Jonathan Edwards was one of the most significant religious thinkers in American history. Born October 5, 1703, in East Windsor, Connecticut Colony, Edwards was a child prodigy. At the age of ten he wrote an essay on the nature of the soul. At 13 he entered the Collegiate School of Connecticut (now Yale University) and he graduated in 1720 as valedictorian of his class. After two additional years of study in theology at Yale, he preached for eight months in a New York church and then returned to Yale as a college tutor, studying, at the same time, for his master's degree. He was ordained in 1727 and received a call to assist his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard, pastor of the church at Northampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, which had one of the largest and wealthiest congregations in the colony. When Edwards was 26, his grandfather died, and the young man became pastor at Northampton, and remained there until 1750. He was a notable pulpit orator. He was a firm believer in

Jonathan Edwards
Portrait of a Revival Preacher
By Leonard Ravenhill
J onathan Edwards, 1703 - 1758, achieved greatness as an American preacher-evangelist, principal of a college, mystic, and revivalist. "Jonathan Edwards is not only the greatest of all American theologians and philosophers but the greatest of our pre-19th century writers as well." So writes Randall Stewart in his book American Literature and Christian Doctrine. Here is a concise summary of the life of Edwards from the able pen of Perry Miller: "Jonathan Edwards was one of America's five or six major artists-who happened to work with ideas instead of with poems or novels. He was much more of a psychologist and poet than a logician. Though he devoted his genius to topics derived from the body of divinity (the will, virtue, sin), he traced them in the manner of the very finest spectator. . . ." For us to see Jonathan Edwards ascend his pulpit today, a candle in one hand and his sermon manuscript in the other, would cause a titter in the congregation. From our
m o d e r n foam-cushioned church seats, with carpeted aisles and soothing background music, we can scarcely capture the old-time dignity of the unpretentious church where Edwards and others held captive the hearts and minds of their hearers.

"That world of misery, that lake of brimstone, is extended abroad under you. There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God...and you have nothing to stand upon...; there is nothing between you and Hell but the air."-from "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God""
Jonathan Edwards was the only boy among eleven children. In 1720 he graduated from Yale as the valedictorian of his class. He was saved that same year at the age of seventeen. He continued at Yale working on a graduate degree in theology.
Edwards was ordained in 1727 and joined his grandfather as an assistant pastor. In 1729 he became pastor of the church in Northampton, Massachusetts, which had some six hundred members. In 1735 God's blessing on his preaching resulted in a great revival with more than three hundred people saved and added to the church.
Edwards is considered to be one of the men most responsible for the Great Awakening. His famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," was first preached in 1741 at Enfield, Massachusetts. In 1750 Edwards was voted out by his church after his attempt to limit church membership to those who made a profession of faith in Christ. He spent the next seven years as a missionary to the Indians at Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Jonathan Edwards
From LoveToKnow 1911
JONATHAN EDWARDS (1703-1758), American theologian and philosopher, was born on the 5th of October 1703 at East (now South) Windsor, Connecticut . His earliest known ancestor was Richard Edwards , Welsh by birth, a London clergyman in Elizabeth's reign. His father Timothy Edwards (1669-1758), son of a prosperous merchant of Hartford , had graduated at Harvard, was minister at East Windsor , and eked out his salary by tutoring boys for college. His mother, a daughter of the Rev. Solomon Stoddard, of Northampton , Mass., seems to have been a woman of unusual mental gifts and independence of character. Jonathan , the only son, was the fifth of eleven children. The boy was trained for college by his father and by his elder sisters, who all received an excellent education. When ten years old he wrote a semi-humorous tract on the immateriality of the soul; he was interested in natural history, and at the age of twelve wrote a remarkable essay on the habits of the " flying spider." He entered Yale College in 1716, and in the following year became acquainted with Locke's Essay

After just weeks on the job, he died from smallpox brought on by an inoculation to protect him from the disease. Jonathan Edwards and his wife had eleven children. He spent one hour each night in conversation and instruction with his family. His daughter Jerusha was engaged to David Brainerd when he died of tuberculosis. Edwards' two most famous literary works are The Life and Diary of David Brainerd (1749) and Freedom of the Will (1754). Edwards is buried in Princeton, New Jersey.

Edwards, Jonathan
Edwards, Jonathan (1703-1758), third president of Princeton for a brief period in 1758, was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, where his father was pastor. The only son in a family of eleven children, he entered Yale when he was not yet thirteen and graduated four years later at the head of his class. He studied theology, preached in a Presbyterian pulpit in New York, and in 1724 returned to Yale as tutor for two years, the second year as senior tutor and virtual head of the college, the rectorship then being vacant. In 1728 he succeeded his maternal grandfather as pastor at Northampton, Massachusetts, where his preaching brought remarkable religious revivals. But he alienated many of his congregation in 1748 by his proposal to depart from his grandfather's policy of encouraging all baptized persons to partake of Communion and instead to admit to this sacrament only those who gave satisfactory evidence of being truly converted. He was dismissed in 1750. He moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, then a frontier settlement, where he ministered to a tiny congregation and served as missionary to the Housatonic Indians. There, having more time for study and writing, he completed his celebrated work, The Freedom of the Will.

One of the best accounts of the beginnings of the Great Awakening was written by Edwards in 1736. He entitled it:
A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God
We have reproduced A Faithful Narrative here in its entirety, believing that it is one of the most helpful pieces ever written to understand both the nature of true revival and of genuine conversion.
Following the Great Awakening Edwards wrote one of his greatest masterpieces Religious Affections. In it Edwards detailed what he believed were and were not signs of those who had been truly converted. In this day of prolific false conversion, we believe it is critical to re-examine the words of Edwards regarding this all important subject. You may download the entire text of Religious Affections by clicking on the pdf icon below.
