E. R. Eddison
The clearest forerunner of Tolkien , who recognized his cracked literary genius but disliked the man intensely. Although William Morris was the first to invent a completely made-up medieval fantasy world, and Dunsany was the first to populate these worlds with gods, monsters, and mountains of made-up proper nouns, it was the profoundly scholarly Eddison who brought to the genre detailed geographies, complex historical back-stories, epic violence, and an obsession with linguistics - Eddison actually expects you understand his numerous Latin and Greek quotes, not to mention his shockingly impenetrable Shakespearean English. Put this all together, and Tolkien's work seems like an incremental (if utterly brilliant) step forward. It's possible that Eddison was a little influenced by earlier pulp fiction writers, and in particular his Lessingham character resembles Burrough's John Carter. But basically, he's completely unique. Eddison was a slow writer, so in addition to the two books reviewed here, there are just two more, all set in the same fantasy world: 1938's A Fish Dinner In Memison , and The Mezentian Gate

Sir Edward Burne-Jones E.R. Eddison
Eric Rucker Eddison (1882-1945), born in Yorkshire, was a slender man of 5'10" and a lifelong and eventually high-ranking British civil servant. Working in the Board of Trade from 1906, he distinguished himself in his bureaucratic work to the extent that he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1924, Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1929, and reached the rank of Deputy Comptroller-General of Overseas Trade before retiring in 1937 to a new home in Marlborough, Wiltshire. There he lived with his wife and married daughter until his death in 1945. Eddison began writing stories when he was 10. His interest in Norse sagas led him to study Icelandic so he could read them in the original. At Oxford he became enthralled with Homer and Sappho, and also became fluent in Greek, Latin and French. Besides his interests in animals and wildlife, music, ballet, the theatre and art (he once owned a Matisse) he was also an avid mountaineer. Eddison was a close friend of C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, and knew J.R.R. Tolkien. In 1916, Eddison edited and privately printed the works of a close friend: Poems, Letters, and Memories of Philip Sidney Nairn

68. My Book List

http://www.eblong.com/zarf/bookscan/booklist.html
My Book List
This page is generated from my library database, which I generated with a bar-code scanner (with some help from the Web). Yes, I really own all these books. Have I read them all? The vast majority, certainly. In this list, there are probably ten or twenty books that I don't ever intend to read. (Don't ask why I own them.) Another ten, perhaps, are books that I intend to read someday, but have never been in the right mood to pick up. And then there are recent purchases (which may not even be on this list yet). The recent-purchase pile is usually one or two books, but it can reach a height of ten or even twenty if I find a juicy new used-book store or go to a con. Then it shrinks. Any book still unread after a month, if not sooner, qualifies as "read-someday". Do I ever get rid of books? Rarely. I have a separate list of the 15 books I have sold or given away. (Please don't write and ask if you can buy books from me. The answer is generally "Sorry, no".) Do I remember what's in all of these books? Hell no. Did I enjoy these books? Mostly, yes. I don't have reviews of my collection, but I have written brief comments about the most recent acquisitions.

THE WORM OUROBOROS
by E. R. Eddison
Buy this book at Amazon Contents Start Reading The Worm Ourorobos is second only to the Lord of the Rings in the pantheon of 20th century English fantasy. E.R. Eddison, who moved in the same literary circles as Tolkien, was praised by Tolkien as "The greatest and most convincing writer of 'invented worlds' that I have read". The Worm Ourorbos was originally published in a very limited and now very rare edition in 1922 (a used first edition recently listed for $3,750). Eddison wrote three sequels set in roughly the same universe, but none of them have the sustained pacing and invention of Ouroboros Before diving in, there are a few things to be aware of. The rich language Eddison uses is based on Tudor and Jacobean English, with some modern anachronisms; it may take some getting used to, and occasionally a trip to the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary . The narrator, one Lessingham, who appears in a very brief framing sequence, disappears a few dozen pages in. The book is set on Mercury; however, keep in mind this is not science fiction, so this is not literally the planet Mercury. Eddison on several occasions in the body of the book calls the world 'Middle Earth', and the setting is recognizably the

The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison
I made it through and I found the last two-thirds progressed much more quickly, and were more involving, than the first 150 or so pages. I'm sure this has a lot to do with the fact that after ambling lazily until that point, I finished the rest in only a couple of sittings.
It also helped that the book moved from its lengthy scene setting, through a protracted and vaguely pointless quest sequence, and onto the real warfare and battles. I found myself very caught up in these later scenes, genuinely wanting the Demons to kick the Witches the hell out Demonland. I was quite upset when Brandoch Daha's palace at Krothering was comprehensibly trashed by the drunken, objectionable Witches, and I almost cheered when Lady Mevrian escaped the foul attentions of Lord Corinius. In order to describe one of the huge battles, Eddison employs a literary device of delayed narrative, and introduces a couple of humble, country folk to be the recipient of the story. These are, I think, the only non-noble characters who get an identity and a purpose other than being slain in combat.
Eddison is straightforward in his characterisation. Although the Witches are described in just such gorgeous detail as the Demons, they are just a little less perfect all around, and a little too ready to intrigue. The Demon court stands for all that is civilised, august, just, honourable, virtuous, beautiful, chivalrous, lofty, intelligent, benevolent etc, and its lords are correspondingly inhumanly good. They are not much individualised, although Brandoch Daha has a good line in cynical, drawling wit, like a knightly Scarlet Pimpernel. The Witches, in contrast, backstab, fight, scheme, drink and womanise, and are almost indistinguishable from each other. Corvus drinks but Corvinius doesn't, or perhaps it's the other way round? They may temporarily get the upper hand, but this is just to allow them the opportunity to prove their unworthiness by acts of rapine and looting, thereby rendering their eventual defeat and destruction all the more satisfactory.

A Fish Dinner in Memison
E.R. Eddison
Review date: 22/6/2002
Publisher: Del Rey, 1978
Published: 1941 The second of Eddison's Zimianvian trilogy is the most difficult of his novels to read, though it is well worth the effort. It has much more to do with the aims of his writing than Mistress of Mistresses , where the hinds about what is being done can easily be ignored, and the unfinished and in many parts skeletal nature of The Mezentian Gate make the underlying ideas far more obvious. The trilogy as a whole has an extremely unusual and rather disconcerting structure, in that it is more or less in reverse chronological order, with much overlap between the events in the second and third novel (the central event which provides the title here also occurs in The Mezentian Gate The fact that the opening chapter contains phrases in French, Italian, Greek and Latin might put a fair number of readers off, but more difficult in actuality is not so much Eddison's theme (time and eternity) as what he wants to say about it. (Eternity is also the theme of Eddison's less obviously related and most famous novel, The Worm Ouroboros , as the worm is a symbol for the concept.) The philosophical introduction won't clarify matters for anyone who hasn't read at least one of the novels in the trilogy already. Eddison could have written an allegorical fantasy, which would have been more familiar as a form to many readers of the genre, but he felt that it would be too easy to do this and would diminish his subject; instead of personifying eternity, he wanted to use all his characters to hint at different aspects of his ideas about time, in the same way that he felt that real world individuals did.

I read this originally as a teenager, and upon rereading, it is still just as good. It has many flaws, including the clumsy introductory section, but I love the characterizations, archaic language, the descriptions, and the swashbuckling action.
Finding this inspired me to design and post my own hardcover printed version of The Worm here on lulu.com:
