Russell Edson was born in Connecticut in 1935 and currently resides there with his wife, Frances. Edson, who has jokingly called himself "Little Mr. Prose Poem," is often considered the foremost writer of prose poetry in America, having written exclusively in that form before it became fashionable.
In a forthcoming study of the American prose poem, Michel Delville suggests that one of Edson's typical "recipes" for his prose poems involves a modern everyman who suddenly tumbles into an alternative reality in which he loses control over himself, sometimes to the point of being irremediably absorbedboth figuratively and literallyby his immediate and, most often, domestic everyday environment.. Constantly fusing and confusing the banal and the bizarre, Edson delights in having a seemingly innocuous situation undergo the most unlikely and uncanny metamorphoses. . . .. Reclusive by nature, Edson has still managed to publish eleven books of prose poems and one novel

Amalgamation of Local 47 and 767
by Marl Young
(Reprinted from Article that appeared inOverture March,1999)
She asked me if the fact that the Musicians Unions were segregated contributed to the scarcity of blacks in the industry. It certainly could have been a contributing factor in that all the contracts for employment of musicians in the broadcast and motion picture studios were negotiated by the then all-white union, Local 47. The black union, Local 767, merely adopted the scales negotiated by Local 47, if and when a black musician got a studio call. Prior to this, meetings of black and white musicians were held in halls and private homes to discuss the matter of amalgamation. Black musicians Collette, Freeman, Douglass, McDavid, John Ewing, Jimmy Cheatham, Anderson and others, joined by such white musicians as George Kast, Gail Robinson, Seymour Sheklow, Roger Segure, Joe Eger, Henry and Esther Roth, Erica Keen, Emma Hardy Hill, and with the support of Josephine Baker, made concerted efforts to arouse public interest in this fight. In 1951, as the amalgamation effort developed, this group was joined by, among others, Benny Carter, Estelle Edson, Russell McDavid, Joe Mullendore, Mike Ortiz, Allen Robinson, Al Woodbury and myself. Musicians from this interracial group held regular and frequent meetings and were responsible for devising the strategy and approach necessary to achieve our goal. By mid-summer of 1951, amalgamation was the number one issue at the monthly Local 767 meetings, and there was always a quorum.

Russell Edson
is widely considered to be America's leading author of prose poetry, a form he has practiced for more than four decades. "an American master, Surrealist comic genius, and magician of metaphor and imagination." - Academy of American Poets on Poets.org His poems, praised for wit, wordplay, and wild originality, typically plunge ordinary individuals into bizarre situations. "An Edson prose poem, however amusing and ridiculoushowever jokelikeit may be, is disturbing…. Laughter never blunts the edges of Edson's elegantly maculate conceptions." - "Booklist" Edson's nineteen volumes of poetry include "The Tormented Mirror" (2001), "The Tunnel: Selected Poems" (1994), "The Wounded Breakfast" (1985), "The Intuitive Journey and Other Works" (1976), "The Clam Theater" (1973), and "The Very Thing That Happens" (1964). Sydney Lea is celebrated for plainspoken narrative poetry that presents the lives and voices of ordinary people. "Ghost Pain" (2005), his newest collection, explores the hearts and private miseries of rural New Englanders, and features the Pushcart Prize-winning poem, "Wonder: Red Beans and Ricely."

The Changeling Analysis
Author: poem of Russell Edson Type: poem Views:
A man had a son who was an anvil. And then sometimes
he was an automobile tire.
I do wish you would sit still, said the father.
Sometimes his son was a rock.
I realize that you have quite lost boundary, where no
excess seems excessive, nor to where poverty roots hunger to
need. But should you allow time to embrace you to its bosom
of dust, that velvet sleep, then were you served even beyond your need; and desire in sate was properly spilling from its borders, said the father. Then his son became the corner of a room. Don't don't, cried the father. And then his son became a floorboard. Don't don't, the moon falls there and curdles your wits into the grain of the wood, cried the father. What shall I do? screamed his son. Sit until time embraces you into the bosom of its velvet quiet, cried the father.

Hribal, Lan Samantha Chang, Robert Boswell, Peter Turchi) A great deal of literary fiction wears a straight face, as if "literature" demands seriousness; other fiction prizes irony and cleverness above deep or sincere feeling. Panelists will discuss the value of allowing a single work of fiction a wide emotional range, from the comic to the tragic, if that's what's called for. Masterful examples will demonstrate how some of the fiction we value most leads the reader into a world as sadly funny and as hysterically sad as the one we live in.
