Jonathan Edwards
First published Tue Jan 15, 2002; substantive revision Tue Nov 7, 2006 Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian. His work as a whole is an expression of two themes the absolute sovereignty of God and the beauty of God's holiness. The first is articulated in Edwards' defense of theological determinism, in a doctrine of occasionalism, and in his insistence that physical objects are only collections of sensible "ideas" while finite minds are mere assemblages of "thoughts" or "perceptions." As the only real cause or substance underlying physical and mental phenomena, God is "being in general," the "sum of all being." Edwards' second theme is articulated in accounts of God's end in creation, and of the nature of true virtue and true beauty. God creates in order to manifest a holiness which consists in a benevolence which alone is truly beautiful. Genuine human virtue is an imitation of divine benevolence and all finite beauty is an image of divine loveliness. True virtue is needed to discern this beauty, however, and to reason rightly about "divine things." Edwards' projected History of Redemption would have drawn these themes together, for it is in his redemptive work in history that God's sovereignty, holiness, and beauty are most clearly exhibited.

of
Jonathan Edwards
BEING SENSIBLE THAT I AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT GOD' S HELP, I DO HUMBLY ENTREAT HIM BY HIS GRACE TO ENABLE ME TO KEEP THESE RESOLUTIONS, SO FAR AS THEY ARE AGREEABLE TO HIS WILL, FOR CHRIST' S SAKE.
Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week. 1. Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to God' s glory, and my own good, profit and pleasure, in the whole of my duration, without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence. Resolved to do whatever I think to be my duty and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general. Resolved to do this, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever. 2. Resolved, to be continually endeavoring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the aforementioned things. 3. Resolved, if ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again. 4. Resolved, never to do any manner of thing, whether in soul or body, less or more, but what tends to the glory of God; nor be, nor suffer it, if I can avoid it.

Jonathan Edwards - Olympic Triple-jumper
Jonathan Edwards shot to fame when he took the World Record for the Triple Jump in 1995. But he was Triple Jumping back in 1988 at the Seoul Olympics. He won the Commonwealth Games silver medal in 1990 and 1994, and in 1992 took the World Cup Triple Jump, when he went to Barcelona for the Olympics. He took World Champion Bronze in 1993. Barcelona was a disappointment. However, as a Christian he learnt from the experience, and had to question his feelings: He lost his world title to a Cuban competitor at the August 97 games in Athens. He was disappointed not to hit gold, but was still delighted to have come away with a silver medal. Britain won no gold medals at all, claiming five silver and one bronze. The European Championships at Budapest in August 98 were a triumph. Jonathan effectively won in the first found with a championship record of 17.84 metres. But with his last jump late in the afternoon came another record - 17.99 metres. Jonathan was delighted for the British team. Never before had Britain managed nine golds and topped the table at the same time. He said

FiOS sucks
Or rather their Actiontec router sucks. I have been using FiOS happily for 18 months for data and voice, and decided to try out their TV. Their set-top boxes use IP-over-cable (MoCA), so they had to replace the prior D-Link router with their private-label Actiontec. What a piece of crap. Site Map Edwards, Jonathan "The greatest philosopher-theologian yet to grace the American scene" (Perry Miller). After a precocious childhood (before he was thirteen he had a good knowledge of Latin, Creek, and Hebrew and was writing papers on philosophy) he entered Yale in 1716. It appears that it was during his time at college that he "began to have a new kind of apprehensions and ideas of Christ, and the work of redemption, and the glorious way of salvation by him." After a short pastorate in New York, he was appointed a tutor at Yale. In 1724 he became pastor of the church at Northampton, Massachusetts, a colleague of his grandfather Samuel Stoddard until the latter's death in 1729. Under the influence of Edwards's powerful preaching, the Great Awakening occurred in 1734-35, and a geographically more extensive revival in 1740-41. Edwards became a firm friend of George Whitefield, then itinerating in America. After various differences with prominent families in his congregation, and a prolonged controversy over the question of the admission of the unconverted to the Lord's Supper, he was dismissed as pastor in 1750 (though, curiously, still preached until a suitable replacement could be found) and became, in 1751, pastor of the church in the frontier town of Stockbridge, and a missionary to the Indians. He was elected president of Princeton in 1757, but was reluctant to accept because of his desire to continue writing. Finally yielding to pressure, he was inaugurated in February 1758. One month later he died of the effects of a smallpox injection.

Thorny Issue: Excursus
I have really enjoyed reading Michael’s posts on this “thorny issue” in Edwards’s thought regarding the new spiritual sense he speaks of in A Divine and Supernatural Light . In the last post, Michael called our attention to Fiering’s line that this new spiritual sense is “an infused habit that is identical to holy love and holiness” (Norman S. Fiering, Jonathan Edwards's Moral Thought and Its British Context
As Michael said, this is an important line to understand. I want to focus on the latter half of the statement, that this infused habit “is identical to love and holiness.” I’ve been reading through Edwards’s
