Conclusion: Worth Reading I suppose these are books that could be held up as the cannoncial example of Bad Fantasy. Both five volume series contain utterly predictable epic quests that are so full of bad cliches it isn't funny. I won't even bother telling you what they are about. They seemed to be big sellers though and obviously since I bought the second series in hardcover, I must have liked them pretty well at the time. I guess I attribute my lack of disgust at these books to a couple of factors. First, this is the ultimate mind candy. You simply do not have to engage a single brain cell to read these books, even if you haven't read them before. Thus they are perfect for when you are suffering from exactly the sort of malaise I've been. And despite being two five volume series, they are very fast reading. I think I re-read the first five books in like two days without really trying. Another thing I sort of like are the characters. Not all of them mind you, but some of them. Silk for one, the Drasnian spy who is the ultimate smooth operator. I've always liked characters such as him, I think because secretly that's what I wanted to be. When I was a kid, I loved those "Great Brain" books by John D. Fitzgerald because I imagined myself a smooth operator like young blackmailer Tom. Heck, I still like those books! I like the Stainless Steel Rat books for the same reason. This is pure escapism, imagining yourself the ultra-competent hero, but one who is a smart ass and rogue at the same time. Other characters struck me for similar reasons. And Eddings is able to use the differences between his stereotypical motley crew to some humorous effect.

PAWN OF PROPHECY By David Eddings
The Belgariad #1. Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgrath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe. That was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the man without a shadow had haunted him for years. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved, but did not truly know. For yet a little while and his dreams of innocence remained safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while...thus begins The Belgariad, an epic fantasy of immense scope set against a history of 7000 years. It tells of the struggles between ancient Gods and mighty Kings, and of men in strange lands facing fated events, all bound by a prophecy that must be fulfilled. Read by Camereon Beierle. 10.5 Hrs.

Introduction
Eddings is the creator of two epic fantasy worlds, as well as a couple of random books. The first cycle, "The Belgariad" (and sequels), is a classic good versus evil quest-epic in which the gods use human avatars to do their bidding. The essence of the battle is between two opposing destinies that meet at critical points in time to determine which destiny will reign supreme. Even the gods are only supporters of one destiny or another. The plots are mostly preordained, but it's the characters that really matter. Eddings has a flair for both main and secondary characters, painting them in a few bold strokes and bringing them to life through carefully chosen interactions with each other. Eddings' world-building talent is a little less strong: for all his wonderful variety in landscapes, he lacks some depth in this area. Nonetheless, his fans forgive him because he can still tell a rioting good story. The world of "The Elenium" has several general similarities to the first one, especially in the overall concept behind it. Once again, good and evil are polarized and one hero is fated to fight for good. But this hero is Sparhawk, a man far less innocent than Gariad. This world has a more sarcastic edge to it, and seems more mature in both the character development and the world description. Not everything is black and white, nor is every character clearly on one side or the other. For those who have outgrown the elegant simplicity of "The Belgariad", this makes a good choice. The only drawback to this world is that it behaves more like an RPG than the earlier one, or does so to the same extent without equal justification. Try to guess who is the GM....

Doug Eddings thinks that David Wells eats to much
After being ejected from the game, David Wells had some interesting things to say about umpire Doug Eddings.
As seen at the fanhouse

the umpire "rubbed his belly" as if to call Wells "fat."
Said Wells: "I thought (Thompson's) foot was on (the bag). Replay shows it did and that's where the frustration comes out ... I understand they're trying to do their job as well. You get riled up. I got riled up. I said, 'You didn't miss one, you missed two.' Things started heating up and he was over there chirping and chirping and he tossed me out. Then he made a gesture ... that to me is stepping over the line. I take it personally."
"That's false. I would never ..." Eddings told the Associated Press.
First of all, David Wells should expect people to call him fat, secondly... Maybe DW should contact Angel fans and invest in one of these shirts:

ELCOME , O wandering netsurfer to the Eddings Page , the main jumping-off point for information relating to David Eddings on the World Wide Web. Out Now: The Redemption of Althalus I have recently received a message from HarperCollins (Eddings' UK publisher) that the latest book has been released on 3 rd July, 2000. There is a website which is nicely done Now me, I'm far more interested in the content which sounds very interesting indeed (taking from the nice message sent by Leeza Morley, one of the good folks at HarperCollins UK):
Althalus - burglar, armed robber and occasional murderer - is commissioned to steal a book by a mysterious cloak stranger named Ghend. Althalus sets off to the House at the End of the World where the book is set - after stealing Ghend's cloak; after all, winter is coming on. At the House at the End of the World, in the same room as the book Ghend described, he finds a talking cat. What he can't find once he's in the house is the door by which he entered. By the time he manages to escape - with the cat, Emerald, in the hood of his (Ghend's) cloak - Althalus can read. He's read the Book of Deiwos, and discovered a tool mightier than the blunt instrument he once used to disable his victims. But there is another Book, written by the god Daeva who is the evil brother of Deiwos, and who is trying to unmake the world. Emerald is in fact the sister of the two conflicting gods, and her intention is to use Althalus to stop Daeva returning all of them to primordial chaos. Althalus will teach her what she needs to know, which is how to lie, cheat and steal - 'Whatever works,' Emerald reflects - and in return she, more amazingly, will teach Althalus truth, justice and mortality.
