Bob Dylan was a lot more than a singer of protest songs. While that's how he started, he soon revealed a lyrical and musical talent that were far more developed than in any other folk-singer of his or any previous generation.
Bob Dylan was the single most influential musician of the 1960s. He started the fire. He turned music into a form of mass communication. He galvanized a generation through folk songs that became anthems. Then he embraced rock music and re-defined it as a genre of metaphysical, free-form compositions. Then he turned his back to rock music and delved into country-rock. The entire world of rock music followed his every step. When Dylan went electric, everybody went electric. When Dylan went country, everybody did. His legacy is monumental. Blowin' In The Wind (published in may 1962 but released on record only in 1963) created the epitome of the finger-pointing protest song. A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall (1962) coined a new kind of folk ballad, which was prophetic, visionary and apocalyptic, in the vein of poets such as William Blake.

The grandchild of Jewish-Russian immigrants, Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman, on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, where his father, Abe, worked for the Standard Oil Company. In 1947, the Zimmerman family moved to the small town of Hibbing, where an unexceptional childhood did little to hint at the brilliance to come. Robert started writing poems around the age of ten, and taught himself rudimentary piano and guitar in his early teens.

According to the 1959 Hibbing high school yearbook, his goal was "to join Little Richard The young Zimmerman left Hibbing for Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1959. The sights and sounds of the big city opened new vistas for him, and he began to trace contemporary rock and roll back to its roots, listening to the work of country, rock, and folk pioneers like

Robert Maxwell Todd Haynes’s Dylan project is a biopic starring six people as Bob Dylan , or different incarnations of Bob Dylan, including a 13-year-old African-American boy, Marcus Carl Franklin , and an Australian woman, Cate Blanchett . It’s a biopic with a title that takes it name from one of the most obscure titles in the Dylan canon, a song available only as a bootleg, called “I’m Not There.” As I arrived at the set outside Montreal and pulled into a mud-swamped parking lot, disembarking and moving toward the great white light, I passed through the recreated past — namely the ’60s and ’70s. There was a sign for Folk City, for instance, and a fake cover for “Bringing It All Back Home,” a mock-up with the actress Cate Blanchett on it. There was a part of a bedroom from the ’70s and, on a nearby stand, a copy of “Les Illuminations,” by Arthur Rimbaud, the artist who seems to have inspired Dylan in his early days nearly as much as he inspired Todd Haynes. The book, the filmgoer will learn, shows up in a scene involving the ’70s superstar Dylan, a kind of jerk Dylan, played by

The Weisman Art Museum will present the exhibition Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966 from February 3 through April 29, 2007. This will be the only presentation of this national traveling exhibition in the Upper Midwest. Because of the strong interest in Dylan among music listeners of many generations and because of the singer’s Minnesota youth, the exhibition will draw visitors from throughout the region.
Bob Dylan
Few figures in the history of American popular music have reached the status of Bob Dylan. Scholars have called him “the Shakespeare of our time.” That accolade acknowledges not only his sophisticated play with language but also the vast quantity of his artistic work (forty-four recorded albums; several literary works, many films); the superb quality and complexity of his music, assuring that it is a legacy for the ages; and his exploration of significant themes on the human condition: power, greed, injustice, war, love, loss, and death. That this remarkable artist—one of the major twentieth-century artists in any medium—emerged from Minnesota has never been fully explored. The Weisman’s presentation of Bob Dylan’s American Journey aims to explore Dylan’s Minnesota connections as well as his significance to American and world musics and cultures.
As the man who showed the world that popular music could be classified as art, Dylan has created a distinctly American body of work to match the legacies of Walt Whitman, Louis Armstrong, and his early musical hero, Woody Guthrie. Many people have declared Dylan’s lyrics to be poetry. His songs also unearth and revitalize the American folk and blues tradition, serving as a key link in the chain that extends from Southern work songs, blues and Anglo-American ballads to the many contemporary singer-songwriters for whom Dylan is a main influence. But Dylan’s story is not simply that of a musical evolution. As a public figure and artistic innovator, he has taken and chronicled a journey emblematic of modern America’s own development.

In 2004, a Newsweek magazine article called Bob Dylan "the most influential cultural figure now alive," and with good reason. He has released more than forty albums in the last four decades, and created some of the most memorable anthems of the twentieth century, classics such as "The Times They Are A-Changin," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Blowin' in the Wind." While Dylan's place in the pantheon of American musicians is cemented, there is one question that has confounded music and literary critics for the entirety of Dylan's career: Should Bob Dylan be considered a songwriter or a poet? Dylan was asked that very question at a press conference in 1965, when he famously said, "I think of myself more as a song-and-dance man." The debate has raged on ever since, and even intensified in 2004, when Internet rumors swirled about Dylan's nomination for a Nobel Prize in Literature, and five well-hyped books were released almost simultaneously:
