Eggers, 37, used earnings from his autobiographical 2000 bestseller "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" to launch 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center in San Francisco for children ages 6 to 18. Recital Hall, PAC
UAlbany, Uptown Campus Dave Eggers became the guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Christopher, after they were orphaned by the deaths of both of their parents from cancer within a five month period. Eggers recounts his experiences as a "single mother" in the postmodern literary memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000). The work quickly became a bestseller and Eggers became a celebrity of sorts, getting such an abundance of media coverage that the media soon began covering the massive coverage. "AHWOSG," as the book is known to its devotees, is told by means of a playful, experimentally structured narrative, despite the fact that it deals with deeply serious issues, including death, grief and parenthood (as well as several non-serious issues, including the author's obsessive quest to make an appearance on the MTV reality show, "The Real World"). New York Times bestseller, has garnered something of a cult following and has been hailed in the press as one of the finest examples of literature to be produced by a member of "Generation X." Eggers became a celebrity of sorts, getting such an abundance of media coverage that the media soon began covering the massive coverage. "A virtuosic piece of writing, a big, daring, manic-depressive stew of a book that noisily announces the debut of a talentedyes, staggeringly talentednew writer."

I read about Parking Wars I thought it looked interesting. The hopes are that folks like you and me will watch it and look at said workers in a different light. I mean, duuuuuuuude, they are just working. Just like I'm working now, you're working now, your roomate is working only a couple hours, etc... So I left. I left thinking that maybe I'd watch this show, at least the first half because duuuuuuuuuuude also starts tonight, it's third season. I drove down to Main Street, thinking I'd run into Starbucks and then head downtown. I saw the dude, walking down the street slowly- his little computer thing dangling from a strap slung over his shoulder. I had no change. I never have change. Poop, change would be amazing...wouldn't it Poop...yes! But no, so I scooted into a spot. The meter was expired, but the man was now strolling across the street and it shouldn't take long for an iced mocha in one of those sizes...
Ha
Yeah, I came out and I had a ticket and the parking fella was now halfway down the block- How did he get down there so fast!

There's been a snag with issue No. 4, consisting of 14 exquisitely designed miniature books. It's supposed to come in a sturdy custom box, but the prototype won't close, and the printerwhich is, no kidding, in Icelandis scrambling for a replacement. Now, say editor Eggers and editor at large Sean Wilsey, munching on doughnuts, they can't look at a box without thinking about the minutiae of its construction. "That's the box we're going to end up with," jokes Eggers, pointing at the flimsy container for breakfast pastry.

was briefly a significant magazine, and the Eggersards remain a movement of some importance. They represent a tight network of associates of the impresario Dave Eggers. Their journals and readings have staged the most commanding popular art-provocations of the last ten years. The Eggersards should be compared to schools of the historical avant-garde, the short-lived groups that reorganized European literary culture around bohemian factions. Eggersards created an identifiable style. They generated a body of sub-literary work. Eggers proved himself a possibly significant writer. His genius for creating institutions of a less elitist literary culture ( Believer ) is beyond question. And if his group restarts the engine of literary innovation and strife, then it will have performed a real historic service. As far as content goes, though, the innovation of the Eggersards was their creation of a regressive avant-garde. The first regression was ethical. Eggersards returned to the claims of childhood. Transcendence would not figure in their thought. Intellect did not interest them, but kids did. Childhood is still their leitmotif. A Heartbreaking Work The paratextual games that Oprah The Real World , but refused the class decline and loss of leadership that participation in open confession, or popular entertainment, would bring them. But perhaps more noteworthy is the laundry list of culturally beneficial and generally open-minded endeavors which Eggers has undertaken since achieving his literary superstardom. Among these include the founding of the McSweeneys literary journal and website ( www.mcsweeneys.net ), which has provided a high-profile and artist friendly forum for authors unknown and famous. He has gone on tour with Brooklyn bright eyes They Might Be Giants, combining his own prose with their equally esoteric and compelling music. He helped to found The Believer ( www.believermag.com

Dave Eggers Is Still Concerned About Africa!
"I'm here to see Dave Eggers." "What is the What?" "What?" And so began my amazing night with Dave Eggers. Okay, so it wasn't exactly a candlelit dinner (if ONLY), but I did get a front row seat last night when he spoke at NYU's Center for Global Affairs. He was plugging "What is the What," his last-year's novel about the Lost Boys of Sudan. I knew his velocity. He was heartbreaking, staggering and yes, genius (or penis here for more info. Foreign Affairs editor Gideon Rose was on hand to interview Eggers and one of the Lost Boys (but not the one featured in the book) named Abraham. Eggers and Abraham were far more eloquent than Rose, who wouldn't shut up about his opinions of Judaism and also was really into rereading passages of Eggers' books when we all knew that Eggers' velvet voice would do it more justice. Rose even read the last paragraph of the book when he knew that nearly half of the audience hadn't finished it. Okay, so that's clearly not as bad as ethnic cleansing, but he's still a dick.

Interview with Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng Essay by Dave Eggers Reader's Guide "It Was Just Boys Walking" Saturday May 26, 2007 The Guardian In October 2002, I received a letter from a woman named Mary Williams, who introduced herself as the founder of an Atlanta-based organisation called the Lost Boys Foundation. In the letter, in surprisingly short order, she asked me to drop whatever I was doing and help a refugee from Sudan tell the story of his life. It was a pretty unusual letter. I had heard of the Lost Boys. There had been a slew of articles about them in the American media that year, and I read about the group with the same fascination as anyone else. I knew that 3,800 young Sudanese men - called Lost Boys because they had been unaccompanied minors for much of their 13 years in Ethiopian and Kenyan refugee camps - had recently been resettled in cities across the United States, in groups numbering from 20 to 400. I knew that the young men, as boys, had fled their villages in southern Sudan as the civil war raged in the mid-1980s, and that none had returned home since. They'd been placed in cities such as Jacksonville and Fargo and San Jose, areas chosen not for their similarity to Sudan, but for their affordability and positive attitude towards international immigrants. There were 180 Lost Boys in Atlanta, and the Lost Boys Foundation was active in helping them find jobs, mentors and educational opportunities.

In recent years, there have been a few literary dustups — how insane is it that such a thing exists in a world at war? — about readability in contemporary fiction. In essence, there are some people who feel that fiction should be easy to read, that it’s a popular medium that should communicate on a somewhat conversational wavelength. On the other hand, there are those who feel that fiction can be challenging, generally and thematically, and even on a sentence-by-sentence basis — that it’s okay if a person needs to work a bit while reading, for the rewards can be that much greater when one’s mind has been exercised and thus (presumably) expanded.
Much in the way that would-be civilized debates are polarized by extreme thinkers on either side, this debate has been made to seem like an either/or proposition, that the world has room for only one kind of fiction, and that the other kind should be banned and its proponents hunted down and, why not, dismembered.
