It has been posthumously suggested that Durrell never had British citizenship , though more accurately, he became defined as a non-patrial in 1968 due to the amendment to the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962 . Hence, he was denied the right to enter or settle in Britain under new laws and had to apply for a visa for each entry. His most famous work is the tetralogy The Alexandria Quartet

Welcome to Inventions of Spring , an unofficial guide to the life and work of Lawrence Durrell. Lawrence Durrell's life spanned the greater part of the twentieth century. Between his birth in India in 1912 and his death in France in 1990, he lived in countless countries and enjoyed literary friendships with Henry Miller, T.S. Eliot, Freya Stark and many other writers. While technically British (although in fact he never held a British passport), Durrell hated the country, referring to it as "Pudding Island" and spending as little time there as possible. (Read more about Durrell's life in his biography His best known work is The Alexandria Quartet , a work in four parts (as its name suggests) which explores themes of modern love through the use of different perspectives based on Einsteinian notions of time. He wrote numerous other works, including novels, poetry, plays and travel books. Of the latter, the most famous is Bitter Lemons , written about the time he spent living on Cyprus as a British press officer. Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, best known for THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET (1957-60). Many once believed it would secure Durrell the Nobel Prize for Literature. The experimental novel of mystery, love, and espionage explored memory and knowledge, contrasting in its story the love affair of a young writer with the recollections of the other people. Durrell spent most of his life outside England - in India, Corfu, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Rhodes, Cyprus, and the south of France. "Hellenic worlds are replaced here by something different, something subtly androgynous, inverted upon itself. The Orient cannot rejoice in the sweet anarchy of the body - for it has outstripped the body. I remember Nessim once saying - I think he was quoting - that Alexandria was the great winepress of love; those who emerged from it were the sick men, the solitaries, the prophets - I mean all who have been deeply wounded in their sex." (from Justine, part one of the

'The Reckoning' There are few authors who have left so distinctive a mark on the literature of the twentieth century as Lawrence Durrell. Like many readers, my first exposure to Durrell's work was through the Alexandria Quartet, a curious, twisting narrative of life, love and deception in war-time Alexandria. Since reading those four books, I have tried not only to learn more about this enigmatic author, but also searched for many of his more elusive works (some of which have been out of print in the United States since the early 1980s). Such interest could very likely result in a life-long pursuit, if one were to encompass the whole of Durrell's oeuvre, consisting as it does of large amounts of poetry, numerous novels, several plays, and many more articles, books of travel, correspondence and the like, many of which were published in limited editions.
Durrell was born on 27 February 1912, in Darjeeling, India, "at the foot of the Himalayas", as he would later claim, although this would proved to be more poetic license than geographic fact. He was sent to school in England at the age of twelve and, after attending preparatory schools and subsequently failing the entrance exam for Cambridge on multiple occasions, played in jazz clubs in London for a time. It was during this period that he met Nancy Myers, who was to be his first wife. He and she attempted several ventures in England before moving at the same time as Durrell's family to Corfu (as recounted rather amusingly, if somewhat inaccurately, in Gerald Durrell's autobiographical

I émancipés Stevens may have liked to think he approached art as the late Aga Khan might have approached a race horse, a pâté truffé, Just before the war Durrell wrote a novel, The Black Book The Black Book Justine is at least the equal of The Black Book, from the comic irony of its title to the tour de force of a tour de force that is its style. It is an imitation of what the French call a récit Justine râles and spoiling orchids. But they are frighteningly like the people you know.

Justine Balthazar Justine Justine Mandragola Volpone Balthazar does, as a matter of fact, get under way with a hilariously farcical tale about Scobie, the aged detective who turns out to be a transvestite. Presumably Durrell started this way with a purpose, to show that no man or woman is what he seems at first or even twentieth sight and even under the scrutiny of the most painstaking amateur psychologist and, as a corollary, that each new insight, from another person, means a complete bouleversement and, finally, that this is the very essence of the comic spirit.

In full Lawrence George Durrell. English novelist, writer of topographical books, verse plays, short stories and poet whose sensuous and exotic fiction made him a sort of prophet of the sexual revolution of the 1960's. Lawrence Durrell wrote both poetry and prose, with a notable sense of place and a concentration on the complexity of human relationships. Durrell is best known as the author of The Alexandria Quartet , a series of four interconnected novels. Many once believed it would secure Durrell the Nobel Prize for Literature Lawrence George Durrell was born on February 27, 1912, in Jullundur in northern India, near Tibet. His English father, Lawrence Samuel Durrell, an engineer, had gone to the subcontinent to work on the construction of the country's first railway. His Irish-English mother, Louisa Florence Dixie, had also been born in India. This mix of nationalities marked Durrell's creative imagination. Durrell spent most of his life outside England and had little sympathy with the English character. He was educated in India until he reached age 11 and then at St. Edmund's School, Canterbury, in England. The immediate discomfort he felt in England he attributed to its lifestyle, which he termed "the English death." He explains: "English life is really like an autopsy. It is so, so dreary." Deeply alienated, he refused to adjust himself to England and resisted the regimentation of school life.
