A Plea to Save New Scientist
Posted by John Baez
The SF writer Greg Egan has issued the following public plea to save the magazine New Scientist . Please take a look, and consider sending them an email Greg Egan writes: New Scientist is a British-based publication where many thousands of lay people get their information on scientific matters, and ( IMHO ) it does an excellent job about 70% of the time. But the combination of a sensationalist bent and a lack of basic knowledge by its writers (most obviously in physics) is rendering it unreliable often enough to constitute a real threat to the public understanding of science. There are many areas in cosmology, fundamental physics and so on where there are controversies over issues that are hotly contested by various competent, highly educated and respected scientists, and I have no quarrel with New Scientist publishing views on various sides of these debates, even when those from the opposing camp would consider the claims to be nonsense.

Book: "Axiomatic" by Greg Egan (5/5 stars)
This is a book of short stories by Greg Egan, one of the most successful Australian sci-fi writers of all time.
I'm already a fan, having read "Luminous", another book of short stories, as well as "Permutation City" and "Quarantine". I also have "Diaspora" on my shelf, but I haven't read it yet. Shortly. Shortly.
I thought that "Luminous" was great - there were at least three or four really good short stories in there, including "Reasons to be Cheerful", probably my favorite ever short story, and "Mitochondrial Eve", a close second.
Because "Axiomatic" is older, I expected it to be less polished and less interesting. I was completely wrong. Almost every story was amazing in some way.
I highly recommend this for intellectual sci-fi fans. Don't miss Egan, we aren't going to see anything this good for a long, long time.

Philosophy of Religion
http://www.princeton.edu/~adame/teaching/PHI325_F2006 PHI 325, Fall 2006. Adam Elga (follow link for contact information, office hour). Class meetings: Mon, Wed 12:30-1:20, in location: TBA. Precept times: TBA AI: Matt Strohl mstrohl@princeton.edu We start with two traditional arguments: that the apparently unnecessary pain in the universe shows that there is no god (the problem of evil), and that the apparent designed nature of the universe shows that there is a god (the argument from design). We then consider various questions in creation ethics (e.g., what sort of genetic modifications to one's offspring are justifiable) in the light of the theological arguments we have discussed so far. Next, starting with a discussion Pascal's wager, we assess the extent to which one may reasonably control one's beliefs and desires. Finally, we ask whether the sources of our own beliefs and desires (concerning what is valuable, or what is worth doing) show that life is absurd. Prerequisite: One previous philosophy course. Grading: No P/D/F. 20% homework assignments and class, precept participation, 35% midterm paper, 45% final paper.
