Executive summary: Castle Rackrent Mr. Edgeworth encouraged his daughter's literary instincts. It has been the fashion to regard his influence over Maria's work as altogether deplorable, but against the disadvantages arising from his interference must be weighed the stimulus she undoubtedly derived from his powerful mind., Her first publication was a plea for female education, Letters to Literary Ladies (1795), and in 1796 appeared the collection of stories known as The Parent's Assistant , an unpromising title which was not chosen by the author. The stories had been submitted as they were written to the juvenile critics of the Edgeworth nursery. They were therefore children's stories for children, even though the morals were Mr. Edgeworth's. In 1798 Mr. Edgeworth's fourth marriage threatened the family harmony, but Maria soon became a close friend of her stepmother. Practical Education (2 volumes, 1798) was written in conjunction with her father, who also collaborated with her in the

Maria Edgeworth
Maria Edgeworth was born in 1768, the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, an inventive Anglo-Irish landowner, and his first wife, Anna Maria Elers. After the death of his first wife, Richard Edgeworth married three more times, producing a family of twenty-two children. Maria was educated in England until the age of fourteen, and after she came back to live in Edgeworthstown, County Longford, her life became considerably influenced by the educational and scientific interests of her father, who encouraged her writing and whom she assisted in his writing and in managing the estate. A writer of considerable reputation, both literary and moral, her work was admired by many of the significant literary figures of her day, most notably by Sir Walter Scott, who cited her work as a major influence on his books. A pioneer of both the regional and historical novel (though she liked to refer to her books as 'tales', considering 'novels' morally suspect) she was commercially very successful. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800) was also her first Irish tale. The next such tale was Ennui (1809), after which came The Absentee, which began life as an unstaged play and was then published (in prose) in Tales of Fashionable Life (1812), as were several of her other stories. They were followed in 1817 by the last of her Irish tales, Ormond. Edgeworth wrote widely, her other work including a defence of women's education in Letters for Literary Ladies (1795), Practical Education (1798) which she wrote with her father, stories for and about children, and novels of manners such as Belinda (1801), Leonora (1806), Patronage (1814) and Helen (1834).

This new 12-volume edition of the major works of Maria Edgeworth makes available one of the most important but most neglected of women writers in English. Born in England in 1768 of an English mother and an Anglo-Irish father, Edgeworth lived from the age of 14 on her father's estate in the Irish Midlands. She was introduced by her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, inventor, educationalist and Enlightenment polymath, to a remarkable range of books and current ideas. Her sparkling comedies of high-life English manners influenced Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott. Her four remarkable Irish tales, beginning with

  • Maria Edgeworth 1768-1849
Anglo-Irish novelist, short story writer, dramatist, and educational essayist.
    INTRODUCTION
Edgeworth contributed notably to the development of the English novel of manners. Her vivid fiction advanced a tradition that began with Fanny Burney and reached its finest expression in Jane Austen. Although her reputation has suffered from inevitable comparisons to her younger contemporary Austen, literary historians recognize Edgeworth as an important innovator in this genre. Additionally, she is known as the author of popular children's fiction and a well-regarded volume addressing childrearing and educational theory.
    Biographical Information
Edgeworth was born to the educator, inventor, and politician Richard Lovell Edgeworth and his first wife. Richard Edgeworth eventually married four times and fathered twenty-two children. As the eldest daughter, Edgeworth left school at the age of fifteen to oversee the care and education of her many siblings; her first children's stories were written to entertain them. She served as her father's secretary as well, and collaborated with him on several nonfiction works, most notably the essays on childrearing collected in Practical Education (1798). This volume was followed by children's stories, novels of manners, and satirical short stories of society life. Edgeworth herself lived quietly, residing quietly on her family's estate until her death at age eighty-one.
