SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD
by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
Enfield, Connecticut
July 8, 1741 Their foot shall slide in due time
Deut. xxxii. 35 In this verse is threatened the vengeance of God on the wicked unbelieving Israelites, who were God's visible people, and who lived under the means of grace; but who, notwithstanding all God's wonderful works towards them, remained (as ver. 28.) void of counsel, having no understanding in them. Under all the cultivations of heaven, they brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit; as in the two verses next preceding the text. The expression I have chosen for my text, Their foot shall slide in due time , seems to imply the following doings, relating to the punishment and destruction to which these wicked Israelites were exposed.
  • That they were always exposed to destruction; as one that stands or walks in slippery places is always exposed to fall. This is implied in the manner of their destruction coming upon them, being represented by their foot sliding. The same is expressed, Psalm 73:18. "Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction."

Jonathan Edwards: On the Great Awakening
December 12, 1743 Between 1730 and 1745 there swept over the American colonies from Maine to Georgia a religious revival known as the Great Awakening. The revival movement, unlike the earlier doctrine of the Puritans, promised the grace of God to all who could experience a desire for it. An account of the second wave of the Great Awakening in Northampton, Massachusetts, is given in the following letter of December 12, 1743, addressed by Jonathan Edwards to the Reverend Thomas Prince in Boston. The Mr. Whitefield mentioned by Edwards was the Reverend George Whitefield, an English evangelist who traveled the American colonies in 1740 preaching to massive revival meetings. Ever since the great work of God that was wrought here about nine years ago, there has been a great abiding alteration in this town in many respects. There has been vastly more religion kept up in the town, among all sorts of persons, in religious exercises and in common conversation than used to be before. There has remained a more general seriousness and decency in attending the public worship. There has been a very great alteration among the youth of the town with respect to reveling, frolicking, profane and unclean conversation, and lewd songs. Instances of fornication have been very rare. There has also been a great alteration among both old and young with respect to tavern haunting. I suppose the town has been in no measure so free of vice in these respects for any long time together for this sixty years as it has been this nine years past.

    Merry Christmas!
Here's one of this year's Christmas card. Every year I do four different designs. This year I've incorporated all four designs on each card, each member of the band has their turn on the front. Some of the previous years variations are on my website in the illustration section.
Thanks for all the great comments I've had since starting this blog and thanks to (amongst others) Drawn! and Forbidden Planet for giving it such a plug. There's plenty more to come next year. Y'all come back now, y'hear? Posted by Jonathan Edwards at 2 comments

Taken From the Rational Biblical Theology of Jonathan Edwards
    by John Gerstner, Chapter 16
When the term “covenant” is used, the general educated reader needs to be told its religious meaning. The general reader, somewhat literate on matters religious and Christian, will likely think of the “covenant of grace”, which he will likely associate generally with Protestantism, and he may know it is especially associated with Calvinism and Puritanism. The more specialized religious reader may know that though the “covenant of grace” is central, there are a number of other covenants in that system: covenants of redemption, works, and church and state. Jonathan Edwards was concerned with all of these, especially the covenants of redemption and of grace. After an examination of Calvinism and covenants generally, I will briefly discuss the doctrine of the covenants as found in Edwards theology: the covenants of redemption, works, and grace, the covenant and children, the Half-way Covenant and the state covenant

    Jonathan Edwards: An Appreciation
Tom J. Nettles Happy Birthday, Jonathan Edwards! By the time fall of 2003 is well under way, the three-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Jonathan Edwards will be upon us. Baptists should breathe a collective word of gratitude to God for the positive impact of such a gifted servant for the cause of the gospel in general and for the positive impact on Baptists specifically. This edition of the Founders Journal is given to that privilege and duty. Jonathan Edwards was born on October 5, 1703, the fifth child and first son of eleven children born to Timothy and Esther Edwards. Timothy Edwards had gone to the parish church in East Windsor, Massachusetts, in 1694 at twenty-five years of age and stayed there for life. He was zealous for the cause of the Gospel and for the piety and education of his children. Jonathan was the happy recipient of this care. He never seemed to resent it, but found it one of his chief graces to have been reared and educated in such an atmosphere. He learned to push himself much harder than his father ever dreamed of doing. He accomplished his undergraduate work at Yale 1716-20 and finished the masters in 1722. From 1722 to 1724 he served as temporary pastor for two churches, less than a year each, in New York and Bolton, Connecticut. One of the most spiritually traumatic periods of his life came during the three years he spent as tutor at Yale during a very unsettled time at the college when its administration was most unstable. In 1726 he went to assist his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, in the church at Northampton. In 1727 he married the love of his life, Sarah Pierpont. His grandfather died in 1729 and Edwards became pastor of the church. He stayed there until he was dismissed in 1750 in a controversy over the proper recipients of communion.

THEOLOGIANS Jonathan Edwards America's greatest theologian "[I wish] to lie low before God, as in the dust; that I might be nothing, and that God might be all, that I might become as a little child." At age 14, Jonathan Edwards, already a student at Yale, read philosopher John Locke with more delight "than the most greedy miser finds when gathering up handfuls of silver and gold, from some newly discovered treasure." He also was a young man with profound spiritual sensitivities. At age 17, after a period of distress, he said holiness was revealed to him as a ravishing, divine beauty. His heart panted "to lie low before God, as in the dust; that I might be nothing, and that God might be all, that I might become as a little child." This combination of intellect and piety characterized Edward's whole life.

Holly Reed, 2004 Born into a religious and social climate being redefined by the Enlightenment, Jonathan Edwards took upon himself the task of redefining and revitalizing a traditional theological position for a new era. Edwards was born to Timothy and Esther Stoddard Edwards on October 5, 1703. He was the fifth of eleven children, and the only son. His family, both matrilineally and patrilineally, was of solid Calvinistic and Puritan foundations. It was also a family that could be considered part of the unspoken colonial aristocracy, which included those families which were highly educated, culturally enlightened, and held positions of power and influence. Entering life in such a milieu, Edwards had all the privileges associated with the elites of New England, including a sound and thorough education and access to the most contemporary scholarly works available. During his years in Northampton, Edwards authored a number of memorable sermons and treatises that reflected the concerns and situations of his time as well as his revivalist inclinations and theological insights. These include

Early American and Colonial Period to 1776: Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
Index The antithesis of John Woolman is Jonathan Edwards, who was born only 17 years before the Quaker notable. Woolman had little formal schooling; Edwards was highly educated. Woolman followed his inner light; Edwards was devoted to the law and authority. Both men were fine writers, but they reveal opposite poles of the colonial religious experience. Edwards was molded by his extreme sense of duty and by the rigid Puritan environment, which conspired to make him defend strict and gloomy Calvinism from the forces of liberalism springing up around him. He is best known for his frightening, powerful sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" (1741): [I]f God should let you go, you would immediately sink, and sinfully descend, and plunge into the bottomless gulf....The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked....he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the bottomless gulf. Edwards's sermons had enormous impact, sending whole congregations into hysterical fits of weeping. In the long run, though, their grotesque harshness alienated people from the Calvinism that Edwards valiantly defended. Edwards's dogmatic, medieval sermons no longer fit the experiences of relatively peaceful, prosperous 18th-century colonists. After Edwards, fresh, liberal currents of tolerance gathered force.

The Jonathan and Darlene recordings were parodies of a bad lounge act. Weston, as pianist Jonathan, played arrangements in 7/4 time, tripped over chords, and speeded up suddenly on one bar only to slow down again on the next. Stafford, as singer Darlene, would stumble over words, miss her cues, sing terribly off-key, and throw in unusual vocal sounds.
