Swiss playwright and essayist whose controversial plays are linked to the theatre of the absurd. Dürrenmatt achieved prominence after World War II in Switzerland and German. He saw that pure tragic is impossible in this grotesque time, but "we can achieve the tragic out of comedy." Influenced by Brechtian technique, Dürrenmatt used the alienation effect "The universal for me is chaos. The world (hence the stage which represents this world) is for me something monstrous, a riddle of misfortunes which must be accepted but before which one must not capitulate. The world is far bigger than any man, and perforce threatens him constantly. If one could but stand outside the world, it would no longer be threatening. But I have neither the right nor the ability to be an outsider to this world. To find solace in poetry can also be all too cheap; it is more honest to retain one's human point of view." (from Problems of the Theatre Es steht geschrieben Der Blinde (1948) failed at the box office but Romulus the Great (1949) was an international success. Its central character was the last Roman emperor who allows his empire to perish in order to save humanity.

Swiss dramatist. He wrote grotesque and ironical tragicomedies, for example (1956) and (1962). His fascination with the absurd and with black humour can also be seen in his novels, such as His work reveals a preoccupation with contemporary spiritual bankruptcy reminiscent of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard and the Czech writer Kafka. It combines artistic influences ranging from Bertolt Brecht's epic theatre to expressionist painting and Aristophanic comedy into an often paradoxical style. 1952, and 1953. The complete review 's Review The Physicists is one of many physicist-centered dramas written in the 1950s and 1960s. At that time the potential that scientific innovation held was largely seen in the awesome destructive power of the atomic and hydrogens bombs. Science seemed to have outstripped man's ability to utilize it for the betterment of humanity. The Cold War, the arms race, and policies of mutually assured destruction suggested that instead science was too easily being used for bad indeed, literally world-threatening ends. Man could not be trusted with the knowledge that physicists were able to discover. The Physicists begins with a murder. A patient has murdered a nurse at the sanatorium. Because he is believed to be insane the criminal investigation is a largely superficial one. But the inspector does note his annoyance: three months earlier another patient had murdered another nurse.

    Lebenslauf
