But the moment you stop for a moment and try to analyse what we mean by “beauty”, it suddenly becomes extraordinarily complicated'. Jonathan goes to the National Gallery and meets curator Colin Wiggins. Colin shows Jonathan three paintings: Gainsborough’s

Jonathan Edwards
Recently I have been reading Iain Murray's excellent biography of Jonathan Edwards published by Banner. I have taken a great interest in Edwards this year having found his abridged works (published by Grace Publications) most helpful. I was struck by Edwards' direct and unapologetic style and his scripture centred approach which both shook me and allowed me to vividly imagine his awed audience. Murray's biography tells of a highly intelligent young man who became consumed with a passion for God's word at a very young age, devoting his entire life towards the preaching of it. It saddens me that very few Pastors today seem to preach as Edwards did- the gospel is plain and simple and should be preached as so! I hope and pray that my heart will ever be changed to be like Edwards' and the Puritans- that I might be meek and humble and also full of zeal for the word of God! Newsweek's Jonathan Alter and Liz Edwards Square Off On Health Care Debate

At a John Edwards event earlier this afternoon in Bedford, NH, we happened upon a very interesting conversation taking place between Elizabeth Edwards and Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter. First a bit of background: A few weeks ago, Alter wrote a piece in Newsweek commenting on the debate about our nation's health care crisis. Specifically, he discussed the battle taking place between Edwards and Obama on exactly how they would negotiate with the pharmaceutical companies. Edwards, campaigning with a fierce populist tone, believes that drug companies must be excluded from any discussion on health care reform, while Obama says he would invite all of the key stakeholders to the table. Alter made his case to Elizabeth following her husband's speech. He believes that while Edwards does make a convincing political argument, he must dial-back his tone a bit, especially given that Elizabeth, who is being treated for cancer, wouldn't have the drugs necessary without the research, development and production of medicine from these companies. Take a listen to this podcast of the conversation. (Rough transcript below)

The devil delights in the misery of men from cruelty, and from envy and revenge, and because he delights in misery, for its own sake, from a malicious disposition. And whereas the heavenly inhabitants are in the text called upon to rejoice over Babylon, because God had avenged them on her; it is not to be understood that they are to rejoice in having their revenge glutted, but to rejoice in seeing the justice of God executed, and in seeing his love to them in executing it on his enemies.

The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God's help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ's sake. Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week. 1. Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to God's glory, and my own good, profit and pleasure, in the whole of my duration, without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriad's of ages hence. Resolved to do whatever I think to be my duty and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general. Resolved to do this, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many and how great soever. 2. Resolved, to be continually endeavoring to find out some new invention and contrivance to promote the aforementioned things. 3. Resolved, if ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again. 4. Resolved, never to do any manner of thing, whether in soul or body, less or more, but what tends to the glory of God; nor be, nor suffer it, if I can avoid it.

After a precocious childhood (before he was thirteen he had a good knowledge of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew and was writing papers on philosophy) he entered Yale in 1716. It appears that it was during his time at college that he "began to have a new kind of apprehensions and ideas of Christ, and the work of redemption, and the glorious way of salvation by him." After a short pastorate in New York, he was appointed a tutor at Yale. In 1724 he became pastor of the church at

Edwards, Jonathan, Berkeley and Locke Edwards's favorite themes were predestination and the absolute dependence of humble man upon God and divine grace, which alone could save humanity. He rejected with fire the Arminian (see Remonstrants Great Awakening to New England. Edwards was stern in demanding strict orthodoxy and fervent zeal from his congregation. He was unbending in a controversy over tests for church membership, and in 1750 his congregation dismissed him from Northampton. At Stockbridge, Mass., where he went to care for the Native American mission and to minister to a small white congregation, he completed his theological masterpiece

Mudd Manuscript Library commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of the American theologian and philosopher Jonathan Edwards. The exhibit features a large portrait, 14 books, and 15 documents from the Princeton University Library's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Running from July 21, 2003 through February 1, 2004, the exhibit chronicles Edwards's life as a preacher, leader of the religious revival known as the Great Awakening, and the third president of the College of New Jersey, as Princeton University was known in his day. At the age of ten he wrote an essay on the nature of the soul. At 13 he entered the Collegiate School of Connecticut (now Yale University) and he graduated in 1720 as valedictorian of his class. After two additional years of study in theology at Yale, he preached for eight months in a New York church and then returned to Yale as a college tutor, studying, at the same time, for his master's degree. He was ordained in 1727 and received a call to assist his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, pastor of the church at Northampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, which had one of the largest and wealthiest congregations in the colony. When Edwards was 26, his grandfather died, and the young man became pastor at Northampton. He was a firm believer in

Models for Reformation: Jonathan Edwards, The First Great Awakening
Jonathan Edwards, sometimes known as the postmillennialist's postmillennialist, is best known for his role in the Great Awakening, which began as a revival in several churches along the Connecticut River Valley. Through his preaching, revivalistic fervor spread like wildfire throughout the colonies. Evangelistic zeal and millennial hopes went hand and hand. Edwards' preaching that the millennium would commence in America fueled reformation zeal within our embryonic nation. In his work, History of Redemption, Edwards saw all of human history as a progressive march toward victory for the kingdom of God. Edwards believed that revivals in the colonies were but a forerunner of what would commence in centuries to come - the ultimate glorious light of a "Golden Age." He taught that history moves through a pulsation of seasons of revival and spiritual awakening; that there are times of retreat and advance; that the work of revival is carried out by "remarkable outpourings of the Spirit." Says Edwards: "Time after time, when religion seemed to be almost gone, and it was come to the last extremity, then God granted a revival, and sent some angel or prophet, or raised up some eminent person, to be an instrument of their reformation." Edwards himself was to be the instrument of New England's reformation in the 1730s and '40s. He always insisted that there would be times of conflict, remissions and lulls between the sovereign outpourings of the Spirit. A decline in the spiritual and moral character of our nation, according to Edwards, is to be interpreted as a preparation for an even greater outpouring.
