Raney by Clyde Edgerton
When Maggie of Maggie Reads quoted the Raleigh News and Observer , which said that the novelist Clyde Edgerton was "the love child of Dave Barry and Flannery O'Connor," I quickly placed a reserve for Raney , his first novel. I expected something strangely humorous. I was not disappointed.
An engagement announcement from the Hansen County Pilot on the opening page of the novel tells us that Raney is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman, the owner of a combination bait shop and grocery and a housewife. Raney is to marry Charles C. Shepherd at the Bethel Baptist Church. Charles is the assistant librarian at the Listre Community College and is full of liberal ideas that are going to shock his Bethel Free Will Baptist bride's world.
Charles had introduced himself to Raney at a Christmas dinner for faculty at the college. She had sung for the event, and he asked her to sing with him and his banjo. They fell in love without ever talking about their deeply set beliefs.
What we read is Raney's closely kept diary, in which she tells us of the wedding and their first year of marriage. You can bet she never intends anyone else to see it. Nearly every page includes an account of humorous incident, like Charles's reluctance to eat okra or his infuriating tendency to prefer reading books to visiting with her folks, but the novel is really very serious. It would be a great book discussion selection. Look for it in your library.

It is precisely this moralism and its negative witness that Clyde Edgerton explores in his satiric novel, Where Trouble Sleeps (1997).1 The events of the novel center around Jack Umstead, a quick-witted con-man who has wandered into town and who is awaiting his chance to steal the lightning-and-thunder-fearing Blaine sisters' fortune. However, Umstead's biggest impact on the small, Southern town of Listre occurs in the meantime. Unknowingly and in spite of his true intentions, he forces the self-reflection of a few members of Listre Baptist Church, in essence redeeming them from their own sense of moral superiority by reminding them of the wonders of grace.

Clyde Edgerton - laughing and crying together
One of the interesting aspects of American literature is the genre called "Southern Writers." Say the phrase and one immediately thinks of Faulkner, Williams, Wolfe, Welty, Morris, Styron and, increasingly Clyde Edgerton. There is no similar classification of "Midwestern Writers," even though the midwest can claim Hemingway, Lewis, Bromfield, Hecht and Sandburg. No "Eastern Writers" at all, and no "Western Writers" unless we list those who wrote about cowboy themes. So, what is it about the Southern writers that makes them so distinct a class? I have been thinking about that since finishing Raney, Clyde Edgerton's first novel about a young southern woman, Raney Bell, who married an Atlantan named Charles C. Shepherd. Except for their interest in country music, they could hardly be more diverse. Raney is a country girl from Bethel, North Carolina, daughter of the owner of a country store, a Free Will Baptist, and attended the local community college. Charles, on the other hand, is from a big southern city. College trained, son of a college professor and a public school teacher, a nominal Episcopalian. Raney likes to "visit." Charles likes to read. Raney loves it when friends drop in without warning, Charles hates it. The differences extend to smaller things, too. Raney likes to fill up the sink and wash all the dishes in the same water. Charles refuses to wash his dishes in what he calls "dirty water," so he washes them under a running faucet, which, according to Raney, wastes water, a precious resource. Charles, as it turns out, likes to read Playboy and Penthouse; Raney is aghast that such publications exist at all, let alone hidden in her house. Charles's best friend is black, and Raney, answering Charles contention that "skin color doesn't make any difference," replies, "I thought of all the years the colored people around Bethel had lived in real low conditions and had never amounted to anything and I figured that if Charles thought skin color didn't make any difference, then he must be blind."

Clyde Edgerton - 1944 Durham By Chris R. I. Biography Clyde Edgerton is a North Carolina author who has written many famous novels. They are: Raney Walking Across Egypt The Floatplane Notebooks Killer Diller In Memory of Junior Redeye and Where Trouble Sleeps Edgerton was born on May 20, 1944 in Durham North Carolina. He lived near his 23 aunts and uncles who loved to tell him stories. These experiences are some of the things that got Edgerton interested in writing. He had a good childhood. He was very popular in his community due to his outgoing personality and good sense of humor. Not many people would have guessed that Clyde would have become an author, many people thought he would grow up to play baseball or be a hunter. Edgerton went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After reading A Farewell to Arms Edgerton wanted nothing more than to be an English teacher so he could share his excitement for such literature with students. Edgerton was in the Air Force ROTC program where he learned to fly small planes. After graduation in 1966, he was offered to join the United States Air Force. He took the offer and for the next 4 years he served on active duty flying fighter planes. He flew in the U.S., Korea, and Japan. When Edgerton finished in the Air Force, he decided to go back to college and get his masters degree before starting his career as an English teacher. After getting his degree, he became an English teacher at his old high school. All of the students loved Edgerton because he brought the literature that he read to them to life. His success inspired him to return to the University and to begin a doctoral program. In graduate school, Edgerton met Susan Ketchin who was another graduate student in English education. They both loved the stories of Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Conner. Then in 1975, they were married in his home church, Bethesda Baptist.

Last week I went to the library to return some books. I had nothing in mind to check out. So I said to myself, "I'll walk through the stacks and see what catches my eye." I like doing this, I find some good books this way. Here's what caught me that day. Redeye by Clyde Edgerton . I was pretty much hooked by this drawing on the cover by Laura Levine. Nice eh?
Looking in the jacket I read that Clyde is from NC. Cool. I never read local authors. Don't know why. I read Redeye in about two days. It takes place in south west Colorado around what in real life is now known as Mesa Verde (which Sarah and I visited a few years ago). It's set in the late 1800's. Anyhow it's a great read. I'm not so good a giving synopses, so I won't bother (maybe this is something I'll work on). Just get it and read it. You'll be glad you did.
Okay now I am reading Clyde's first book, Raney. It is set in 1975 in a small NC rural town. Not unlike where I grew up. Well maybe a little smaller. Let me tell you I can relate to so much of this book that it's scary. I found myself laughing out loud before I was on page 10. There are issues of race, ignorance, religion, naivete, marriage and all sorts of things. It is humorous and serious both. Being raised in the South I have experienced and heard much of what is written here, most of it from my own family or close neighbors and friends.

Lunch at the Piccadilly
in Greenville, North Carolina Few writers are able to create outstanding fiction and do a great road show. Clyde Edgerton can. He brings everything he's got to his performances both literary and on stage. Those who are fortunate enough to attend a "reading" by Edgerton frequently find themselves doubled over in laughter and wiping tears from their eyes at his quick wit, and tapping their feet to his singing and guitar playing. His band, the Rank Strangers, plays classic Edgerton-composed tunes like "The Safety Patrol Song" and "Fat From Shame" while he reads excerpts from his novels. It's truly a sight to behold. Those who get the chance often come early and stay late when Edgerton's in town. Edgerton is a southern constant. In 1985, when he published his first novel
