22. Middlemarch
An online guide to george eliot and the novel, with sections on critical reception, style, characterization, publication history, and biography.
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/collections/projects/eliot/middlemarch/
George Eliot is among the foremost writers of her time. In spite of her gender, her looks, and her eccentric beliefs, she earned a prominent place within the Victorian literary canon. Middlemarch falls near the end of her life and career, and it clinched her financial and popular success. In researching Middlemarch, we uncovered an almost unfathomable amount of information. Middlemarch 's scope as a novel is unquestionably vast; so too is the writing on it. Therefore, this project is intended only as an introduction into the world of Middlemarch commentary and criticism. Genevieve Davis and Diana Block look into the novel's immediate critical reception. Abby Hertzmark describes the development of the 8-part novel and the history of its publication. Jennifer Kremer gives us insights into the mind and life of the soft-spoken genius, Mary Anne Evans. Each contributed an annotated bibliography for their own subject, and Bryan Wagner and Dot Gribbin examined and annotated more current critical works. Davis designed the web page and assisted Wagner and Gribbin in putting the completed project online. Please feel free to email any one of us with questions regarding individual pages.

Essence of Christianity , the only one of her writings to which she attached her real name. It was not until she was nearly 40 that she appears to have discovered the true nature of her genius; for it was not until 1857 that The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton appeared in , and announced that a new writer of singular power had arisen. It was followed by and , all three being reprinted as Scenes from Clerical Life Adam Bede was published in 1859, The Mill on the Floss , in its earlier chapters largely autobiographical, in 1860, Silas Marner , perhaps the most artistically constructed of her books, in 1861. In 1860 and 1861 she visited Florence with the view of preparing herself for her next work, Romola , a tale of the times of Savonarola, which appeared in 1863 in the Cornhill Magazine Felix Holt the Radical followed in 1866. "George Eliot" by Virginia Woolf
George Eliot was the pseudonym of novelist, translator, and religious writer Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880). This article by Virginia Woolf was first published in The Times Literary Supplement , 20th November, 1919. To read George Eliot attentively is to become aware how little one knows about her. It is also to become aware of the credulity, not very creditable to one's insight, with which, half consciously and partly maliciously, one had accepted the late Victorian version of a deluded woman who held phantom sway over subjects even more deluded than herself. At what moment and by what means her spell was broken it is difficult to ascertain. Some people attribute it to the publication of her Life. Indeed, one cannot escape the conviction that the long, heavy face with its expression of serious and sullen and almost equine power has stamped itself depressingly upon the minds of people who remember George Eliot, so that it looks out upon them from her pages. Mr Gosse has lately described her as he saw her driving through London in a victoria: a large, thick-set sybil, dreamy and immobile, whose massive features, somewhat grim when seen in profile, were incongruously bordered by a hat, always in the height of Paris fashion, which in those days commonly included an immense ostrich feather.
