Dave Eggers honoured for work with emerging writers
CBC News Dave Eggers, the U.S.-based author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and an advocate for new writers, has won the $250,000 US Heinz Award for the arts. At 37, the San Francisco-based writer is the youngest person ever to receive the prize. Dave Eggers, shown in April 2001, said he will split his award among the seven chapters of 826 National, a writing and tutoring lab for children and teens.
(Associated Press) Pittsburgh's Heinz Family Foundation has been bestowing the awards for the past 13 years for contributions to arts, the environment, technology and public policy. On Wednesday, the foundation hailed Eggers as "a novelist whose meteoric commercial and critical success has helped propel him into the worlds of philanthropy, advocacy and education." Eggers is the founder of McSweeney's — a book, magazine and literary journal publisher — and of 826 National, a writing and tutoring lab for children and teens. Eggers put his own money from his successful books toward both enterprises.

What Dave Eggers is up to
posted August 06, 2002 at 11:51 am The New Yorker has an interview with Dave Eggers about his upcoming book (fiction this time). Here's an excerpt about San Francisco: "Living in the Bay Area, you're faced with more homelessness than probably any other place in America. So you have to be ready to deal with their plight all the time, and you have to make dozens of decisions each day about who to give money to and who not to. That's a lot of pressure, every day, and sometimes ten times a block, if you're walking down, say, Haight, or lower Geary. And you really do make these decisions in the most random ways." Eggers is also editing the upcoming The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2002 . The publisher describes the book as "a selection for young people of the best literature from mainstream and alternative American periodicals: from The New Yorker to Jane, Rolling Stone to The Onion, Vibe to various magazines, zines, and journals that, if you're over thirty, you've never heard of." I wonder if the book will include any writing from the Internet? (Probably not...I've got half a mind to pitch a Best Online Writing 2002 book to Houghton Mifflin. There's a lot of online-only writing that deserves a wider audience.) Reader Comments 39 comments Erika says: And, FYI, if anyone wants to hang out with M. Eggers and Mark Eitzel, there's a benefit for 826 Valencia, Dave's student writing workshop and pirate supply store, tomorrow night at Gallery Lux

Sometimes, Gawker is good for something . Apparently, Dave Eggers has sent out a notice to lifetime subscribers of , begging these lifetime subscribers to switch over to a normal yearly subscription. The whole notice is available in full here UPDATE: Lindsay nails it. UPDATE 2: I should probably point out, in all fairness, that since the notice was without a byline, Dave Eggers may not have been the one to write it.]
Hipster Provenance?
Downsyn I would like to reiterate to my readers that I am by no means cool or hip, nor plan to be in the immediate future.
Easy Dinero for a Good Cause
The Rake has called for Eggers to offer an explanation for his critical flip-flop on Infinite Jest What is the What , for a polite and civil conversation. Except on one point. At the end of the interview, he must respond on audio to the DFW question and he must respond to any followup questions by me, however tough and challenging, relating to this subject. Come on, Mr. Eggers, this is easy money for a good cause. All you have to do is explain yourself. Or are litbloggers beneath your munificence? UPDATE: Matthew Tiffany has pledged another $49 UPDATE 2: The Rake has upped his sum to $109. Hell, this is starting to feel a bit like Jerry Lewis.]

Event Info Unlike the characters in most contemporary African literature familiar to the West, the affluent family in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut novel, Purple Hibiscus , suffers under its own internal oppression more than it does under any greater political strife. The Nigerian author's second book, Half of a Yellow Sun , takes on a more typical theme of civil war (in this case, the Biafran conflict in the late '60s), but the story is told with a touch of Adichie's unique sensuality. Dave Eggers' latest work is a semifictional biography of Sudanese refugee Valentino Achak Deng; the two are joined tonight by Abraham Awolich, co-director of the New Sudan Education Initiative. Dave Eggers. "What Is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng; A Novel."
John E. (Jack) Becker
June 27, 2007 What is the What The title is weird. The first four words make no sense. And then, is this an autobiography by Achak Deng or a novel by Dave Eggers In the Preface Deng tries to sort it out. It's an autobiography, "the soulful account of my life," the harrowing story of Deng's flight from the holocaust in Sudan, under constant threat of bombings, beasts, and human murderers, struggling to survive on whatever he could find to eat. But Deng didn't write it down. He told his stories over the course of years to Eggers who shaped it into a "novel," "approximating" Deng's voice, sewing together the events of Deng's life. "The book is a form of struggle, and it keeps my spirit alive to struggle. To struggle is to strengthen my faith, my hope, and my belief in humanity." (p. 5)

Dave Eggers' What is the What (review)
The American writer Dave Eggers has a cult following, especially with younger readers. He came to international fame with his part-fiction, part-memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and in his latest novel, Dave Eggers has also blended genres; What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng is based on a real-life story. It's told by Valentino, a Sudanese refugee in the USA. Ryan Paine is editor of Voiceworks magazine, and a fan of Dave Eggers. For the Book Show he's been reading What is the What which he received as a parcel in the mail recently. Transcript
Transcript
Ryan Paine : When I ripped open the parcel to find Dave Eggers' new book, What is the What , I was grinning like a spoilt brat at Christmas. I stroked off the white fluff left by the packaging, opened the book somewhere in the middle, and took a great big whiff. I was at the train station. A young girl looked at me funny, like I was some kind of weirdo, caressing and smelling this large brown book. But I'm just one of many young readers who live with a kind of expectant longing for every new Eggers release. And since his debut memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius , the majority of Eggers' fiction has faithfully and thankfully lived up to those expectations. He tells moving stories in exciting, accessible language that is never far removed from the way we actually feel, think, write and speak.

AIDS Walk, Dave Eggers and Mom and Dad
The AIDS Walk for Vermont C.A.R.E.S was this past Saturday and was a huge success. It was on the same day as the UVM Serve-A-Thon so a lot of people—Greek chapters in particular—came down and participated. Over $8,000 was raised for the organization and it was really important to them to have so many people to walk. We started in City Hall Park, walked up Pearl St. to campus, and down Main St. to end back at the park. A lot of the girls from my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, came out, and a bunch of the boys from AEPi stood at all the crosswalks wearing bright orange vests. Next Monday kicks off Greek week; we have penny wars, Greek Jeopardy, Greek God and Goddess, a potluck, and wheelchair basketball. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I think a great opportunity for me to get to know people in other chapters. I only joined Greek life this past spring so I’m still pretty new. It will be good to have so many events next week with people from all the sororities and all the fraternities. Mostly, though, I think I’ll be able to eat for free every night next week. I also saw Dave Eggers speak at Champlain College last Thursday. He was the keynote speaker at their Community Book Club; all of their incoming freshman had to read What Is The What? this year. He talked about his relationship with Valentino Deng and their trips back to Valentino’s hometown of Marial Bai in Sudan. It was really interesting to see the pictures and to hear about the relationship the two of them cultivated in the process of writing the book. I haven’t read it yet but bought a copy; four dollars from each purchase goes directly to a fund started for Valentino.
