Januar 1921 in Konolfingen, einem Schweizer Dorf im Kanton Bern, geboren. Sein Vater war protestantischer Pfarrer des Dorfes. Drei Jahre spaeter kam seine Schwester Vroni zur Welt. 1935 zog die Familie nach Bern um. Vermutlich waren finanzielle Gruende der Anlass dazu. Die Weltwirtschaftskrise machte sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt auch in der Schweiz bemerkbar und das mittelstaendische Buergertum wurde aermer. Friedrich Duerrenmatt besuchte zunaechst das Berner Freie Gymnasium, dann das Humboldtianum, wo er 1941 die Maturitaetspruefung ablegte. Er war kein besonders guter Schueler und bezeichnete selbst seine Schulzeit als die “uebelste”(Knapp 4) seines Lebens. Die Schule wechselte er, weil ihm der Unterricht nicht gefiel, er schlechte Noten hatte und durch sein Verhalten bei den Lehrern aneckte. Noch in Konolfingen begann er zu malen und zu zeichnen, eine Neigung, die er sein Leben lang verspueren sollte. Er illustrierte spaeter manche seiner Stuecke, verfasste Skizzen, zum Teil ganze Buehnenbilder. 1976 und 1985 wurden seine Bilder in Neuchatel, 1978 auch in Zuerich ausgestellt. Trotzdem begann er im Jahr 1941 Philosophie, Naturwissenschaften und Germanistik zu studieren, zunaechst in Zuerich, aber schon nach einem Semester in Bern. Er hatte es mit dem Studium nicht besonders eilig und entschied sich wohl schon 1943, nicht die akademische, sondern die schriftstellerische Laufbahn einzuschlagen. Sein erstes veroeffentliches Stueck entstand 1945/46:
