Swiss playwright. His plays, showing the influence of Bertolt Brecht as well as the Theatre of the Absurd , were central to the post-1945 revival of the German theatre. In his first three plays, All as It Is Written The Marriage of Mr. Mississippi (1952), and An Angel Comes to Babylon (1953), he took comic liberties with historical facts to present parables about modern life. His play The Visit (1956) and the modern morality play The Physicists (1962) earned him international acclaim. After 1970 he wrote adaptations, detective novels, radio plays, and essays. His works have been translated into more than 50 languages. document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Friedrich Durrenmatt" from the 32 Volume Durrenmatt, Friedrich - Swiss playwright, novelist, and essayist whose satiric, almost farcical tragicomic plays were central to the post-World War II revival of German theatre. The sweet science of marital satire
ROB KENDT , The Los Angeles Times
Friedrich Dürrenmatt's hilariously caustic reduction of the impassioned, often lyrical marital tragedy "Dance of Death" could more accurately be titled "Play Against Strindberg."
By excising peripheral characters, trimming or sharpening dialogue, and subverting key plot points for "Play Strindberg," Dürrenmatt's free adaptation mercilessly skewers the brooding Scandinavian temperament of early 20th century drama.
Dismissing Strindberg's "literary side" as "plush to the nth degree," Dürrenmatt, the author of such bleak mid-century classics as "The Visit" and "The Pledge," effectively torches the furniture and sandblasts the veneer from this bourgeois parlor; he even sets his version in a metaphorical boxing ring and divides it into 12 rounds.
It's gratifying to report, then, that director Hope Alexander's smart, sleek new production is a knockout.
Providing most of the show's formidable fighting weight is Joe Garcia as a vain, ridiculous army captain confined, as if in an elaborate punishment, to an island tower with his embittered wife, a former actress of dubious talents (Holly Jeanne).

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF FRIEDRICH DURRENMATT, CREATOR OF THE VISIT
By Peter Royston
"Everything is dragged along and everyone gets caught somewhere in the course of events. We are all collectively guilty...Comedy alone gets at our problems." Born January 5, 1921 in Konolfingen, Switzerland, Friedrich Durrenmatt bore an interesting and telling background: his father, Reinhold, was a Protestant minister, his grandfather Ulrich, was a behind-the-scenes man in Swiss politics and a well-known satirist. These different threads would meet in the young playwright and thinker. In 1941, he began serious study at universities in Zurich and Bern, burying himself in literature and philosophy. In his writing, he took justice as his tool, always taking it to its logical extreme. He thought that writers must look at life with a harsh, merciless clarity. He was always working and reworking his writing, even years after writing it. He called this "reeducating" his work. He said, "The stage is always the author's teacher, and he can learn from it." At 26 years old, his first play, As It Is Written, premiered to great controversy. The story of the play revolves around a grotesque battle between a sensation-craving cynic and a religious fanatic who takes Scripture literally, all while the city they live in is under siege. The idea behind the play is one he continued to use in his future work: taking an idea to its logical, usually awful, final extreme. By taking "the last shall be first and the first shall be last" literally and trying to create heaven on earth, the city dooms itself. In As It Is Written, we also see a theme he uses again in The Visit: the Church showing its weakness when confronted with a true moral question.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt The man who failed to invent the Theater of the Absurd (but was one of its strongest proponents) was born in Switzerland on January 5, 1921. Although destined to become a prominent playwright and essayist, he didn't make his mark until after World War II, and then primarily in Switzerland and Germany. Dürrenmatt believed that pure tragedy is impossible to achieve in an age and time when clear definitions of good and evil no longer exist. As an alternative, he suggested that "we can achieve the tragic out of comedy." So, through the use of the Brechtian technique, he set about crafting his plays so that both actors and audience maintained a distance to both the play's plot and characters. But Dürrenmatt strayed from Brecht, who believed in reason and change, by crafting his plays to show the pessimism that exists in modern society. "The universal for me is chaos. The world (hence the stage which represents this world) is for me something monstrous, a riddle of misfortunes which must be accepted but before which one must not capitulate. The world is far bigger than any man, and perforce threatens him constantly. If one could but stand outside the world, it would no longer be threatening. But I have neither the right nor the ability to be an outsider to this world. To find solace in poetry can also be all too cheap; it is more honest to retain one's human point of view." - from

  • Friedrich D¼rrenmatt 1921–1990
Swiss dramatist, novelist, short story writer, scriptwriter, essayist, and critic. The following entry provides an overview of D¼rrenmatt's career. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volumes 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, and 43.
    INTRODUCTION
Along with Bertolt Brecht, D¼rrenmatt is considered one of the most important German-language dramatists of the 20th century. His plays are largely tragicomedies for, according to D¼rrenmatt, true tragedy is impossible to write, but "we can achieve the tragic out of comedy." Paradoxes and irony are predominant in D¼rrenmatt's fiction where he uses clever reversals to illustrate the cruelty of the world.
    Biographical Information
D¼rrenmatt was born in Switzerland in 1921, and grew up in an intellectual family—his father was a minister and his grandfather had been a member of parliament. Many of the biblical and mythological allusions that appear in his work came from his parents' retelling of mythological and biblical tales. Later he studied theology, philosophy, literature, and science at the Universities of Bern and Zurich. He left school without completing a degree in order to pursue writing. In 1943 he wrote his first play, Kom¶die
