religious tradition, and at school she became a convert of Evangelicalism. Charles Bray, a free thinking manufacturer, influenced her skepticism of orthodox beliefs, although she never strayed from the ethical teachings of her childhood religion. Her works contain themes of love and duty, and affectionate portraits of clergymen and dissenters. She began her literary career with translations from the German of two works of religious speculation (1835-26), of which Strauss's Life of Jesus was published in 1846 without her name.

She spent her early life in the country, nursing a sick father, and beginning to develop the ideas that she would later explore in her writing. After the death of Mr. Evans, she travelled through Europe and eventually moved to London, where she became the editor of the “Westminster Review”. There she met George Henry Lewes, a married man at the time, who would be her companion until his death in 1878. In 1856, she decided to try her hand at writing fiction, something she had always wanted to do. With encouragement from Lewes, she wrote what later became SCENES OF CLERICAL LIFE. It was published in 1857, under the name of George Eliot. ADAM BEDE, the following year, became a huge sensation in the literary world. When the author’s identity was discovered, her publisher was afraid to print her next work because of the controversy surrounding the Lewes’ marriage. However, his fears proved unfounded, and George Eliot continued writing.

His brother-in-law, Charles Hennell, was the author of An Inquiry Concerning the Origin of Christianity (1838), a book that precipitated Evans' break with orthodoxy that had been long in preparation. Various books on the relation between the Bible and science had instilled in her keen mind the very doubts they were written to dispel. The ensuing storm raged for several months before they reached a compromise, leaving her free to think what she pleased so long as she appeared respectably at church, and she lived with him until his death in 1849. The Brays and the Hennells quickly drew her from extreme provincialism, introducing her to many ideas in violent disagreement with her Tory father's religious and political views. When Charles Hennell married in 1843, she took over from his wife the translating of D.F. Strauss's
