I've been through a period of negotiations which in the end turned out to be unsuccessful. This has two consequences. One is that Dylanchords, as one central storehouse for chords and lyrics to Dylan's songs, no longer exists. The other, more positive one, is that I no longer have to be cautious about not jeopardizing a possible future deal, since there will be none. After many years of bringing you the word of Bob, the time has come where I need to call upon you for assistance. As my ISP has recently raised their rates, I am hoping to find a fellow F.O.B. who may have access to a web server that can host The Book of Bob . This would require being able to map my domain name (SlopBucket.com), as well as allocate a few hundred gig of space. And lastly, my preference would be a Linux/Unix host. Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-conscious narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notions that in order to perform, a singer had to have a conventionally good voice, thereby redefining the role of vocalist in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. And that just touches on the tip of his achievements. Dylan's force was evident during his height of popularity in the '60s the Beatles Early in 1978, Dylan set out on another extensive tour, this time backed by a band that resembled a Las Vegas lounge band. The group was featured on the 1978 album Street Legal and the 1979 live album At Budokan. At the conclusion of the tour in late 1978, Dylan announced that he was a born-again Christian, and he launched a series of Christian albums that following summer with Slow Train Coming. Though the reviews were mixed, the album was a success, peaking at number three and going platinum. His supporting tour for Slow Train Coming featured only his new religious material, much to the bafflement of his long-term fans. Two other religious albums Saved (1980) and Shot of Love (1981) followed, both to poor reviews. In 1982, Dylan traveled to Israel, sparking rumors that his conversion to Christianity was short-lived. He returned to secular recording with 1983's Infidels, which was greeted with favorable reviews.

Dylan quickly became a regular feature in Greenwich Village clubs and coffeehouses. Critical attention began to accumulate, and by 1961 he was signed to Columbia Records, releasing his eponymous debut in 1962. The record was primarily composed of versions of folk and blues standards, the singer lacking the confidence to include more than two of his own original songs, but that had changed by the following release, 1963's The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan . Dylan had begun to get involved in the Civil Rights Movement, reflected in songs such as Blowin' in the Wind and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall , both of which went on to become popular anthems for the movement. This direction was continued with 1964's

      Bob Dylan
Singer / Songwriter Born: 24 May 1941 Birthplace: Duluth, Minnesota Best known as: Singer of "Like a Rolling Stone" Name at birth: Robert Allen Zimmerman Bob Dylan is one of the towering figures of late 20th century popular music, responsible for such songs as "All Along The Watchtower" (made into a hit by Jimi Hendrix ), "Like a Rolling Stone," "Tangled Up in Blue," "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and "Lay Lady Lay." Dylan has been recording and performing since 1962, mixing folk, country, blues and rock and sometimes startling his fans but almost always pleasing the critics. Although Dylan was an influential pop figure during the youth movement of the 1960s, his first number one hit, "Knocking on Heaven's Door," didn't come until 1973. During the '80s he toured extensively, and in the '90s his songs found a new audience and more acclaim from the music industry: in 1991 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Grammy; his 1997 album Time Out of Mind won three Grammys; and in 2001 Dylan won an Oscar for "Things Have Changed," from the movie

Swans Commentary swans.com October 10, 2005 Bob Dylan's Chronicles Volume One by Louis Proyect Book Review Dylan, Bob: Chronicles Volume One, Simon and Schuster, New York, 2004, ISBN 0-7432-2815-2, 293 pages, $14.00 (paperback) (Swans - October 10, 2005) As accustomed as we have become to the hyping of Bob Dylan over the years, it might come as a surprise to discover that volume one of Chronicles , now available in paperback, deserves all the accolades it has received. Named as one of the best books of 2004 by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the London Guardian and other prestigious newspapers and magazines, it demonstrates that Dylan still has enormous talents although arguably singing and songwriting are no longer among them. With the arrival of the paperback version of Chronicles and Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home on PBS this year, it is a good opportunity to reevaluate this seminal figure of the 1960s. Given Dylan's propensity for superciliousness, irony and evasion (bred no doubt by early encounters with a hostile and ignorant press,) Chronicles is a good place to start since it is marked by a gentle wit, graciousness and warmth.

Bob Dylan Following his graduation in 1959, he began studying art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While at college, he started performing folk songs at coffeehouses under the name Bob Dylan, taking his last name from the poet Dylan Thomas. Already inspired by Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie, Dylan began listening to blues while at college, and the genre weaved its way into his music. Dylan spent the summer of 1960 in Denver, where he met bluesman Jesse Fuller, the inspiration behind the songwriter's signature harmonica rack and guitar. By the time he returned to Minneapolis in the fall, he had grown substantially as a performer and was determined to become a professional musician. Dylan made his way to New York City in January of 1961, immediately making a substantial impression on the folk community of Greenwich Village. He began visiting his idol Woody Guthrie in the hospital, where he was slowly dying from Huntington's chorea. Dylan also began performing in coffeehouses, and his rough charisma won him a significant following. Over the course of the year, Dylan began to write a large batch of original tunes, many of which were political protest songs in the vein of his Greenwich contemporaries. These songs were showcased on his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Before its release, Freewheelin' went through several incarnations.
