Critical Materials on Lawrence Durrell:
A Bibliographic Checklist
Last Updated: 23 January 2007
This is a constantly updated project to collect a bibliography on Lawrence Durrell in order to aid scholars in locating materials. The primary focus of this work is to make a checklist available of critical materials concerning Lawrence Durrell's works; however, a list of rarer works by Durrell, initial publication of his major work, review articles, and Durrell's own critical publications are included. While I hope this will aid research, these areas have not yet been covered in as much detail as critical materials. I have not retained the numbering from previous bibliographies and have avoided enumeration completely; this is a future project for updates and revisions.
UPDATES: Only the .pdf files for the full bibliography (alphabetical or chronological) are updated regularly . The pre-sorted lists in the column to the left have not been updated since September 2004. For researchers who need more frequent updates and better search options, a RIS formatted text file of the complete bibliography is also available (updated 23 January 2007). This will import into most bibliographic software, such as RefWorks, ProCite, EndNote, and so forth.
Annotations are currently at a minumum, but will develop in the future. Eventually, materials will be searchable via a database, but until then large divisions have been made between categories based on the focus of different critical works (See navigation bar to the right). This checklist has focused its energies on criticism, and researchers should still use the other major bibliographies, especially if they are looking for annotations, review articles, newspaper publications, and articles in a language other than English. These are, again, future projects to be undertaken more comprehensively once the current form of the bibliography is complete. I have also excluded materials for which I currently have only a partial reference and have not been able to examine a copy to obtain a full record. Such items will be added and updated as the records are acquired.

On this day in 1958, Lawrence Durrell's Mountolive was published, his third novel in the series commonly known as The Alexandria Quartet . INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt, in the years between the First and Second World Wars is hauntingly evoked in Justine , the first novel in Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet . In fact, it might be more accurate to describe Alexandria as a central character in Justine rather than as a setting. The emphasis on place pervades the novel's formal qualities. Durrell, like a number of his fellow modernists, does not rely on a conventional linear narrative within Justine or within the quartet but shifts continuously between past and present. One result is that the story seems to have substantial physical, but not temporal, boundaries. The novel achieves many of its effects with images, so that it often reads more like poetry than narrative. The foregrounding of place in the novel encourages us to consider the extent to which our actions, and even our natures, are determined by our surroundings. Insofar as these features of Justine represent the patterns of memory, the book is an exploration of how we understand and recall experience. Also central to the novel is Durrell's notion of love. Justine, whose title alludes to the Marquis de Sade's novel by the same name, attempts to redefine love, or to define it in modern terms. But in many ways, the relationships the narrator describes

  • Lawrence (George) Durrell 1912–
(Also wrote under the pseudonyms Charles Norden and Gaffer Peeslake) British novelist, poet, playwright, short story writer, travel writer, translator, editor, and critic. Durrell is one of the most acclaimed novelists of the twentieth century. Continuing in the tradition of James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence, he has experimented with the structure of the novel while also probing the human psyche. His work is infused with observations on the nature of reality and sexuality, based in part on the ideas of Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. Durrell's rich, sensual style of writing is highly praised, especially for his vivid description of landscape, which evokes the spirit of a place and reflects it in the characters. In his novel Justine , for example, the exotic qualities of Alexandria, Egypt, are seen in the title character.

Although Durrell was a heterosexual man who married many times, his art reflects an unusual degree of sexual liberation and incorporates characters of diverse sexualities. Who is Lawrence Durrell?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Lawrence Durrell is a British novelist, poet, journalist, and travel writer who was born in Jalandhar, India in 1912. Although British by nationality, Lawrence Durrell preferred to be thought of as cosmopolitan, as he loathed Britain and traveled all over the world during the course of his life, which ended at his home in France in 1990. Lawrence Durrell is probably best known for his Alexandria Quartet , about life in Egypt before the Second World War, although he has a very large and accomplished body of work. The parents of Lawrence Durrell were both Indian-born British, and they sent Durrell to England at the age of 11 to pursue his education, a practice very common in that era. Lawrence Durrell came to dislike Britain very much, as he had been sent far from the home and family he had always known, and he escaped as quickly as he could. Lawrence Durrell started writing poetry at the age of 15, publishing Quaint Fragment at the age of 19. He failed his University entrance exams at around the same time and decided not to pursue higher education.

Printer-friendly version Durrell's intoxicating reflections on Greece and the Mediterranean, collected here in one volume, edited by Clint Willis. With chapters on Corfu, Rhodes, Cyprus, Sicily, Delphi and Provence (where he lived for 33 years until his death in 1990) it's drawn from Durrell's four island books: Prospero's Cell, Reflections on a Marine Venus, Bitter Lemons and Sicilian Carousel. The book leads off with a 1960 essay, Landscape and Character. With a nicely detailed table of contents but oddly lacking illustrations, maps or an index.
